Digg’s Kevin Rose has a solid (but far from perfect) track record when it comes to Apple rumors, and he just drove the nerds of SXSWi crazy with his latest gaze into the crystal ball: he says the iPhone 3.0 will have copy and paste. Kev says that the interface is much like the magnifying glass — you use two fingers to select the text you want, and then you can cut or copy. Sure, that’s great, but we think the bigger news is that Rose says 3.0 won’t have support for background apps — which makes his claim that that 3.0 will bring the iPhone “up to speed with the Palm Pre” a little suspect. We’ll find out what’s what in just a few days, but in the meantime check the video of Rose after the break.

Samsung may be cranking out all manner of new TouchWiz phones and Sprint might be Pre-occupied*, but nothing can stop the Instinct… from getting smaller. Yep, images of what’s claimed to be an Instinct Mini have popped up on the SprintUsers forum, and while there are no hard details available, we’re guessing Boy Genius Report’s April 19th date is close — we just saw a handset labeled SPH-M810 hit the FCC, and the original Instinct is the SPH-M800. Next up: Instinct Nano rumors. More photos at the read link!
*We’re sorry. It won’t happen again.

The flood of Apple hardware rumors just won’t let up — not only did commenters dig through those Airport Extreme and Time Capsule FCC filings and find evidence that the new models will indeed support simultaneous 5GHz and 2.4GHz operation, we’ve got iMac model numbers and leaked specs for Mac mini and Mac Pro, all of which are said to be arriving as soon as tomorrow. Of course, given the conservative / obvious nature of these updates, all of this information could be coming from some fanboy lair deep in a parents’ basement somewhere and still sound plausible, but hey — we’ll find out soon enough, right? Here’s what we know so far:
- The iMac will apparently come in an entry level MB147 20-inch model, as well as three 24-inch SKUs: MB148 “mass-market,” MB149 “high-end,” and MB420 “ultimate.” All models will go to mini DisplayPort and feature Core 2 Duos up to 3.06GHz.
- The Mac mini will indeed feature five USB ports and that funky dual mini-DVI / mini DisplayPort configuration, but it’s also apparently going to an NVIDIA chipset like the MacBooks and iMac. The base MB463 model will start with a 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo, and there’s also a “high-end” MB464 configuration.
- The Mac Pro will come in eight-core configurations from 3.0GHz to 3.6GHz and 16-core configurations in 3.6GHz and 4.0GHz flavors, and it sounds like it’s going to be even funkier on the video tip — our tipster says it has two regular DVI ports and a mini DisplayPort. Sure, okay. It’s also apparently a bit lighter than the current model, at 35 pounds instead of 42.
- Tipster Tom noted that the Airport Extreme and Time Capsule FCC filings contain direct references to simultaneous 5GHz and 2.4GHz operation, so that’s looking even more probable.
Obviously we’ll let you know if all this stuff slips out with no fanfare tomorrow, but with PMA and CeBIT both going on right now, we think that March 24 date is more likely — Apple does like to hog the attention, after all. Anyone else have any secrets to share? We’re all ears.

We’re not exactly making plans yet, but word on the street is that Apple’s planning a March 24 desktop hardware event. Both World of Apple (which has a decent track record) and a site called My Apple Guide (which we’ve never heard of but apparently has a “rough” prediction history) say the event’s on the books, and considering the age of the iMac and Mac mini and the uptick in rumors lately, it’s certainly plausible. We’ll wait until we get an official invite before we start making bold predictions, but we’re definitely hoping for a mini with at least 25 USB ports housed inside an old Disk ][.

If you were looking for proof that the line between smartphones and laptops is rapidly starting to blur, look no further — Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasuvo told Reuters today that the Finnish company is “looking very actively” at making a laptop, since “what we we know as a cellphone and what we know as a PC are in many ways converging.” Sounds about right to us — but even more interestingly, we’re also getting word from the generally-reliable Mobile-Review that Espoo’s working on a MID powered by the new multicore ARM Cortex A9 Sparrow chip. If M-R is to be believed, the new device will only somewhat resemble the current N-series Internet Tablets, instead featuring a slide-out keyboard with diamond-shaped keys and a new widget-based interface. That’s a mockup from Unwired View above, and we think it looks pretty nice — although we’re hoping Nokia’s moved well beyond this hybrid N97 / Internet Tablet design language by the time this thing launches in 2011. This sort of convergence is definitely the next big trend, so we’ve got to ask: smartphone, MID, netbook or laptop — what’s in your (potentially giant) pocket?

Well, what do we have here? According to MacRumors, this could quite possibly be the next-gen Mac mini we’ve been waiting so patiently for. This guy would seem to correspond roughly to other possible “leaks” we’ve been hipped to in the past, including the presence of five USB ports, FireWire 800, Mini DisplayPort, and Mini DVI. Coincidence? Underhanded Photoshoppery? You be the judge.
Update: Looks like the pic hit both MacRumors and AppleInsider at the same time, but the MR forum poster who put it up included some alleged specs: a 2GHz Core 2 Duo processor with 3MB Level 2 cache, 2GB DDR 3 memory at 1066MHz and a ATA Super Drive. Believe what you will!

