LaCie intros 5big Network drive array to RAID junkies the world over

October 12th, 2008 by

Filed under:

The LaCie product roof has been raised to 7.5TB with the new 5big Network — an Active Directory and gigabit Ethernet-friendly array of storage drives that supports several RAID configurations for up to five hot-swappable hard drives. You can try it on in four different sizes — 2.5TB for $899.99, 5TB for $1,399, or the aforementioned, bar-raising 7.5TB for $1,899. In keeping with his sixteen year relationship with LaCie, the renowned Neil Poulton applied his HAL 9000-inspired design to the product, winning him another Janus de L’industrie award. The only problem with the HAL motif: you really, really don’t want your RAID storage device to drone on about how its “mind is going, Dave.”

August 7th, 2008 by

We’ve seen a couple tiny / portable RAID enclosures, but Addonics’s new Portable Dual Drive enclosure is the smallest we’ve seen so far, with a compact stacked design that allows you to easily swap drives. The eSATA / USB 2.0 box supports RAID 0/1 and several other disk configs, and Addonics is hyping compatibility with SATA-to-CF adapters that’ll let you build a crazy SSD RAID. Out now for $99.

Samsung trumpets mass production of Spinpoint MP2 / M6 / F1 HDDs

June 18th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Thanks to an overzealous e-tailer, we already knew that Sammy’s Spinpoint M6 was ready to be ordered en masse, but Samsung has finally put out some official verbiage to substantiate the obvious. The outfit’s 500GB Spinpoint M6 ($299) and 250GB Spinpoint MP2 ($199) are both shipping as we speak, and that curious sound you hear over there is your current laptop begging for a storage upgrade. On a slightly related note, the company is also announcing that its 7200RPM Spinpoint F1 RAID-class (F1R; pictured) 3.5-inch SATA drive has hit mass production, meaning that you can bulk up your enterprise storage solution 1TB at a time for $299 each.

WD’s My Book Mirror Edition simplifies redundant storage

June 18th, 2008 by

Filed under:

That sound you hear is Western Digital grabbing hold of an udder and not letting go as it continues to milk the My Book brand for every penny it’s worth. Today, the outfit is introducing a new line of dual-drive units that come ready to mirror whatever information you shove on ‘em. The RAID-based Mirror Edition drives tout USB 2.0 connectivity, RAID 1/0 support, a fanless design, user serviceable enclosure, a capacity gauge and intelligent drive management features including automatic power-up and Safe Shutdown. The external HDDs arrive in RAID 1 (mirrored) mode — which creates automatic duplicates of your files in case one drive fails — but RAID 0 (striped) can be configured during setup. Stack your My Book collection even higher right now for $289.99 (1TB) / $549.99 (2TB).

LaCie brings Little Big Disk Quadra to 1TB

June 16th, 2008 by

Filed under:

LaCie introduced the Little Big Disk Quadra back in January, but the diminutive four-interface dual-drive enclosure is getting a new 1TB sibling today. Nothing new here apart from the capacity bump, but if you’re into the aluminum RAID 0 scene, $700 is all you need to ride.

Thecus unveils the massive N7700 eight-bay NAS

June 8th, 2008 by

Filed under:

The last time we checked in with Thecus, they’d broken off a five-bay NAS called the N5200. Well, it appears the company upped the ante just a touch at this year’s Computex with its new array — an eight-bay monster known as the N7700. The massive storage appliance doesn’t seem to deviate from the previous model much, utilizing a Celeron CPU to control the system, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, and a wide variety of RAID options (0, 1, 5, 6, 10 and JBOD). We don’t have word on pricing or availability just yet, but hopefully the archiving of your of “films” and “music purchases” can wait.

Sans Digital’s CS1T and CR2T turn CF cards into 2.5-inch enclosures

May 24th, 2008 by

Sans CR2T

We’ve seen CF-SATA converters before, but what if you were to create a SATA shaped, sized, and interfaced enclosure and allow users to throw Compact Flash cards in there to make their own SSDs for more standard installs? Sans Digital’s CS1T is a single-card Compact Flash CF to 2.5″ SATA enclosure and the CR2T is a dual-card enclosure that uses RAID to support up to 64GB. Both utilize IDE and, when closed, look and act just like 2.5-inch HDDs for your various installation needs.

ACARD’s dual 2.5-inch RAID enclosure is slim, hungry for power

May 1st, 2008 by

Filed under:

If you’re looking for an odd, yet usable storage solution, perhaps ACARD’s Mirror Smart Mini is the thing for you. The device uses two 2.5-inch SATA drives side by side in a small enclosure; the drives can be mapped as a hardware-based RAID 1 array, or can be used as separate devices. The aluminum casing plugs into your system using USB 2.0, but unfortunately requires an AC adapter for power, thus making it slightly less awesome than we want it to be. Regardless, if you’re moving around a lot and need a backup option, you might have found your $69 answer.

