IMMI tracks ad exposure / effectiveness via cellphone, trips privacy alarms everywhere

October 15th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Hunker down and find that tin foil cap, pronto! Privacy advocates, we’ve a new target for you to bang on: Integrated Media Measurement. The 4,900-person media research company is looking to take advertising measurement to a whole new level (or new low, as it were) by embedding tracking modules within cellphones. In short, the module picks up audio from ads and records information about the exposure; in the future, if you were to purchase whatever product you heard about (like seeing a movie that was plugged), it would register a hit and deem you a sucker. As of now, the only testers with these freaky phones are individuals who signed up for this stuff, but you better believe major marketing firms (and TV / movie studios in particular) are perking their ears up and begging to know more.

Video: XM Radio’s XMp3 interface shown off

October 13th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We knew XM Radio’s XMp3 handheld was on sale and shipping, but if you’ve been holding back and patiently waiting for some live video action of the UI before biting, have a gander at this. One xzitony managed to acquire the new Pioneer-built device and take it for a spin, but rather than just keeping it all to himself, he decided to host up a six minute clip walking us through the user interface. There are just no words to express our gratitude, but you can leave your thanks on his YouTube page after peeping the vid just past the break.

[Thanks, Anthony]

Cambridge Audio reveals iPod-lovin’ Sonata / Fusion audio systems

September 20th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Not content with sneaking a dedicated Blu-ray player into CEDIA, Cambridge Audio has just taken the plastic off of two new HiFi systems in Milan. The Sonata, aimed squarely at audio junkies, consists of a 2.1-channel DAB receiver (£299; $547), which offers 40-watts of amplification per channel and your choice of an upscaling 1080p DVD player or a Wolfson-DAC-loaded CD unit for another £179 ($327). The all-in-one Fusion (£300; $549) includes 30-watts per channel, an integrated CD player, DAB / FM tuner, USB port, an SD slot and a customized iPod dock (which is also bundled with the aforementioned Sonata). Both units are slated to hit the UK in silver and black, though the November-bound Fusion will get a jump on the Sonata, which hits in February 2009.

RCA trots out RIR205 tabletop internet radio

September 18th, 2008 by

Among the other low-rate gear unveiled this evening by Audiovox comes the RCA RIR205, a tabletop internet radio that may have gotten away with that design in 1992. Instead, we have no option but to recommend this one only for rarely used spare bedrooms, though the built-in AM / FM tuner, WiFi radio streaming (complete with a Slacker song tagging feature) and the integrated support for WeatherBug forecasts are quite nice. Additionally, users can record up to 10 hours of music and other radio programming onto the unit’s 512MB of inbuilt memory, and of course, you can set the alarm to wake you with online music or your favorite local sports talk host. Not too shabby for $149.99, but that exterior could use some work.

Pioneer-built XMp3 gets specced, shows up for sale

September 15th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Ah, ha! So that XMp3 XM Radio player we spotted the other day in Popular Science was more than just a trick played by our eyes. PopSci has come forth with a few more details on the unit, but still doesn’t do it nearly as good as Best Buy’s product page. From the latter, we learn that the Pioneer-built unit plays back MP3 / WMA files stored on your microSD card, records up to 100 hours of XM Radio or digital audio, and comes bundled with a home dock, power adapter, home antenna, remote and assorted cables for $279.99. We’re also hearing that the device alone will go for around two bills when it arrives in under a fortnight, but we wouldn’t bet the farm on that just yet.

Filed under:

Shortly after Sony pumped out a funky fresh new boombox of its own, along comes Sharp with a stable of its own. The outfit has just unveiled the CD-DK890N and CD-DK891N sound systems, both of which feature iPod compatibility (via an integrated dock), 250-watts of amplification, AM / FM tuners, a five-disc CD changer and X Bass for a little extra bottom end. Intempo unveils iPod-lovin’ RDi-W / Fusion speaker systems

August 20th, 2008 by

Filed under:

What can we say? Intempo has launched a new pair of iPod-compatible speaker systems, and unless you’re somehow just entering the market for one in the latter half of 2008, chances are you’re already yawning. Nevertheless, the RDi-W (pictured) does distinguish itself somewhat by including support for DAB and wireless internet radio, and there’s a 30-watt internal amplifier to kick out the jams. The much drabber Fusion keeps things small and simple by offering up just 25-watts of power and DAB / FM tuners. Expect the couple to sashay into e-tailers next month for £169.99 ($316) / £99 ($184).

Slacker G2 WiFi radio gets more personal thanks to the FCC

August 14th, 2008 by

A lovely picture like this can mean only one thing — the fine feds over at the FCC are leaking another unannounced product. You’re looking at the new Slacker G2 WiFi radio which appears to have slimmed down from the original Slacker Portable while moving the skip and play/pause buttons to the front of a the device. A peek at the guts reveals a Broadcom BCM4325GKFBG chip which means 802.11a/b/g, Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR, and FM receiver. We also spotted 4GB of flash storage and a 730mAH battery for what it’s worth. Check the User Quickstart Guide and a few more pics in the gallery below.

iHome ships rotatable iH41 iPod alarm clock

August 11th, 2008 by

We’ve heard about iHome’s twistable iH41 since CES, but it looks like the outfit finally got its act together and began to ship these out. Designed specifically for the iPod touch and its variable aspect screen, this unit can be flipped for easy orientation switching that enables users to view widescreen videos while it’s docked and charging; when rotated, the digital clock display will also adjust to “complement the position of the unit.” Notably, there’s no mention of iPhone / iPhone 3G compatibility, but you do get a handy remote thrown in should you decide to cough up $79.99.

iLuv kicks out i168 and i169 HD Radio alarm clocks

April 30th, 2008 by

Something’s really wrong with the world if more than a few months pass by without a new iPod alarm clock from iLuv, so we suppose everyone’s a-okay for a few more months now. Announced today, the firm has introduced its first pair of HD Radio clocks, and sure enough, one of ‘em plays nice with Cupertino’s darling. The i169 would be that player, which offers up a mostly black motif, dual stereo speakers, remote, iPod dock, AM / FM / HD Radio reception, an auxiliary input and dual alarm settings for good measure. As for the currently available i168, it provides most everything you read up there sans the iPod compatibility, but then again, it only demands $89.99. What about the i169, you ask? It’ll set you back a cool $169.99 when it lands in “early May.” Full release waiting after the break.