If the above picture is to be believed, Sony Ericsson’s looking to release a new swivel-based QWERTY called the “Reese” that boasts one-click access to “your favorite networking sites.” Details beyond this ad are pretty light, and we’re not ruling out the possibility that this might be a fan render (as SE aficionados are fond of). Furthermore, the original poster told forum members at Esato that this device “will not be announced soon,” which makes the appearance of an advertisement even more perplexing. Regardless, we’ll know one way or another soon, as the company is just about to start its MWC press conference… and we’ll be there live.

So, this is sort of fun. The leaked photo above appears to be of a new iPhone back — in matte black. Sure, we have to be highly suspicious of all kinds of purported evidence of new products in general, and we’ve heard enough crazy Apple rumors over the years to fill an issue of US Weekly. Regardless, this one’s worth at least considering: it’s got a model number, A1303, that’s previously unseen, but has all the other requisite data, including FCC ID numbers, that we’ve grown to know and love on the back of real, actual, undoctored iPhones. Look, it’s probably fake. Discuss.
Update: Some more pics have surfaced — check one after the break and the other at MacRumors. Seems a bit early for these sorts of leaks to us, but crazier things have happened.

Because you’re not cool unless you’ve got an app store, Nokia is reportedly set to join the ranks of Apple, Palm, BlackBerry, Samsung, and pretty much everyone in opening a software portal for its Symbian OS. According to Mobile-Review editor Eldar Murtazin, the Finnish phone maker’s already got it running and is testing behind-the-scenes, with a formal announcement to come at the Mobile World Congress. While we’ll have to wait until Barcelona to find out with some degree of certainty, at this point we’d be more surprised to see a company not open up an online app shop.

Sketchy rumor Sunday, people — Chinese site Apple.pro is saying there’s a 15-inch MacBook Air in the works. That would certainly be an interesting compromise between portability and screen real estate, especially since the Air’s new NVIDIA-based internals are actually somewhat capable, but we wouldn’t bank on big brother making an appearance just yet — although Apple.pro was right on the money with leaked unibody MacBook pictures, it’s also been way off in the past. Anyone else mildly intrigued by the idea of a thin’n'light with big screen? Comments await.

People trading in salacious gossip have been counting on an update of the Mac mini for ages now, with most of the rumors centering on it making its appearance at Macworld. Well, the festivities came and went without a peep about the mini — but that hasn’t stopped the rumors from swirling. The latest we’re hearing is that the refresh will be built upon NVIDIA’s new Ion platform, which houses a 9400M GPU — the same graphics processor as the new unibody Macbooks — and could mean an even minier mini than the one we already know. Tom’s Hardware, the source of this newest rumor, also speculates on a March release date, though they’re not guessing on the price just yet.

So rumors of Dell doing a smartphone have been around forever, but they’ve started heating up again today — word on the street is that the company is planning a handset launch as early as next month at 3GSM or Mobile World Congress. That’s just chatter we’d ordinarily dismiss as nonsense, but we couldn’t help but notice most of the Dell people at the Adamo event were carrying G1s — and Dell’s director of consumer products was super-quick to pull out a Nokia E71 and gush over how well-built it was compared to other devices when we asked him where the Adamo line would be positioned. That jibes with long-standing rumors that Dell’s working on Android and/or S60 devices — rumors that Michael Dell himself refused to put to bed back in July. What does it all mean? Well, we have no idea, but we’d say that Dell’s new focus on consumer-oriented design suggests that WinMo isn’t really in the running if it is in fact planning a handset. We’ll see how it plays out over the next few months — we could be right, we could be wrong, but either way it should be interesting.

We’ve got less than 48 hours until Apple’s last Macworld keynote, and the rumor mill keeps hinting that Phil’s gonna announce new Mac minis, which so far are purported to have the Macbook’s NVIDIA chipset, aluminum casing, and an SATA optical drive that can be swapped out for a second HDD. Go ahead and add dual display support to that list, which is what Apple Insider is speculating based on their sources saying the new minis will sport both a mini DisplayPort and a mini DVI connector. Additionally, the site has managed to snap some shots from the Moscone Center of the expo being set up. There’s a picture of a monitor showing what’s presumed to be a live feed of the keynote rehearsal with a blurred figure that kind of looks like Al Gore, and inside the south hall there are several mysterious banners concealed in white cloth. So pretty much status quo, though is it just us or do the banners seem to look a little tired and thin this year?

