BlackBerry Storm 9530 for Verizon gets boxed

August 27th, 2008 by

So we might not have a physical device here, but these packaging renderings are pretty solid evidence of exactly what BlackBerry fans on Verizon — particularly those jealous of the Bold — can expect in a few weeks’ time. It looks like RIM’s first foray into the scary world of touchscreens will be officially branded the 9530 Storm, will be global (it includes a SIM card, after all), and will feature an 8GB SanDisk microSD card preinstalled. Wondering what happened to the Thunder name? Turns out that’ll apparently be reserved for the version of the phone launching on Rogers up in Canada and on Vodafone across the pond. Those Storm users on the screen there sure look happy, don’t they?

BlackBerry Bold hits Rogers on August 21st, so get your thumbs worked-out

August 19th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Well, it looks like that long, painful wait is finally over. According to all kinds of tipsters, the BlackBerry Bold touches down for the first time in North America (in its home country of Canada, obviously) come August 21st (that’s this Thursday, in case you don’t own a calendar, computer, or have any friends). That’s right — the Bold will land on Rogers (where else?) with a price tag set somewhere between the dark valley of $300 and $400, according to Research In Motion co-CEO Jim Balsillie. Reports say the phone will be available from other carriers by the end of the week, though we don’t have any definitive rumblings that confirm such heavenly ideas. You’ll know more when we do, of course.

Elephantine BlackBerry Bold promo kit arrives for Rogers

August 13th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We understand the need to catch eyes these days, and while Rogers will certainly not be the first nor last to promote a new piece of kit with an obscenely large version of said kit, this one just takes brobdingnagian marketing to a new plateau. The absolutely gigantic Rogers Bold launch kit includes a plethora of Bold flyers, informational pamphlets and all sorts of other goodies that’ll be handed out to prospective buyers shortly. The real question is: who gets to take this thing home once the buzz dies down?

[Thanks, Michael]

Rogers announces iPhone 3G plans, unlimited data isn’t one of them

June 27th, 2008 by

var digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/OFFICIAL_Rogers_announces_iPhone_3G_plans’; Here we have it, iPhone 3G pricing for our better mannered, gun-toting friends up north. All the plans from Rogers Wireless require that lovely, three-year contract and include visual voicemail, free evenings and weekends, and unlimited WiFi at all Rogers and Fido hotspots. The plans start at $60/month for 150 minutes of voice and just 400MB of data before topping out at $115/month for 800 minutes voice and up to 2GB of data. None of these plans offer unlimited data as previously rumored. See the details after the break.

Palm Centro makes its Canadian debut with Rogers

June 16th, 2008 by

Filed under:

It still hasn’t quite made the rounds of US carriers, but it looks like that hasn’t stopped the Palm Centro from hopping across the border to make its Canadian debut on Rogers. If that’s the moment you’ve somehow been waiting for, and you’re an existing Rogers customer, you get your hands on one now for $199 with a three-year plan and minimum $45 monthly service fee, while new customers will have to fork over $299 and jump through the same contract hoops. Of course, there is also that other little phone that’s making its long-awaited Canadian debut on Rogers next month, but we’re guessing that anyone planning to go that route has already pretty firmly made up their mind.

8GB Nokia N95 lands on Rogers, sticks tongue out at AT&T

May 2nd, 2008 by

Filed under:

Get this: the first North American carrier to offer up Nokia’s 8GB N95 isn’t AT&T. Heck, it’s not even a US-based operator. No friends, it’s Canada’s own Rogers Wireless. Just as we had heard late last month, the N95 8GB has officially landed in the Great North, and starting on May 6th, consumers up that way will be able to secure one for a hefty $399.99 with a three-year activation on the Rogers Vision Unlimited On-Device Mobile Browsing Plan. Don’t weep too heavily, AT&T users — your time should be coming soon.

iPhone invading Canada tomorrow?

January 15th, 2008 by

Filed under:

According to a report from the market-mindful Bloomberg, old Jobsy could be dropping the iPhone on Canada come tomorrow’s keynote. If you believe what RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky says (and that’s a big if), Apple will unleash the phone via Rogers Communications — the country’s largest mobile service provider. “There’s a very good chance that Apple will announce or discuss some kind of other carrier roll-outs, beyond the ones it has done in Europe and the U.S.” He said, adding that, “There is definitely very strong demand and interest here.” To which we say, “Duh,” and, “Hey, we’ve heard this before.” Though we’re not sure Steve will have time for the Canadian launch in his keynote, what with all the algae-based hard drives, unicorn laptops, and rays of pure energy he’ll be introducing.

[Thanks, Paolo]

Rogers Wireless expecting iPhone home for the holidays?

November 9th, 2007 by

Filed under:

TUAW has posted up a potentially sweet holiday tidbit with the Canadian Apple store showing an iPhone in its holiday gift guide. Of course, as some clever reader has pointed out, the Italian Apple store is also showing an iPhone with a bit of cut and paste wizardry, could this be a case of just a template mistake on Apple’s part? We know iPhone’s coming to the Great White North — or at least are pretty sure — and the holidays do make sense, but until we hear something official, we’d lean toward error on this one. Check your local site and post back with your findings, make a game of it.

Rumor: iPhone coming to Canada on December 7th?

October 28th, 2007 by

Filed under:

According to a Boy Genius Report that shows an alleged leaked advertisement, Rogers could be launching the iPhone on its network on December 7th. You’re gonna need to take this with a big grain of salt though: the depicted iPhone doesn’t show the Rogers logo on the actual iPhone, a red bow effect awkwardly cuts through text on the iPhone, and some comments point out that the Rogers logo is drawn incorrectly. We’re leaning towards Photoshop job at this point — what happened to the trademark dispute? — but if it’s true, Canadians could be looking at paying $499.99 of their dollars plus signing up to a three year contract in order to pick up their own iPhone. Is the border really that far?

[Thanks, Rich]

Molson contest hints at Canadian iPhone launch in January

October 25th, 2007 by

Filed under:

We’ve certainly had plenty of hints that the iPhone was headed to Rogers in Canada sooner or later, but it looks like those rumors may now be reaching the boiling point, with a new Molson contest offering the clearest indication yet of the iPhone’s launch in Canada. As you can see above, the contest rules clearly state that the phone will be available on Rogers starting in January 2008, and that the winners will have to pay for the service charges themselves. It also lists the iPhone with a value of $800, which is more than a little curious especially given the now mighty loonie. According to The Globe & Mail, a Rogers spokeswoman says the contest came as a surprise, adding that “Molson is speculating and that Rogers wouldn’t launch the iPhone this way.” Either way, it seems like we should know more soon enough, unless Molson has plans to deal some unhappy contest winners.
