Beep beep — Sprint’s looking to offload iDEN network?

August 9th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Still committed to iDEN, eh? After another relatively brutal quarter of lost cash, lost subscribers, and lost opportunities, word on the street is that Sprint might be rethinking its approach to its legacy push-to-talk network — the obsolescence-bound spectrum it acquired via its purchase of Nextel a few years back for the questionable price of $35 billion. Given Sprint’s current financial state, a liquidity crunch means that the carrier is looking to offload any salable piece; Nextel’s not exactly the most attractive piece of that puzzle with a declining subscriber base, limited bandwidth, and a limited range of Moto hardware to back it up, but even at its current estimated value of $5 billion, analysts are suggesting that Sprint could be willing to bite at a deal. NII Holdings, which operates iDEN networks under the Nextel brand in Brazil, Mexico, and a handful of other Latin American countries, is being tossed around as a potential suitor, as are private equity firms looking to make a quick buck. How one goes about making a quick buck on a network as old and quirky as iDEN in the year 2008, though, remains to be seen.

Motorola to reorganize home and networks mobility business

July 27th, 2008 by

So we waffled on whether to go with a sad Moto or happy Moto face, but as we’ve stated in the past, we suppose we’ll keep on keepin’ on with the former until something marvelous happens. Nearly four months to the day after Motorola split in two, along comes word that the separated home and networks division will now be segmented into three distinct units: broadband home solutions, broadband access solutions and cellular networks. According to a statement put out by the firm, the “organizational change will ensure that home and networks mobility remains agile, focused and ideally aligned to realize its growth potential,” which is about as canned a statement as you could ever hope for. We’ve heard that three’s company, but who knows how it’ll play out here.

Sprint Nextel sells off “nearly all” of its towers to TowerCo for $670 million

July 24th, 2008 by

Details are scarce right now, but you can make of it what you will. Sprint hasn’t been in the best of situations since it acquired Nextel in 2005, and while this move may not be seen by everyone as definitively negative, it certainly is questionable. The flagging carrier sold off “nearly all” (around 3,300) of its wireless communication towers to TowerCo for some $670 million in cash. According to Sprint Nextel’s Bob Azzi, the move to lease rather than own these network facilities will enable it to “better focus on its core business of providing communications services to consumers, businesses and government customers.” He continued by noting that the transaction “provides Sprint Nextel with additional liquidity [for] greater flexibility in managing the company.” Whatever you say, sir.

Dell offers inexplicable Xbox 360 Elite bundle with certain XPS M1730 purchases

July 21st, 2008 by

There’s just one problem with this, the way we see it: most folks with $3000 earmarked for a gaming laptop probably already own an Xbox 360. Just a thought. Other than that we see little to dislike about this little promotion. Dell is offering up its top-of-the-line XPS M1730 system with an Xbox 360 Elite bundle tossed in for good measure. The bundle includes, a pair of faceplates, two game and of course the Xbox itself, and while it’s not exactly “free” — you’re looking at a couple hundred dollar premium over a similarly specced M1730 — it’s still a savings of over $300, and should be eBayable, if nothing else. Offer expires July 24th.

[Thanks, Cezar]

Is the BlackBerry KickStart getting a $50 price tag on T-Mobile?

July 3rd, 2008 by

Filed under:

We could tell by looking that RIM wouldn’t think of charging too many hundies for its still unannounced BlackBerry KickStart, but $49.99? CrackBerry has it that said flip phone will be selling at T-Mobile for a penny under $50 on a two-year contract, which certainly seems smart given the competition. ‘Course, we’ve nothing to substantiate this with just yet, but take one more look at that chubby side and tell us this thing deserves a triple digit price tag. That’s right, you can’t.

Wal-Mart throws in $100 gift card with Blu-ray player purchase

June 3rd, 2008 by

Given that $100 at Wal-mart is essentially as good as cash, we can only imagine how titillating this offer may seem for Blu-ray holdouts. Announced today, the mega-retailer will be offering a $100 gift card with the purchase of any Blu-ray player from June 8th through 14th — and yes, Sony’s PlayStation 3 is included. In case this wasn’t enough to maybe-possibly get the general public to actually pay attention to the format, Wally World will also sell “select” BD titles for $15 starting on the 8th. Since the format war ended earlier this year, we’ve seen report after report proclaiming that Blu-ray adoption just wasn’t taking off here in America, but with a theoretical net price now close to $200 (albeit for a few days only), we can certainly see the masses taking notice at long last.

Circuit City looks for a suitor, Blockbuster likely to be it

May 11th, 2008 by

Oddly enough, the far-fetched proposal is apt to be accepted. Circuit City has reportedly solicited the services of Goldman Sachs to help “negotiate a deal,” which will essentially put the troubled electronics retailer in the hands of someone else. As it stands, Blockbuster looks to be the most interested in picking up the pieces, with billionaire Carl Icahn (Blockbuster’s largest shareholder) agreeing to finance the get-together. Of course, it looks as if Blockbuster may be the only outfit interested. Not like that’s any surprise, however, as Best Buy itself is having to look to Europe to boost revenues with US consumer spending off from where it once was. The real question here is whether a Circuit City-Blockbuster combo would be the perfect concoction to turn things around for both flagging firms, or will we find that two sinking ships actually do go down faster when anchored to one another?

