Motorola’s Android slider getting social in Q2 2009?

October 20th, 2008 by

Motorola: a name that oozes with apathy amongst gadget aficionados these days. But what if we added the words “Android” and “Social” to the mix, would you once again take notice of the world’s most invisible number 1 seller of handsets? According to BusinessWeek, Moto’s Google-ified handset will feature an “iphone-like touch-screen, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and a host of social-network-friendly features.” BusinessWeek’s sources say that the device takes its design cues from the Krave ZN4 while resembling a high-end version of the T-Mobile G1 from HTC (while selling for less). Apparently Moto has been shopping the spec-sheet and images around to carriers over the last few months in preparation for a Q2 2009 US launch (Europe in Q3 2009) for the MySpaceBook crowd. Unfortunately for Moto, we expect the market to be flooded with Android handsets by then.

RIM adding touchscreen to Bold-like QWERTY, US bound HSDPA Storm in May?

October 17th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Boy Genius is fleshing-out those next-gen BlackBerry rumors this morning. According to the very early buzz from his sources, BGR says that we should be looking at a new Storm capable of riding US HSDPA frequencies after its expected unveiling at the WES2009 show which starts May 5th. RIM’s also rumored to be working on a Bold-like QWERTY of Javeline / Curve 8900-size with an honest-to-goodness touchscreen baked right in. Mmm, baked BlackBerries.

AT&T goes wild with texting, announces four QWERTY phones

October 14th, 2008 by

Filed under:

If you’re into that whole SMS craze and you’re on AT&T, you’re in luck — four times over. The carrier’s gone ahead and announced not one, not two, but four QWERTY-equipped dumphones today, including a dual slider and a Pantech being billed as “the world’s thinnest device with a full QWERTY keypad.”

First up, the Pantech Matrix is available now in your choice of blue or green, with red being added on Thursday, October 16. It slides two ways — a conventional vertical slide to reveal a numeric keypad, and a second side slider for the full QWERTY action. It’s got 3G, AT&T Navigation, Video Share support, and a 1.3-megapixel cam, running $79.99 on contract with rebate. Next, the Samsung Propel apes the i620’s industrial design — but make no mistake, there’s no Windows Mobile to be found here. It also does 3G and features the full host of AT&T services, packs a 1.3-megapixel cam, and will run the same $79.99 as the Matrix when it hits in late October in blue, green, red, and white with red accents. Next, the Pantech Slate is pretty appropriately named — if its claim of being the thinnest QWERTY device in the world ends up holding water, anyway. It’ll be available in late October alongside the Propel for $49.99 on contract with a 1.3-megapixel camera, but there’s no high-speed data to be found in this sucker. Finally, the long-rumored Quickfire — you may know it better as the Knick — will come in November bearing AT&T branding and a Sidekick-esque style that’ll likely appeal to the young’uns among us. It’s got a touchscreen in addition to a slide-out QWERTY deal, a 1.3-megapixel camera (notice a trend here?), and 3G in your choice of orange, lime, and silver for $99.99 after you’ve inked up the dotted line.

LG announces Prada II

October 13th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We think that phones like the Touch Pro and X1 sort of limit the market for pricey dumbphone QWERTY sliders, but be that as it may, LG clearly has every intention of making the Prada II one of its headline devices in the waning months of 2008. The rumored 7.2Mbps HSDPA 850 / 2100, WiFi, TV-out, an FM radio, and a 5-megapixel camera have all been confirmed to go along with the full keyboard for a launch in Europe in the end of October or beginning of November, running something in the range of €600 (about $816). Don’t get us wrong, it looks alright — but would this be your first choice of ways to part with the better part of a grand?

Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X1 gets handled, photographed

June 16th, 2008 by

Filed under:

The lucky chaps over at Boy Genius Report have managed to get their hands all over Sony Ericsson’s latest and greatest — the hotly anticipated Xperia X1. Early word is that the 800 x 480 screen, optical joystick, and speedy HSDPA data are all very welcome, but the keyboard (which looks like it would be a joy to type on) leaves a lot to be desired. Of course, the OS should come as no surprise, and they don’t seem to have any shots of Sony’s “panel interface,” so for now you’ll have to make do with some nice looks at the exteriors of the device. Hit the read link and check it out yourself.

Vtech’s IS6110 cordless phone touts QWERTY keypad, IM capability

April 14th, 2008 by

Filed under:

No need to bust out one of those newfangled smartphones to get your handset-based chat on — oh no, baby boomers and their offspring can now handle IM conversations via a landline telephone. You heard right, Vtech is getting all extraordinary on us today with the industry’s first instant messaging cordless phone, and sure enough, the DECT 6.0 IS6110 features a full-fledged QWERTY keypad to keep those thumbs happy. All that’s required is that the phone’s base station be connected via USB to a PC, after which users can have free access to MSN Messenger, Windows Live Messenger and AOL Instant Messenger. What better way to gently introduce your mother (hint, hint) to this millennium than by dropping $99.95 on this?

