iPhone 3.0 to have copy and paste, Pre-like features — but no background apps

March 15th, 2009 by

Digg’s Kevin Rose has a solid (but far from perfect) track record when it comes to Apple rumors, and he just drove the nerds of SXSWi crazy with his latest gaze into the crystal ball: he says the iPhone 3.0 will have copy and paste. Kev says that the interface is much like the magnifying glass — you use two fingers to select the text you want, and then you can cut or copy. Sure, that’s great, but we think the bigger news is that Rose says 3.0 won’t have support for background apps — which makes his claim that that 3.0 will bring the iPhone “up to speed with the Palm Pre” a little suspect. We’ll find out what’s what in just a few days, but in the meantime check the video of Rose after the break.

Telefonica scores global Pre coup?

March 11th, 2009 by

Carriers and Palm have been absolutely silent on the matter, but let’s be honest: there’s very likely been one of the most heated, no-holds-barred wars over the past few months to score European exclusivity on the Pre since the Storm and the iPhone — and with launches broadly expected by mid-year, time is running out to secure a deal. Spanish media is reporting that Telefonica has now locked up that deal, not just for Spain and the UK (where it operates as O2) but for Latin America as well under the Movistar brand. If true, that’d be a nice, big “screw you” to archrival Vodafone, which has the mighty Storm / Magic two-pack under its belt. Even more interesting, though, is the fact that most of Latin America operates 3G on the 850 and 1900MHz bands — the very same used in the US and Canada — which means that our assumptions that the Pre would be 2100-only may have been wrong all along. Awesomely wrong. We wouldn’t get our hopes up that the Pre will be a walk in the park to unlock and use on AT&T or Rogers just yet, but it’s a glimmer of hope that we’ll gladly take.

Apple store down: 4GB iPod shuffle on the way?

March 11th, 2009 by

Yeah, we know, the Apple Store’s down. We had presumed it to be regular maintenance. After all, it’s not Tuesday and there’s not a single Apple rumor in the mix that would warrant such a quiet product launch. Then we peeped MacRumors and low and behold Arn’s got a source claiming 4GB iPod shuffles (up from 2GB) are on the way in black, silver, and possibly other colors. Makes sense to us.

Samsung A877 with AMOLED touchscreen coming to AT&T this month?

March 10th, 2009 by

Are we looking at the best thing this side of a smartphone to grace AT&T? Quite possibly, and jilted Quickfire owners who miss the form factor should probably be taking note. Rumor has it that we’re looking at the Samsung A877 here, delivering some 3.2 inches of AMOLED glory at WQVGA resolution, a 3 megapixel cam with geotagging support, TouchWiz (naturally), GPS, HSDPA, and a landscape slide-out full QWERTY keyboard. Even better, PhoneDog’s tipster says it’ll be hitting just a couple weeks away on March 29, so we don’t have terribly long to wait. The Eternity just got a whole lot less interesting, eh?

Apple’s touch-screen netbook gets another shot of rumor juice

March 10th, 2009 by

Yesterday’s Apple netbook rumor courtesy of the Commercial Times / DigiTimes combo just received a boost of credibility by sources (presumably independent) speaking to the Dow Jones Newswire. Citing “two people close to the situation,” the DJ pretty much regurgitates the same info: Wintek will provide the touch-screen display which Quanta will manufacture into an Apple netbook as early as the second half of the year. The only new bit of information is the screen size said to be between 9.7 and 10-inches.

Samsung Instinct Mini spotted by Mr. Blurrycam

March 5th, 2009 by

Samsung may be cranking out all manner of new TouchWiz phones and Sprint might be Pre-occupied*, but nothing can stop the Instinct… from getting smaller. Yep, images of what’s claimed to be an Instinct Mini have popped up on the SprintUsers forum, and while there are no hard details available, we’re guessing Boy Genius Report’s April 19th date is close — we just saw a handset labeled SPH-M810 hit the FCC, and the original Instinct is the SPH-M800. Next up: Instinct Nano rumors. More photos at the read link!

*We’re sorry. It won’t happen again.

Nokia says it’ll have LTE devices by 2010, Verizon partnership in the works?

