Sony’s PSP-3000 now available across North America

October 14th, 2008 by

Given that a PSP-3000 Ratchet & Clank Entertainment Pack managed to sneak out a few days back (and, you know, being that today’s the official launch day and all), you shouldn’t be too floored to hear that the altogether brighter PlayStation Portable is now available across North America. ‘Course, you’ll have to fork over $199.99 for the aforementioned bundle if you want it today — the less-frills black PSP-3000 kit (with just a 4GB Memory Stick) should be around next month.

Sony PSP 5.00 and PS3 2.50 firmware updates available soon-ish

October 14th, 2008 by

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) has put the word out on those PS3 and PSP updates we hepped you to yesterday. The big news is that the PS3 browser now supports Flash 9. Otherwise, things are pretty much as we thought: support for your SOCOM Bluetooth Headset’s High Quality mode, advanced voice chat features, screen capture (for future titles), a video scene search, power save mode and changes to the Trophy system and Information Board. The PSP 5.00 firmware gives the handheld WiFi access to the PlayStation store, a full size on-screen keyboard and a sleep timer (just like your old clock radio). According to SCEE, the updates should see the light of day on October 15 (at least in Europe) but there’s no word yet on a Stateside release. You’ll know as soon as we do.

Video: PSP surfs over to PlayStation Store via firmware 5.0

October 14th, 2008 by

Good news, PSP fans — the PlayStation Store is closer than ever to hitting your handheld, and we’ve got the video to prove it. Sony has hosted up a clip to give us all a better idea of what firmware 5.0 has in store for the PSP, and while there aren’t any real surprises, it’s always good to get a sneak peek. We’re told that users will soon be able to create an account and access the PlayStation Network right on the PlayStation Portable, and the PS Store access is the same as on the PS3. Enough chatter — give the video a look in the read link.

PS3 2.50 and PSP 5.00 firmware coming soon, PSP WiFi store included

October 13th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Sony’s firmware elves haven’t gotten a break since the last round of console updates — PS3 2.50 and PSP 5.00 have just been announced on the PlayStation Blog. Nothing terrifically major for the PS3 apart from support for the SOCOM Bluetooth Headset’s High Quality mode, as well as some trophy tweaks and power management options, but the PSP gets a WiFi version of the PlayStation Store, with downloadable games, trailers, and demos. No word on when these will actually become available, but we’d guess it’ll be relatively soon.

PSP-3000 sneaks out a bit early, suffers an unboxing

October 11th, 2008 by

Due to be launched next Tuesday, the PSP-3000 Ratchet & Clank Entertainment Pack has managed to slip into at least one Best Buy a few days early, where it was quickly snatched up by friendly tipster Aaron G. He sent us a few unboxing shots out of the kindness of his heart, and now he’s undoubtedly too engrossed in National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets and that ultra-bright screen to pay us much heed. Oh Nicolas Cage, what a charmer you are.

PSP Plus awkwardly unites PSP, DualShock 3

October 9th, 2008 by

With only one analog nub, the PSP can’t seem to nail down a comfortable first or third-person shooter control scheme on its own, but a new tech called “PSP Plus” will allow users to pair the handheld with the PlayStation 3’s more genre-capable SIXAXIS or DualShock 3 controllers. Sony announced PSP Plus at the Tokyo Game Show today but didn’t provide much info about how it works, so we’re not sure if it’s the same technology that was patented last year. We do know there’s a pretty outrageous catch: you’ll need to connect your PSP to your PS3 to use the controller. With only one game supported (Resistance Retribution), we prefer just about any homemade hack to this solution, and if you’re at home with your PS3, why not play Resistance 2 instead? It’s what Kratos would do.

