Samsung withdraws bid for SanDisk, hurts with words

October 21st, 2008 by

Filed under:

Citing SanDisk’s “rapidly declining prospects,” Samsung has withdrawn its hostile takover bid. In a letter just released by Vice Chairman and CEO Lee Yoon-woo, Samsung writes, “After nearly six months of efforts to pursue a transaction with no meaningful progress, we are withdrawing our proposal to acquire SanDisk.” The letter then turn a shade more nasty with this:

“Your surprise announcements of a quarter billion dollar operating loss, a hurried renegotiation of your relationship with Toshiba and major job losses across your organisation all point to a considerable increase in your risk profile and a material deterioration in value, both on a stand-alone basis as well as to Samsung.”

Analysts will remind you that the move does not mean that Samsung has abandoned its quest for SanDisk entirely. However, further action in the current economic climate seems unlikely give the Korean governments warning against major overseas mergers and acquisitions. Besides, just who is SanDisk? Can it really be trusted after being seen palling around with slotMusic?

Update: SanDisk just responded by blaming Samsung for the breakdown in negotiations while questioning its intentions. SanDisk then pivoted abruptly on heel and pretended to freshen-up its makeup while sneaking a wanton look back at Samsung in the reflection of its shareholder discontent. At least that’s our read on the matter.

SanDisk inks $1 billion deal with Toshiba, Samsung still eyeing company

October 20th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Toshiba and SanDisk have been in a number of joint ventures for some time now, but it looks like the two companies are now starting what could be a more drawn out break-up process, with SanDisk announcing today that it’s selling 30% of its manufacturing capacity outright to Toshiba in a $1 billion deal. For the time being at least, the two will remain 50/50 partners in the remaining 70% of the companies’ joint factories, though Toshiba will apparently get 65% of the production capacity at those factories. As MarketWatch points out, this latest move comes just a month after SanDisk rejected a $6 billion buyout offer from Samsung, and some analysts are now speculating that Toshiba’s deal will only make the company a more attractive target for Samsung. Nothing is expected to get wrapped up before August of 2009, however, which is when Samsung’s current royalty arrangement with SanDisk is due to expire.

SanDisk’s slotMusic albums and $20 Player now ready to be ignored

October 14th, 2008 by

Filed under:

When you’re digging a hole for yourself, you might as well keep digging in hopes of emerging from the other side. Today SanDisk unearthed its Sansa slotMusic Player — specially designed for those ill-fated slotMusic microSD cards pre-loaded with DRM-free music from “dozens of popular artists” (a bit over 3 dozen to be exact) at $15 a pop. It’ll also play your self-loaded music on microSD cards (currently maxing out at 16GB) just as long as it’s loaded in either MP3 and unprotected WMA formats. The tiny, display-less, 2.8 x 1.4 x 1.4-inch (that can’t be right, but that’s what the press release says) player sells for $20 (or $35 for artist branding and 1GB slotMusic card album) and is available immediately along side a smattering of accessories from US shops like Best Buy and fittingly, Wal-Mart. Headed to Europe and other global destinations sometime in 2009 assuming the whole format isn’t scrapped after disappointing holiday sales are tallied.

Sansa Fuze updated to support Ogg and FLAC

October 4th, 2008 by

Filed under:

SanDisk just released a firmware update for the Sansa Fuze — pretty minor, except it adds in support for FLAC and Ogg, which should make fans of jam bands and lossless music encoding extremely happy. Nothing much else of note here apart from some UI tweaks and big fixes, but Fuze owners will be appreciative, we’re sure.

Kingston following Intel into the SSD game

October 3rd, 2008 by

Filed under:

Kingston has announced it’s teaming up with Intel — new to the SSD market itself — to market flash memory-based drives for laptops and servers. This is a bold move for Kingston, which is usually known to stick to mature markets; clearly, the company sees the technology’s potential. The effort “almost flies in the face of the usual Kingston model,” said spokesman Dave Leong. “We are large and in charge!” (OK, so we made that last part up.) This is all set to pop off in Q4 2008 — Samsung, you’ve been warned.

SanDisk fesses up to 16GB microSDHC and M2 memory cards

September 29th, 2008 by

Filed under:

What’s been keepin’ ya, SanDisk? We knew these little buggers were legit late last week, but for whatever reason, the outfit chose to keep its trap shut until today. Finally, SanDisk has confessed in painful detail that its 16GB microSDHC and M2 cards are for real, marking the largest capacity available in both formats. Of note, even Sony doesn’t have a 16GB M2 card on the market, though it’s possible the firm is too busy dealing with all those other proprietary formats to mess with this one. At any rate, Best Buy Mobile and Verizon Wireless stores will be your go-to place for either one, though we’d be prepared to shell out $99.99 (16GB microSDHC) or $129.99 (16GB M2) when they land in November.

SanDisk’s 16GB microSDHC card slips into retail, T-Mobile’s G1

September 25th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Shhh, keep this on the down low: SanDisk’s 16GB microSDHC card is now available for purchase — the first to reach that capacity. At the moment, it’s only been spotted at a few on-line shops in the UK for round-about £45 with VAT (about $70 pre-tax in the US). Exactly what you need for your new T-Mobile G1. Hey Sandisk, you want to chime in and make this official or what?