Hands-on with ASUS touchscreen M536 QWERTY

March 3rd, 2008 by

Here you go QWERTY fans, ASUS’ M536. This touch-screen follow-up to the M530W runs Windows Mobile 6.1 under that 2.43-inch, 320 x 320 display. Inside you’ll find 802.11b/g WiFi, 256MB of flash, and GPS. While it sports 3.6Mbps HSDPA on the 2100/1900/850 bands, it’s unfortunately limited to GSM/EDGE/GPRS riding the 900/1800/1900 frequencies. As such, we’ll bet this one is heading straight to Europe, Statesiders. Our hands-on was brief due to that fingerprint scanner. Still, we’d bet that this business minded handset will come sporting ASUS’ own sultry WinMo overlay whenever it does launch.

RIM patents a QWERTY slider, HTC lawyers perk up their ears

February 29th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Nice going RIM, you’ve successfully filed for a patent on a device that companies like HTC have been making since 2005. That’s right folks, your friends at Research In Motion have just thrown an application in the direction of the US Patent Office which should look painfully familiar. The company is calling it a “Hybrid Portrait-Landscape Handheld Device With Trackball Navigation and QWERTY Hide-Away Keyboard,” but we’re calling it the Wizard. We suppose it’s possible that the BlackBerry-maker has something up its sleeve that goes beyond the typical functionality of a phone like this, but nothing in the application seemed to indicate such a scenario. Did RIM even check out the competition before issuing this paperwork? It seems unlikely given the obvious and commonly used shape and design of this particular handset… oh, wait, this one has a trackball. Okay, our bad.

LG’s KT610 S60 smartphone with GPS: sounds good, looks like something

February 10th, 2008 by

While Sony Ericsson has the tongues wagging over at the Mobile World Congress, LG has quietly loosed its LG-KT610 without any photos. We know it’s a 2.4-inch VGA flip with QWERTY based on Symbian v9.2 and S60 3rd edition feature pack 1. That’s a damn good start before adding 3.6Mbps HSDPA and GPS navigation. As to the looks it’s said to be “sleek” and “uniquely designed.” Thanks LG, but that isn’t quit enough information to form a mental picture now is it? We’ll slap in some pics as soon as they roll in.

November 16th, 2007 by

Filed under:

Why hello hello Mr. M800, thanks for officially joining the QWERTY party. Hot on the heels of their X800 launch comes the keyboard totin’ M800 sharing most of the same goodies included that 2.8-inch, 480 x 640 (VGA!) touchscreen. Hands-on with Sprint’s LG Rumor handset

October 24th, 2007 by

Filed under:

Sprint’s low-cost QWERTY-enabled slider was on display for all to see this eve and we dodged crowds and brutal lighting conditions to bring you some pics. As a refresher, the LG Rumor is a Sprint foray into feature packed-ish handset for little or no money down, in this case $79 doesn’t get you EV-DO, but does get QWERTY, Bluetooth, Sprint Navigation, and a 1.3 megapixel shooter thrown in for good measure. Sure, we agree that it lacking EV-DO may be a deal breaker for some, we’re pretty confident that this is likely gonna be a winner for those just looking for a useful small handset. Virgin Mobile deals the Kyocera Wild Card

October 19th, 2007 by

Filed under:

Virgin Mobile is officially dipping its toes into smartphone water with its latest offering, the Kyocera Wild Card. Of course, how deep into that particular pool both companies are going is a question for the ages. The Wild Card isn’t exactly the most robust phone you’ll ever get your hands on, though the flip-phone does offer a QWERTY keypad, dual screens, a 1.3-megapixel camera, Bluetooth integration, and a WAP browser. The hitch is that you’ll have to view that browser on a 128 x 160 screen, which is painfully, embarrassingly small — though they do throw in Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man to keep you distracted. Hey, for a price point of $99, you could do way, way worse. The phone is available now from your friendly neighborhood Virgin Mobile dealer.

Samsung’s BlackJack II outed as the i617

October 9th, 2007 by

Filed under:

Don’t worry BlackJack fans, Samsung does indeed seem to have a true BlackJack II successor in the works for you, unlike that stylus-based i780 pretender to the throne. Turns out the i617 — which we saw pass the FCC yesterday — will be doing the honors, but unfortunately it’s not terribly clear what those honors will be. AT&T is a lock, thanks to the HSDPA 850 / 1900, and of course Windows Mobile 6 will be the main attraction, but there’s no confirmation of WiFi or any other notable hardware upgrades just yet other than a bump to 2 megapixels from the original’s 1.3. As for looks, we’ll let you make up your own mind, but the design isn’t much of a departure — there’s still a back hump — but everything is considerably more shiny this time around. No word on price or availability. There’s a shot of the back after the break.

HTC’s S730 Vox-followup spotted in the wild?

October 1st, 2007 by

Filed under:

If these spy shots of the purported S730 are to be believed, then HTC looks to be drumming up a successor to their S710 Vox. Besides sporting an improved 400MHz Qualcomm processor and 3G radio, we’re told that it features a like, totally, “way better keyboard,” Bluetooth, and the “excellent build quality” we expect from an HTC device. We can also see a new front-facing camera and WiFi option in that picture above. With any luck, HTC will make it official at one of their rumored announcements coming today and tomorrow. Until then, hit the read link for plenty more pics.