A new report from Fudzilla claims that Microsoft is getting ready to lay off 15,000 employees, or about 17% of its worldwide staff. The axe will apparently fall on January 15th, exactly one week before its second quarter earnings report, and they expect MSN division to be hit hardest, while the successful Xbox crew will probably make it out relatively unscathed. Meanwhile, an anonymous blogger who goes by the name Mini-Microsoft and claims to be an employee well-versed in the goings-on inside the company has been fielding questions from other purported Microsoft workers on recent cutback concerns. This past Monday he posted a handful of anonymous comments saying that the rumored layoffs aren’t happening — at least not in January — although a re-organization might be in the cards. Both reports should be taken with a grain of salt, but one thing’s for certain — Windows 7 is gonna rule.

Listen, you know the drill by now: Macworld is less than a month away, and that causes a Cupertino-sized rumor mill to fill up with hints of new / refreshed hardware of all shapes and sizes. The crew at TUAW claim they’ve heard from sources that a new Mac mini will be unveiled with an aluminum finish, a Time Capsule-esque “lip,” and a SATA optical drive that can be customized as a second HDD instead. Additionally, TechCrunch says it has three independent sources that confirm there’s a large iPod touch is coming next Fall with a 7 or 9-inch screen. There’s no indication if they expect a Macworld announcement here, but if true, we expect the cargo pants industry to react accordingly. Finally, and possibly related to the TechCrunch rumor, a Taiwan news site claims Quanta Computers is expecting to add Apple and Sony (is that you, Vaio P?) as clients for manufacturing netbooks in 2009. For those playing along at home, at some point next year we should expect a bigger iPod touch, a netbook, a smaller iPhone, a revised iMac, a revised Mac mini, and absolutely no love at all for the Mac Pro.

Sure, that Photoshopped image of the VAIO P we got on Sunday wasn’t the real deal, but it looks like it might have some relation to reality — Sony’s got a teaser up for a “VAIO New Mobile” that includes some brief shots of a very swank-looking keyboard and tracking nub. We’ll be honest — we’re totally stoked to check this thing out at CES. Counting the days! One more shot after the break.

Apple’s said it’s taking a break from adding flashy features to OS X to focus on the foundations and stability of the system with Snow Leopard, and this latest leaked screenshot might indicate that those foundations are moving to 64 bits — it shows System Preferences saying it needs to restart in 32-bit mode to open the Network panel. That’s certainly interesting, given the rumors that Apple’s dropping support for non-Intel machines and maybe even 32-bit Intel processors with this release, but it could also just mean that whoever took this screenshot doesn’t have a 64-bit-friendly version of that preference pane installed. (We’re guessing the latter, since there are a lot of 32-bit only Core Duo Intel Macs out there.) Restarting apps to change modes seems pretty clunky, though — shades of System 7 and the 32-bit Enabler, for the olds — so we’re hoping Apple’s got a more elegant solution in the works. Macworld’s just around the corner, we’re sure we’ll hear more from Steve Phil soon.

We had an inkling that Casio and Verizon were up to something when we caught an Exilim-branded phone working its way through the FCC, and it looks like that hunch was right-on — check out this hot snap of an Exilim NX9250 that just turned up. We’re told that the chubby-looking handset features a 5.1 megapixel camera (right, Exilim) and “possibly” a WVGA screen, and those hinges suggest a swivel-flip design — too bad it doesn’t look as slick as that W63CA we were secretly hoping for. We’ll see what this one looks like all dolled up — we’ve got a feeling we’ll find out soon enough. One more shot after the break.

Sony isn’t being too coy with the VAIO P, is it? In addition to that teaser image, oh-so-beautiful FCC shot, and mistakenly-posted specs page, CNET’s uncovered this pic of the rectangular netbook with its lid open. We can’t really tell if the machine pictured has that crazy 8-inch 1600 x 768 display we’d heard about, but there’s a lot of the VAIO TT in those lines — so much so we’re wondering if it’s a ’shop, albeit a super-hot one. Of course, there’s no word on pricing, but we’re hoping it’s somewhere close to reasonable — we’ll find out in just a couple weeks at CES.
Update: We knew it looked a little too much like the TT — it’s a ’shop. Oh well, at least we can dream.

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/Latest_Breaking_Macbook_Pro_Pic_for_October_Release’; Well, maybe — we’re not calling it official until Steve pulls the cloth off himself tomorrow morning . Still, there’s no denying the similarities between this image and all those other case leaks we’ve seen, and the list of specs we’ve been given matches up as well — that “metal and glass” enclosure now houses an NVIDIA GPU, but no FireWire 400, and video-out is apparently through a connector “more compact” than MicroDVI. We’ll find out soon enough — oh, and just to amp up expectations, Boy Genius says he’s confirmed the existence of an $899 part number in Apple’s retail systems. Counting down…
Update: Our source just hit us with another pic, this time from the side — it’s after the break. We’re also told that there’s not one, but two NVIDIA GPUs inside — we’re guessing an integrated / discrete setup like in the VAIO Z, but we’ll find out for sure tomorrow.
Update 2: Our source just hit us again to say that it’s two full-on NVIDIA GPUs — wild. Wilder still, they say the MacBook and 17-inch MacBook Pro aren’t getting refreshed tomorrow, which we find hard to believe, but we’ll see when we see.