Judge declares mistrial in RIAA filesharing case, sets aside $222,000 verdict

September 25th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We always thought that the RIAA’s first-ever filesharing trial victory against Jammie Thomas was a little suspect since the labels weren’t required to prove that Thomas even had Kazaa installed on her machine or was the person using the account in question, and it looks like the court agrees — it’s just declared a mistrial and set aside the $222,000 judgment on the grounds that simply making copyrighted works available for download does not constitute copyright infringement. That’s a huge decision — the “making available” theory is the basis for most of the RIAA’s legal arguments — and it means that the RIAA will now have to prove the unauthorized transfer of each song it wants to collect damages on at the new trial. We’ll see what effect this has in the broader sense — we’ve got a feeling we’re in for a slew of appellate decisions on both sides of the “making available” debate — but for now it looks like the good guys are finally starting to score some points.

PSP and 360 Chatpad are a match hacked in heaven

September 7th, 2008 by

Some dedicated hackers have finally managed to get the PSP and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Chatpad typing. There are still a few kinks to smooth out, but the hard part seems over, with l0rdnic0 managing a tiny bit of soldiering using a PSP remote cable and some software from the Open Keyboard Project. It’s all still pretty nerdy at the moment, and we’re still miffed at that Logic 3 getting cancelled way back when, but we suppose this will have to do.

Sony exec takes it back, says PSP-3000 battery life “equivalent to current PSP”

September 3rd, 2008 by

We’re not sure which part of “you can buy a new, larger battery from Sony to extend your gaming time” John Koller didn’t mean, but evidently we (read: the world) had it all wrong. In a recent posting from the Director, he “clarifies” things by asserting that “the new PSP will have equivalent battery life to the current PSP, about 4 to 6 hours for games and about 4 to 5 hours for UMD videos.” He continues on to affirm that the new, brighter and altogether lovelier display does suck down more power, but Sony’s dutiful engineers apparently managed to “reduce the power consumption of the overall system” in order to counteract that. At this point, we’ll just wait for real world battery tests before believing anything.

PSP-3000 battery life diminished by new screen, Sony suggests buying a bigger battery

September 2nd, 2008 by

Filed under:

According to a GameSpot interview with Sony’s US director of hardware marketing John Koller, that new PSP-3000 screen may look a bit better… but it’s going to cost you about 20 minutes of battery life. Luckily for you gamers with endless pockets out there, Koller assures that minor wrinkle be offset because, “We’re going to have the extended life battery that’s still available for consumers, so we’re still going to get the eight-to-ten hours out of that battery.” So just to make that clear, the regular battery life will be diminished, but you can buy a new, larger battery from Sony to extend your gaming time. Got that? Good. Watch him say it for real in the video after the break.

PSP-3000 screen head-to-head with the PSP-2000: oh, that’s what improved means

PSP-3000’s new, better LCD is new, better

Don’t want to blow any minds here, but Sony’s new and improved PSP-3000 LCD happens to actually be new and improved. According to our bestest pals over at Engadget Japan, the new screen has double the color gamut, about five times the contrast ratio and double the response time. PSP-3000… will you marry us?

Sony gets official with PSP-3000

August 20th, 2008 by

It’s not like Sony could really keep this thing under wraps for much longer, but the company finally did the deed by announcing the PSP-3000 at the Leipzig Games Convention. The unit itself will look exactly like the PSP-2000, though it will feature an “improved screen that’s better outside with no glare and a built-in mic.” The juicy tidbits have yet to surface, but we are told to expect the new handheld in Europe for €199 ($291) on October 15th.

Unspectacular PSP-3001 outed by the FCC

August 13th, 2008 by

We expect a lot when Sony makes a full point update from the PSP-2001. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case as we thumb through the FCC filing of Sony’s newest PSP. Then again, it’s being pretty tight-lipped with most of the juicy docs well hidden in support of Sony’s request for confidentiality. We can tell you that the FCC’s tests were all focused on the 2.4GHz spectrum for the PSP-3001’s stated use of 802.11b WiFi (nothing new there) — no GPS, no 802.11 Draft-n, no Bluetooth. In fact, the schematic used to demonstrate the FCC ID placement looks identical to the existing PSP slim — no evidence of that rumored mic or redesigned Home button. Guess we’ll have to wait for this one to walk through the system a bit. Nevertheless, fanboys rejoice, PSP-3001 is real and this close to a formal announcement. See the label placement pic after the break.