IO Data unveils DiXiM HVL4-G2.0 NAS for Regza HDTVs

April 9th, 2008 by

IO Data took the wraps off of a new HDD unit made specifically to attach to those new Regza ZH500s, the DiXim HVL4-G2.0 is compliant with the latest DLNA / DTCP-IP standards to easily record TV shows via the network. It’s got space for four drives up to a maximum capacity of 2 TB in a RAID 5 array, limiting recording space to a max of 1.5 TB. Because of copy protection, it only records from Toshiba’s TVs right now, and can be controlled completely via remote. Doubt we’ll be seeing this here anytime soon, but it’ll be on store shelves in Japan later this month for 111,615 ($1,090 US).

A-DATA demoes 128GB SATA RAID SSD

January 8th, 2008 by

After swinging by A-DATA’s booth, we happened to notice the number 128GB placed neatly atop SATA RAID SSD — needless to say, our lens was immediately attracted. Reportedly, this 2.5-inch drive includes a pair of 64GB SSDs, but we weren’t able to tell whether the unit pictured above was a finalized product. Unfortunately, we also aren’t sure how close this thing is to going commercial, but it’s a delightful glimmer of hope if nothing else, eh?

Battleship Mtron: the absurdly fast SSD RAID array

December 13th, 2007 by

Filed under:

Listen, we know you think your RAID setup is pretty snazzy, and, truth be told, it probably makes our rig look silly by comparison. However, in the computer world, there’s always someone out there with a bigger, nastier system — and we’ve just spotted one of the nastiest of them all. Next Level Hardware is a site that specializes in putting outrageous setups to the test, and this time they haven’t disappointed with their benchmarks on the Mtron 16GB SSD (reportedly the fastest SATA drive in the world). Oh, did we mention the test was on a RAID 0 array of nine drives? Dubbed the “Battleship Mtron,” the sickening collection of hardware blazed past the competition (a WD Raptor, less stacked Mtron RAID setups), delivering mind-boggling data swaps like copying a 1GB folder in four seconds. You read that right: four seconds. Like where this is headed? Truck over to the test page and peep all the stats… seriously, it’s upsetting.

[Thanks, David]

QNAP’s 4-bay TS-409 NAS box gets peeked early

December 13th, 2007 by

Filed under:

What do you get when you mix a TS-209 in with two extra drive bays and a new design? Why, the TS-409, of course! This not-yet-released NAS drive reportedly supports RAID 0/1/5 and JBOD, doubles as a UPnP media server and doesn’t require the user to bust out a screwdriver each time he / she wants to access or swap out a HDD. Beyond that, not much is known about QNAP’s forthcoming device, but feel free to hit the read link for an early look at (and within) what should be landing in the not-too-distant future.

Stay At Home Servers out to shatter the stereotype

December 5th, 2007 by

Filed under:

We outright asked you how you’d alter Windows Home Server if you had the chance, and thankfully, none of you requested that these no good storage gizmos head right back to the office closet where “they belong.” Unfortunately, it seems that not everyone has been able to overlook tradition and see how beneficial a home server can truly be. Legions of such devices are trickling into abodes as we speak, and while some families are rejoicing, others are apparently being torn apart at the notion of such a handsome device setting up shop within the residence. Stay At Home Servers: it’s a debate sure to rage on long after the frosty months have passed, but just remember — a family that stores together, (generally) stays together.

Psst, check out the video in the read link if you’re completely befuddled.

Norazza PocketRAID takes data redundancy on the road

November 13th, 2007 by

Filed under:

Prebuilt RAID arrays are pretty mainstream now, but they’re usually massive in size and focused on sheer storage volume — two qualities Norazza’s PocketRAID eschews in the name of portable data redundancy. The 1.5-inch thick PocketRAID contains what we’re assuming is two 1.8-inch hard drives in a permanent RAID 1 configuration, allowing you to work with up to 320GB of data on the road without fear. The eSATA / USB 2.0 drives are shipping now, if you’ve got the coin — prices range from $439 for 120GB to a whopping $929 for 320GB of storage.

Buffalo unveils LS-WTGL/R1 NAS: up to 2TB in size

November 7th, 2007 by

Filed under:

Merely a fortnight after Buffalo cranked out a couple more no-frills units in its ever-expanding NAS lineup, along comes the LS-WTGL/R1 to take over as the new kid on the block. Available in a trio of sizes — 1TB, 1.5TB and 2TB — these drives all feature a USB socket, gigabit Ethernet jack and web-access abilities. Nothing fancy beyond that, but these bad boys will run you just ¥56,200 ($490), ¥95,600 ($835), and ¥126,500 ($1,105), respectively. Pick the smallest one up later this month, or hold out ’til mid-December if your heart desires one of the larger two.