March 5th, 2009 by

Given Nokia Siemens’ commitment to getting the technology rolled out with carrier partners on the double and the fact that Nokia’s tie-up with Qualcomm for S60-optimized HSPA and LTE chipsets will bear fruit in 2010 — not to mention the fact that multiple carriers will be deploying LTE over the next two years — it only stands to reason that Espoo would have LTE devices in the pipe sooner rather than later. Indeed, the company has now gone on record saying that it’ll have “data intensive” LTE gadgets launched next year, though they’ve failed to go into the nitty gritty details of what kind of devices those might be. That could very well be where this new rumor comes into play, though: TheStreet.com is claiming that there’s chatter of a Verizon / Nokia partnership that would see a serious full touchscreen multimedia phone launched to help inaugurate Big Red’s LTE airwaves — and considering that Nokia has ramped up its Verizon-branded product portfolio over the past year and publicly cheered on the carrier for choosing LTE over WiMAX or UMB, it’s not all that difficult to believe. If the rumored device comes in a brown pleather wallet, count us in.

HTC’s rumored 2009 lineup gets fleshed out with specs, dates

March 4th, 2009 by

Remember HTC’s huge lineup leak from earlier this year? Apparently somebody has trickled a few more details about the sets out, as we get a better look at the when, the where, and the all-important how much. Of course, we have to preface the info on the following six sets with the fact that we’ve no way to know the absolute truth or if we’ll see them land as things have a way of changing. So until you hear it from HTC, consider the following leak a thing of dreams. First up, the Firestone, a 3G set that replaces the Touch HD with a 3.6-inch WVGA display, an 8 megapixel — HTC’s first — camera, runs Windows Mobile 6.5, and is slated to appear in August this year. Next, a slate-style set called Whitestone with the same display as the Firestone, a 5 megapixel camera, Windows Mobile 6.1, and is apparently a dual-mode GSM / EV-DO number due to launch with Verizon in the September timeframe. The Thoth — Athena’s replacement — is also present with a 4.8-inch display, a 5 megapixel shooter, the Qualcomm 8250 CPU at 1GHz, and will also run Microsoft’s newest Windows Mobile 6.5 when it lands in September. HTC’s Twin is another dual-band candybar set with a 3.2-inch VGA interface (no date), the HTC Maple is an HTC Cavalier successor with a 2.4-inch screen, 2 megapixel camera, Windows Mobile 6.1 device that appears in May. Last up, the HTC Cedar, which was originally touted as debuting on Verizon in June and has potentially been canceled. OK, that potentially sorts Windows Mobile for the year with HTC, so now lets get some details on Android sets, mkay HTC?

Apple rumor Monday, late edition: leaked specs, model numbers, announcement tomorrow?

March 2nd, 2009 by

The flood of Apple hardware rumors just won’t let up — not only did commenters dig through those Airport Extreme and Time Capsule FCC filings and find evidence that the new models will indeed support simultaneous 5GHz and 2.4GHz operation, we’ve got iMac model numbers and leaked specs for Mac mini and Mac Pro, all of which are said to be arriving as soon as tomorrow. Of course, given the conservative / obvious nature of these updates, all of this information could be coming from some fanboy lair deep in a parents’ basement somewhere and still sound plausible, but hey — we’ll find out soon enough, right? Here’s what we know so far:

  • The iMac will apparently come in an entry level MB147 20-inch model, as well as three 24-inch SKUs: MB148 “mass-market,” MB149 “high-end,” and MB420 “ultimate.” All models will go to mini DisplayPort and feature Core 2 Duos up to 3.06GHz.
  • The Mac mini will indeed feature five USB ports and that funky dual mini-DVI / mini DisplayPort configuration, but it’s also apparently going to an NVIDIA chipset like the MacBooks and iMac. The base MB463 model will start with a 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo, and there’s also a “high-end” MB464 configuration.
  • The Mac Pro will come in eight-core configurations from 3.0GHz to 3.6GHz and 16-core configurations in 3.6GHz and 4.0GHz flavors, and it sounds like it’s going to be even funkier on the video tip — our tipster says it has two regular DVI ports and a mini DisplayPort. Sure, okay. It’s also apparently a bit lighter than the current model, at 35 pounds instead of 42.
  • Tipster Tom noted that the Airport Extreme and Time Capsule FCC filings contain direct references to simultaneous 5GHz and 2.4GHz operation, so that’s looking even more probable.

Obviously we’ll let you know if all this stuff slips out with no fanfare tomorrow, but with PMA and CeBIT both going on right now, we think that March 24 date is more likely — Apple does like to hog the attention, after all. Anyone else have any secrets to share? We’re all ears.