Tangent intros Quattro Mk 2 tabletop internet radio

March 9th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Keeping with the Tangent tradition, the Quattro Mk 2 looks an awful lot like most every other tabletop radio the outfit cranks out. Nevertheless, this particular iteration pays no mind to DAB and focuses its attention on providing access to a smorgasbord of internet radio stations. Aside from featuring both integrated WiFi and an Ethernet port, you’ll also get WPA2 security support, FM tuning capabilities, a backlit LCD, a headphone jack and a auxiliary port for connecting DAPs / PMPs. Word on the street has the walnut and black models selling now for £179.95 ($362), while the glossy red and white versions demand an extra £20 ($40).

Analyst says XM and Sirius merger looks “less likely”

March 6th, 2008 by

According to Pacific Crest Washington analyst Erik Olbeter (yeah, you know, Erik Olbeter), the seemingly ill-fated, extremely drawn out XM and Sirius merger now seems, “Less likely.” It shouldn’t come as any surprise if you’ve been following this story, which is now entering its 13th month of heel-dragging and unfulfilled promises. With last week’s announcement that the deadline would be extended an additional two months, Olbeter feels that, “Prospects for the merger have become increasingly cloudy.” He goes on to suggest that, “The FCC and Department of Justice are having a hard time justifying the deal,” though he believes that both are, “inclined to approve the merger.” Still, not a terrific outlook by any means, and certainly a contributor to the increasing feeling that this thing might never really happen.

Tangent’s Cinque radio does DAB and more on your tabletop

February 1st, 2008 by

Looking for something with a hint of style to take up that empty expanse that is your bedside table? Peer no further than Tangent’s Cinque, which offers up DAB, FM and AM radio tuning within a compact (and fairly attractive) package. Besides pulling tunes from thin air, this unit also plays nice with CDs and any ole DAP you’ve got stuffed in your underused gadgets drawer courtesy of the built-in 3.5-millimeter auxiliary jack. Furthermore, you can set the alarm to wake you with music, and just in case you’re not really feeling the hue shown above, it’s also available in walnut, black and red for £239.99 ($478).

USB Aroma Radio almost smells as bad as the regular kind

January 29th, 2008 by

Filed under:

If you’re like us, you’re sure to have fond memories of gathering around the radio in your jammies on Saturday morning and listening to the likes of Adventures in Odyssey and Life with Luigi; an experience that was only marred by the smell of your Dad’s rotting stereo speakers. Maybe that was just us? Well, perhaps you can learn to commiserate with this USB Aroma Radio + Speaker from Brando. It sounds a lot like that Aroma Geur radio we saw a while back, only it’s about $400 cheaper and probably much less likely to synchronize its aromas and LEDs to the music. You can also use the unit as a line-in speaker if you’ve had enough of radio — and who hasn’t.

Roberts reveals RD41 DAB radio: high on features, low on style

January 29th, 2008 by

Nah, Roberts’ RD41 isn’t quite as minuscule as its RD49, but unfortunately, it’s essentially just as ugly. Taking a few notes from tableside radios circa 1990 (and sadly, today as well), Roberts has crafted a fairly well-spec’d DAB iteration that also does FM on the side, can record to an SD card and touts a dozen alarms that can wake even the most notorious slumberer. You’ll also find MP3 / WMA playback from the SD card, rewind and pause functions, scrolling text about the station you’re tuned into and audio in / out sockets to boot. Word on the street pegs this one at £139.99 ($277), but we’d recommend hiding it somewhere good before company shows up.

Cue Radio plays nice with your iPod

January 5th, 2008 by

Another day CES, another clock radio that revolves around Apple’s darling. This go ’round, we’ve got Cue Acoustics getting into the exceedingly oversaturated market with its simply-titled Cue Radio. As you can probably glean from its name, this “high-end” device packs an AM / FM radio, an integrated speaker, LCD display, a simplistic, presumably Cupertino-approved design and an obligatory iPod dock on the top. Sadly, we’ve no details regarding price / availability, but it’s not like you don’t already have eight perfectly suitable alternatives scattered about your domicile.

Intel develops integrated WiFi / WiMAX / DVB-H chip

December 13th, 2007 by

Filed under:

Intel, clearly not wanting to be left in the dust by the slew of new wireless technologies that are starting to converge, nasty-like, inside our shiny new devices, has begun testing on a chip which can effortlessly swap between WiFi, WiMAX, and DVB-H. The idea is that the chip’s radio would talk to your WiFi at home, hand over the data to WiMAX if you hit the road, and also allow you to pull down digital television while staying mobile — without having to use an array of separate radios or silicon. This should open up a whole new vista of possibilities for time-wasting activities, so whenever manufacturers want to get this into our phones / laptops, just say the word. We’re ready.