Sony busts out metallic-blue Madden NFL 09 PSP Entertainment Pack

PSP Madden Value Pack

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/playstation/Sony_busts_Out_Metallic_Blue_Madden_09_PSP_Entertainment_Pak’; If dreams of a possibly redesigned PSP don’t have you waiting, you’re a sucker for the Madden football, and the color blue gets you going, Sony has the package for you. The Madden NFL 09 PSP Entertainment Pack includes a metallic-blue PSP, Madden NFL 09, 1GB Memory Stick Duo, In Just One Play movie on UMD (apparently they’re still pressing movies on UMD), and a voucher for a free download of Beats from the PSN. It runs $199 like other PSP packs, and is available…now. Question is: who’s the Jets’ starting quarterback?

Man inexplicably brings touchscreen to the PSP

August 9th, 2008 by

A certain jube808 has launched a quixotic quest to add a myriad of features to the PSP that he believes should’ve been there from the start, including beefed up battery life, a better control pad, and touchscreen support. Think what you will of his aims, he certainly seems to have some hardware chops, as he’s got a touchscreen up and running on the handheld. So far he’s just got a proof of concept keyboard, which works with a finger or a stylus, but the hope is to provide full touchscreen support for homebrew gaming. Let us know how that goes, jube. Videos are after the break.

[Thanks, Craig]

Sony says goodnight to PSP Extended Life Battery Kit

August 8th, 2008 by

Sony, where’s the justice? How could you mercilessly kill the nine month old PSP Extended Life Battery Kit — capable of boosting the PSP’s play time by up to 80% — while UMDs continue to be the preferred method of distribution for the system’s games and video content (thereby also heavily contributing to the device’s juice-drain)? Worse still for Sony, why are we not surprised?

PSP phone mod is really exactly what we were waiting for

August 8th, 2008 by

Call it off Sony, no need to throw any precious man hours into making your perennially #2 handheld into some sort of amazing featurephone hybrid, some hacker has already done it for you. Through the amazing wonders of modern thinphone technology, soldering irons and probably a bit of glue, some hacker has managed the slap a Haier touchscreen phone onto the back of his PSP — killing the UMD drive in the process, but we’d say it was well worth it.

Sony bigwig hints at GPS-enabled PSP games

July 22nd, 2008 by

Only John Koller knows how serious John Koller, Sony’s senior marketing manager for PSP, was when mentioning that GPS-enabled games could eventually hit the PSP, but he definitely threw it out there. Speaking about the forthcoming GPS add-on for the PlayStation Portable, Koller stated that said module “changes the dynamics of GPS but also changes the way developers think about games on PSP, because you can start integrating GPS into it.” He continued on by mentioning that Sony’s own first-party studios were “already looking at a number of things [involving GPS in games],” and concluded by asserting that a GPS game could land on the system as early as next year. Considering just how long we’ve been waiting for the add-on, we’re not holding our breath on the titles.

Sony said to be prepping PSP-3000 with built-in mic

July 22nd, 2008 by

Filed under:

There may not have been any word of a new PSP out of E3 as some had suspected, but it looks Sony may have a bit of a late surprise for us, at least if these tantalizing pics from PSPChina are to be believed. Apparently, this new PSP-3000 model remains mostly unchanged from the current PSP-2000, with the notable addition of a built-in microphone and a somewhat less notable PlayStation button in place of the usual Home button. As you can see in the picture after the break, the signature steel ring on the back of the PSP also appears to have been trimmed a bit (there’s a pic of the inside of the case as well, for the curious). Not exactly the DS Lite sort of upgrade that’d make everyone ditch their old PSPs to be sure but, as we’ve seen with the PSP-2000, it would be about par for the course for Sony.