Apple planning a March 24 event?

March 1st, 2009 by

We’re not exactly making plans yet, but word on the street is that Apple’s planning a March 24 desktop hardware event. Both World of Apple (which has a decent track record) and a site called My Apple Guide (which we’ve never heard of but apparently has a “rough” prediction history) say the event’s on the books, and considering the age of the iMac and Mac mini and the uptick in rumors lately, it’s certainly plausible. We’ll wait until we get an official invite before we start making bold predictions, but we’re definitely hoping for a mini with at least 25 USB ports housed inside an old Disk ][.

Rumored AT&T trade-in program could provide easy alternative to eBay

March 1st, 2009 by

No question, you’ll totally score more for your old handset by listing it on eBay or Craigslist than turning it over to AT&T, but wouldn’t it be nice to have the option if you’re really in a bind? According to Boy Genius Report, the aforesaid carrier is mulling the idea of implementing a trade-in program that would allow existing subscribers to put a “used value” towards the purchase of a new phone. While none of this has yet to be confirmed, we’re told that any phone traded in must be less than two years old and in relatively good shape, and the new phone you’re after won’t have any subsidies attached; your trade-in value is the discount. Oh, and regardless of how awesome that shiny new whatever is, the maximum value of any trade is capped at $200. We’ll keep an ear to the ground for more, but we wouldn’t be shocked at all to see this go live sooner rather than later.

Asus’ P565 superphone canned due to Garmin partnership?

February 28th, 2009 by

Sad business if true, but the UnwiredView is reporting that ASUS’ P565 Windows Mobile 6.1-toting, VGA, HSDPA, Blazing 800MHz monster has been quietly dumped. The reason? Nobody’s talking and we’ve not heard reports from either Garmin or ASUS to verify it either way — it has actually launched in a Germany and Poland, at least — but according to GPSAndCo, its debut in France isn’t happening and they point to the new partnership as the reason. In the end, it does seem as if the Garmin / ASUS team is going to deliver some pretty serious goods, so we’ll not shed a tear unless something happens to them, too. Of course, this could all be fluff, so do tell us if you catch sight of one of these at your local shop.

Nokia laptop a Snapdragon or Atom-based netbook?

February 27th, 2009 by

Adding further fuel and confusion to the Nokia laptop fire sparked by yesterday’s comments from CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasuvo, we have DigiTimes reporting that Nokia is actively seeking Taiwanese manufacturing and design partners for its netbook — a very specific laptop form-factor. DigiTimes‘ sources wag their gossipy fingers in the direction of Compal and Foxconn (aka, Hon Hai Precision Industry) as the two most likely joint design manufacture (JDM) partners. However, instead of an ARM Cortex A9 Sparrow-powered device as speculated by Mobile-Review, DigiTimes claims that Nokia is developing a netbook powered by either Qualcomm’s Snapdragon (currently based around the ARMv7 architecture used in the ARM A8 Cortex CPU) or Intel’s Atom platforms. Of course, we could be looking at multiple form-factors from Nokia (MIDs, Netbooks, and laptops) in harmony with their successful approach to the mobile phone market.

Update: The chipset rumors are actually more closely aligned than they appeared at first glance. Mobile-Review said the Nokia’s Sparrow-based device wouldn’t ship until 2011 — that’s plenty of time for ARM-based Snapdragon to adopt the Cortex A9 processor.

ASUS Eee PC ‘Shell’ ultra-thin netbook launching in April?

February 27th, 2009 by

Between the Commercial Times and DigiTimes, no secret is safe within ASUS. The former is reporting (via the latter) that ASUS will launch its second generation ultra-thin Eee PC in April as followup to the Eee PC S101. The Eee PC Shell, as it’s supposedly called would mark a welcome departure from ASUS’ staid alphanumeric naming convention and is said to be easier to carry than the S101 while bringing higher specs and a longer battery life for just NT$17,000 - 20,000 ($486 - $571) — that’s well below the S101’s $699 suggested retail price. The name Shell, of course, would seem to imply a curved, clamshell design. Now, with one of ASUS’ favorite events, CeBIT, starting next week, we’d expect an announcement to be days away if the rumor is true — a high probability what with the launch of yesterday’s Eee PC firesale and Intel’s new CULV processors for ultra-slim laptops prepped for a March launch.

