Ready for the tease? RED just announced an announcement. According to RED Prez, Jim Jannard, “no one has any idea how incredible this announcement will be.” A stream of words, specs, and renderings, we presume, all cobbled together on November 13th with a promise to put the “RED ONE announcement to shame by comparison… the biggest, most exciting and incredible thing.” So mark your calendar for November 13th — that’s the day RED DIGITAL comes clean with its Scarlet and Epic programs. We’re sure Nikon and Canon will be watching to see if RED launches its DSMC (Digital Still & Motion Camera) aimed squarley at the DSLR market, or not. Even if we have to er, settle, for a 3K Scarlet or 5K Epic video cameras, those aren’t bad consolation prizes, eh?
[Thanks, Brad]

Here’s an interesting one. That red / black Xbox 360 controller that was showcased back in July is now available to any ole consumer in the US, Canada, Latin America New Zealand and Asia, and it comes bundled with a Play & Charge Kit and red rechargeable battery for $64.99. For whatever reason, Microsoft’s totally missing a golden opportunity to cash in on the holiday shopping season by reserving the green counterpart as some “promotional item.” C’mon guys, is it really that hard to understand how irresistible a red and green gamepad tandem would be in late December?

Looks like the HD video-capable Canon 5D Mark II and Nikon D90 had quite an impact at RED headquarters — company president Jim Jannard just posted a note saying that the upcoming Scarlet 3K camera is “all different now” because “the market has changed.” That’s particularly interesting because Jannard’s also mentioned that RED’s working on a video-capable DSLR and recently pointed out that the D90’s CMOS sensor tech leads to “jelly movement” when shooting video — a problem RED solved long ago with the RED ONE’s proprietary CMOS sensor, so we’re guessing a few of these threads are coming together. We’ll see when we see — if RED produces anything within the price spectrum of the D90 and 5D Mark II, it’ll shake things up pretty significantly.

You heard that Nikon busted out a DSLR with a 720p movie mode, right? Even that is going to pale in comparison to RED’s alternative, or at least that’s what RED would have you to believe. In a recent post over at the REDuser forums, Jannard points out that its DSLR “replacement” should be ready to rock by late 2009, and while an official name has yet to arrive, it’s going by DSMC (Digital Still & Motion Camera) for the time being. Also of note, Jannard casually mentioned that this piece would be more advanced than Nikon’s D90 and an undisclosed 1080p DSLR from Canon; that’s the first we’ve heard of such a beast, but given the natural progression of technology, we suppose it fits. C’mon guys, 3K 4K 5K shooting in a DSLR, we know you can do it.

Red CEO, Jim Jannard, is stirring up trouble in the RED User forums, J. Wong-style. His latest volley discusses the new Mysterium “Monstro” sensor program, the next evolution (and future free upgrade) to the Mysterium X sensor slated for RED’s 5k Epic. The most interesting revelation though is this little nugget: in addition to Epic, RED plans to place Monstro into, “another camera aimed squarely at the DSLR market.” He later adds, “Future cameras will shoot ultra-high resolution stills and motion…” Now, considering that the second generation, full-frame, ~25 megapixel Mysterium X is already a serious challenge to 35mm film, we can only imagine what this DSLR with a third generation RED sensor might offer. Hear that Nikon? Your D90 is just the beginning of this story. Let’s just hope that televisions and monitors, already struggling to reach 4k, Quad HD can keep pace.
[Thanks, Jundai]

You wouldn’t think that anyone in the market for a $3,000 handheld camera capable of shooting 3K HD at 100MB/s would somehow get confused enough to end up with a medicore LG plasma TV, but it seems like the folks at RED are worried — the company’s lawyers are preparing an opposition to LG’s filing for the “Scarlet” trademark, and they’ve filed for their own mark. It looks like RED is getting pretty serious about protecting its marks — president Jim Jannard is politely asking RED fans to include a trademark disclaimer when they post about the company’s products, and he says that the proceedings against LG are “just the tip of the iceberg.” Honestly, we think RED’s going to have a tough time selling a judge on the likelihood of confusion between a consumer-oriented HDTV and a decidedly pro-grade camera, but we’ve been surprised in the past — we’ll see how this one plays out.

We won’t even front with you — we have some serious doubts about this one, but with all those other red handsets that have emerged on Sprint over the years, we suppose that image above has a sliver of credence. We’ve no details whatever outside of two more shots of the red HTC Touch Diamond (or Victor, to be proper) in the read link, but these could very well be someone’s best shot at using Photoshop to gain 15 minutes of internet fame. What say you, dear readers? Real or fake?

From the word go, amateurs and professionals alike were hot for RED’s (relatively) minuscule Scarlet. After all, can you really go wrong with a 3K camera in one hand and a Dairy Queen dipped cone in the other? (No, no you cannot.) Nevertheless, those anxious to see more as the run-up to its early 2009 release continues can feast their eyes on an all new rendering. Oh, and if you’re the talkative type, tag the read link and join in the 8+ page discussion about that image you’re eyes are still fixated on above.

Get it while you can. A new coupon is available which cuts the original $1,599 price of Dell’s XPS One (PRODUCT) RED to just $1,199. That’s $100 less than the entry level XPS One. Now, let’s race to see who can void the offer faster ’cause this is one hell of a deal. Instructions after the break. Ready… go!
P.S. US only.

Not unlike the early colorized versions of the original Zune before it, the red Zune 80 looks like it should finally be ready to make its un-tattooed retail sales debut . If you’ve been considering getting loud and/or proud with your next Zune, call ahead to your local gadget stock keeper and see if they’re in.

RED’s trifecta of hot new gear announcements at NAB wrapped up with the RED RAY optical disk drive, which promises to play back 4K video from the RED ONE, 3K video from the new Scarlet and the usual assortment of HD formats from RED Disc and RED Express media, as well as native R3D RAW files from CompactFlash. 5K video from the new EPIC isn’t supported, though. As with all of RED’s announcements today, specs are promised to change, but the clever name of the drive has us thinking that it’s based on Blu-ray — we’ll keep digging for details.

It’s not quite as technologically interesting as the N95 8GB for North America, but bright, pretty colors can certainly sell as many phones as a good chunk of internal ROM can. We spotted an in-your-face red N95 at the Nokia booth of Digital Experience this evening, and guess what? It’s not custom painted, it’s not some sort of funky special edition — it’s real, it’s coming, and more importantly, it’s coming here. Word on the street we’ll see it before the first quarter’s out for $599, implying that there’s a little price drop for N95s of all colors in the cards for the near future.

Details are totally sketchy, but it looks like there’s about to be another Red HD camera to lust after: a posting from CEO Jim Jannard on the Red user forums confirms that Red will be launching a “pocket professional” camera named “Scarlet” sometime this year, with prototypes to be shown off at NAB in April. Jannard says the camera won’t be a competitor or replacement for the Red One, but that’s all we’ve got for now — but you know we’ll be all over this thing as info comes in.