Xbox 360 HD DVD drives going for €9.99 in Ireland

May 6th, 2008 by

And you thought $49.99 was cheap. Word on the street has it that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on, which has been seen as slightly less valuable since Toshiba pulled the plug on the once mighty red format, has stooped to €9.99 across the pond. For those not savvy on the absurd devaluation of the US dollar, we’re talking $15.47 — and that’s with a Media Center remote bundled in, too. We’re totally straight-faced when we say that’s actually not a half bad deal if you’re a fan of the media already out there, but the parsimonious among us are definitely waiting for these to come bundled with our favorite cereals before pulling the trigger.

[Thanks, Conor]

Nyko’s rumbling Zero Wireless PS3 controller goes on sale

March 8th, 2008 by

Over a year (yeah, really) after this thing was originally announced, Nyko has finally slid the final piece in place in order to offer up the rumbling, bumbling Zero Wireless PS3 controller to end users. Granted, the version hitting shelves as we speak does include rumble, but since you’ve waited this long, you’re probably better off getting the real deal when it lands in April — for $5 less. Still, those who actually prefer 3rd party kit can look forward to being $59.99 poorer and receiving 25 hours of play on a full charge, LED-backlit buttons, “heat-dissipating aluminum panels (saywha?),” and your choice of black, white or silver.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 add-on to hit $49.99?

February 23rd, 2008 by

Truthfully, we reckon this moment is inevitable. With HD DVD hung out to dry by everyone and their long lost cousin, it’s simply a matter of time before players are being traded for rides on the carousel. Nevertheless, reports are already circulating that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 add-on drive could sink to $49.99 in the not-too-distant future, which may actually make it worth grabbing for the very respectable library of HD DVD titles already out there. Whatever you do, don’t pay full price for this thing.

[Thanks, Steve]

Palm tries to make a right with two wrongs

February 21st, 2008 by

Filed under:

Sure, it’s fun to carry around three, four, or even five devices at a time — and now thanks to a new promotion from Palm, you can quickly up the number of gadgets hanging from your utility belt by two. Currently, if you purchase the PDA / smartphone-maker’s $299 Palm TX, they’ll throw in a $99 Zire Z22 for free. We’re guessing those storage crates full of unsold product are probably starting to crowd Ed Colligan’s basement.

Optimus Maximus sold on eBay at terrifically inflated cost

February 11th, 2008 by

Filed under:

You may remember seeing an eBay auction for a NIB Optimus Maximus keyboard a few weeks ago on Engadget. As you can imagine, the news generated a lot of excitement — particularly from the folks at eBay, who decided it would be a sweet item to feature on their homepage. Thus the auction was ended quickly and relisted in accordance with special rules and regulations, and now some poor, poor soul (or wealthy, as it were) is the proud owner of an auctioned Optimus Maximus. Hey, it only cost $2,750… or just a little bit less than double the list price ($1564.72). Oh you crazy eBayers.

Lenovo’s holiday sale musters 25%-off ThinkPads

December 8th, 2007 by

Filed under:

We’re not sure why Lenovo is feeling so particularly jolly this holiday season, but we’re certainly not complaining. The company just slashed prices on its ThinkPad R, T and X series laptops, and its ThinkCentre A desktops. All models have received a 25% price cut, except for the R series with a still-lovable 22%. Yeah, you know the person on your list with everything? We bet they don’t have seven ThinkPads courtesy of their new favorite nephew.

Xbox 360 HD DVD player stoops to $129

December 4th, 2007 by

Not even six months after the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive fell to an oh-so-tempting $179, the unit has now reached an even lower low. That’s right kids, the attachment has just plummeted to a juicy $129, which would honestly sound a whole lot sweeter if not for that sub-$100 HD DVD fiasco still lingering in our heads. Nevertheless, we’ve already noticed the player’s new price tag over at Amazon and Toys R Us, but feel free to point out any other price slashings in comments below.

Samsung’s Q1 UMPC down to $580

November 14th, 2007 by

We aren’t generally ones to pass along gadget deals, but every so often an opportunity pops up that just seems too interesting to ignore. Merely 1.5 years after the highly-anticipated Q1 hit shelves for $1,100, the UMPC is available now (in refurbished fashion) for nearly half of that. Granted, you won’t be buying Sammy’s latest and greatest Q1, but maybe that inexplicably short battery life won’t bother you so much when you’re only shelling out $579.99. So, now that this thing has reached new lows (in price, that is), will you finally buy in, or will you try and squeeze one more year out that Newton?

[Thanks, Ben]

UGOBE’s Pleo enters production, software updates already promised

November 6th, 2007 by

Filed under:

With just weeks to go until Americans everywhere lose their minds in the holiday shopping rush, UGOBE is announcing that its long (long) awaited Pleo is finally hitting the production line. Furthermore, the company insists that those who pre-ordered the dinobot directly from UGOBE will receive a 30-day shipment notification “before Thanksgiving,” and those who placed their order with “any US retailer” will have their new toy before December 25th. In case that’s not enough to win back your heart, you can also look forward to a revamped website next month that will allow owners to download a “surprise mode” for their creature. Speaking of downloads, those wondering if this thing really will be able to “learn and develop a unique personality based on how it is raised” can anticipate “free software updates” aimed at enabling that feature (and possibly others) sometime next year. Hang tight kiddos, Pleos are being hatched as we speak.