Sony CyberShot DSC-HX1 with 20x zoom and 1080p video rumored

February 27th, 2009 by

The rumor mill seems to be coalescing around a new CyberShot DSC-HX1 camera from Sony in the run-up to the big PMA camera show next week. In fact, on-line camera shops are already adding placeholders for Sony’s new flagship, super-zoom with 1080p video and HQ sound. If true, we’re just days away from seeing the official launch of a 9 megapixel (CMOS) camera with 20x zoom, 2.7-inch (possibly 3.0-inch like the DSC-H50) LCD, optical SteadyShot with anti-motion blur, and a 10fps burst rate at unspecified resolution. Rumor also has it priced at £400 which directly translates to $571 — though it’ll likely be priced between $400 and $500 (pre-tax) Stateside as these things generally go.

Nokia working on laptops, ARM-powered MID?

February 25th, 2009 by

If you were looking for proof that the line between smartphones and laptops is rapidly starting to blur, look no further — Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasuvo told Reuters today that the Finnish company is “looking very actively” at making a laptop, since “what we we know as a cellphone and what we know as a PC are in many ways converging.” Sounds about right to us — but even more interestingly, we’re also getting word from the generally-reliable Mobile-Review that Espoo’s working on a MID powered by the new multicore ARM Cortex A9 Sparrow chip. If M-R is to be believed, the new device will only somewhat resemble the current N-series Internet Tablets, instead featuring a slide-out keyboard with diamond-shaped keys and a new widget-based interface. That’s a mockup from Unwired View above, and we think it looks pretty nice — although we’re hoping Nokia’s moved well beyond this hybrid N97 / Internet Tablet design language by the time this thing launches in 2011. This sort of convergence is definitely the next big trend, so we’ve got to ask: smartphone, MID, netbook or laptop — what’s in your (potentially giant) pocket?

PS3 price cut may be on the way very soon, says analyst

February 25th, 2009 by

Mike Hickey, an analyst with Janco, says that a major price cut on the Playstation 3 could be on the way in the near, near future (like, in the next few days). Hickey claims that the price slash needs to be at least $100 to get the retail juice moving again, and that, failing that, Sony should expect to see its sales on the console continue to decline. We’ve heard predictions of a coming price reduction already (sure, they were from Microsoft, but whatever), and this wouldn’t be a huge surprise, though we’ll just have to wait and see. Hickey also speculates that Sony could hack the Blu-ray out of the PS3 in order to make that price cut doable, but that seems slightly wild to us. Then again, stranger things have happened.

Rumor mill says public Windows 7 Release Candidate coming on April 10th

February 21st, 2009 by

Ars Technica is reporting that several sources are now pointing to a likely Release Candidate build of Windows 7 being made publicly available on April 10th. While we can’t attest to the probability of this occurence… occuring on that date, they’re also reporting that the development team’s progress is confirmed as being on track for that date, so we’ll just have to wait with breath baited to see if the unicorn (our term for the OS) appears then or not.

New Mac mini revealed in video?

February 20th, 2009 by

Look, we’ll level with you: we don’t know exactly what we’re looking at. After seeing that Mac mini pic yesterday, we were about 140 percent sure it was a classic Photoshop disaster. Now we don’t know what to think. One thing is for sure — this isn’t done with Photoshop. The above video was offered up by the original poster of the first pic to back up his or her claims of a “2009 Penryn” mini. Something feels fishy about this, but it’s hard to write off the video as pure sleep-deprivation-induced fantasy. So what do you guys think? Crazy mod, new mini, shared hallucination? Fire back in comments!

Philips Net TV rumored to go live in April

February 20th, 2009 by

We’ve been hearing about Philips’ attempt to jump on the burgeoning connected HDTV bandwagon for nearly a year now, but at long last, it seems like the company will finally be making it happen — months after everyone else stole the thunder at CES. At any rate, Pocket-lint has it that the aforesaid outfit is readying its Net TV module — which should be an add-on of some sort that connects via wire to its 8000, 9000 and Cinema 21:9 HDTVs — for an April release. The box will purportedly bring the web’s best content to your HDTV through an easy-to-understand user interface, and the WiFi capability means that you won’t have to run an Ethernet cable to your set. Like most everything Philips does in the HDTV / home entertainment space, we suspect this will also be limited to Europe, but a boy can dream, can’t he?