SanDisk, major labels announce slotMusic preloaded microSD cards

September 21st, 2008 by

We’re not sure why the music industry thinks consumers want to buy even more physical media, but it can’t seem to stop pumping out plastic in a futile attempt to stay relevant — this time it’s an initiative called slotMusic, announced today in partnership with SanDisk and several major retailers. The 1GB slotMusic microSD cards are preloaded with DRM-free 320kbps MP3s, and are aimed primarily at mobile phones — the idea is that you’ll be able to buy music and listen to it without having to sideload it onto your device using your computer at home. Sure, we can see the appeal of that, but when we half-facetiously asked SanDisk’s reps if they expected us to carry around a stack of individual microSD albums, they didn’t laugh when they said yes, and even told us that slotMusic media binders would be available at launch — no, they weren’t kidding. We’re not sure anyone’s going to be sold on going back to lugging around physical media with the iTunes and Zune WiFi stores out there, but it sounds like we’ll be seeing quite a push for this from retailers and the labels — and artists are apparently enthusiastic about using the full 1GB of space to include content beyond basic liner notes and cover art. We’ll see when these launch around the holidays — if we had to guess, we’d say this is just Ringles and CDVU+ part III.

Samsung makes a hostile bid for SanDisk

September 16th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’d heard rumors Samsung was wooing SanDisk, but it looks like the four-month courtship is over — Samsung just announced that in reponse to SanDisk’s “unrealistic expectations” during negotiations, it’s going hostile and will offer $26/share for the company. That’s bound to cause some waves in the storage industry, especially since Toshiba and Seagate were also rumored to be interested in SanDisk. We’ll see what happens — things always get a little crazy when there’s nearly six billion dollars in cash on the table.

[Thanks, Marshall84]

August 27th, 2008 by

Filed under:

SanDisk’s pushed both Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo and regular SD cards to 30MB/s transfer rates before, and now it’s SDHC’s turn with the new Extreme III series. Yep, it’s a really fast memory card for DSLRs, and it’ll cost you: 4GB will be $65, 8GB $110 and 16GB will set you back whopping $180 when these hit in October.

Analyst sees Micron joint venture, SanDisk as possible targets for Seagate

June 24th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Seagate has already made its intentions about jumping into the SSD game pretty clear, and one analyst now says he sees two clear options at the company’s disposal if it wants to seriously make a go of it, each of which involve Seagate shelling out a good chunk of cash. According to Lazard’s Daniel Amir, one option would be to buy out Intel’s 49% stake in the IM Flash Technologies joint venture it has with Micron, which would reportedly cost anywhere from $1 to $2 billion (not to mention put Seagate on the outs with Intel). More likely than that, Amir says, would be an acquisition of or partnership with SanDisk, which he says would be an ideal fit given Seagate’s expertise on the enterprise side and SanDisk’s retail knowhow. Amir doesn’t put a price tag on that option though, but you can be sure it wouldn’t be cheap.

SanDisk and Toshiba join efforts to build “3D” flash

June 18th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We first heard about Toshiba’s plan to increase NAND flash capacities by building “3D” memory chips with “pillars” of stacked cells in January of 2007, but it looks like the effort is getting revived — Tosh and SanDisk have entered into an agreement to jointly develop and cross-license 3D memory tech. SanDisk was once rumored to be developing write-once 3D flash chips, so both companies have experience building the stuff, but it sounds like it’ll take another three or four years for the partnership to produce actual products, as high-yield production is still difficult.

SanDisk kills TakeTV dead

June 6th, 2008 by

Here’s a sure sign of unpopularity: SanDisk stopped selling its TakeTV device, and shut down TakeTV’s Fanfare content portal, on May 15th… and nobody noticed. Originally inspiring fond sentiments with its sneakernet approach to getting videos from your computer to your PC, SanDisk’s TakeTV just never got much traction. Faced with competition from the likes of Microsoft and Apple — not to mention the oodles of networked devices that offer up more content and more convenience which have been cropping up recently — we’d be surprised if TakeTV sold enough units to fill a briefcase. Anybody out there have any fond memory’s of TakeTV’s short stint?

SanDisk launches pSSD drives for low-cost PC sector

June 2nd, 2008 by

SanDisk is all about adding those prefixes to solid state discs, and not quite a year after we were forced to learn what uSSD really meant, the same firm is now shoving pSSD into our dictionary. Launched at Computex, these new parallel ATA solid-state drives are designed for use in the booming low-cost laptop sector, and will be available in 4/8/16GB sizes. They’ll also boast a streaming read speed of 39MB/sec and a streaming write performance of 17MB/sec. According to SanDisk, the modules will be built using the outfit’s Multi-Level Cell (MLC) and Single-Level Cell (SLC) flash memory at fabrication plants in Yokkaichi, Japan, and while dollars and / or yen weren’t talked about, you can get set to grab your own when they land in August.

SanDisk’s 8GB Extreme III Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo clocks 30MBps

May 29th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Beating Sony to the punch is SanDisk’s new 8GB Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo card. The “Extreme III Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo” touts the most convoluted name in portable flash storage as well as 3x the performance — 30MBps read and write — of standard Memory Stick Pro Duo cards. As such, they are perfect for high performance DSLRs and camcorders. Available worldwide in June for $150.

SanDisk ultra cell phone memoryThere’s not much new to see in SanDisk’s new Mobile Ultra line of memory cards other than some branding that’s sure to confuse people at their local electronics shop, but we’ll indulge the idea anyway. The cards come with USB adapters to make transfers to PC easier and are shipping in microSDHC and Memory Stick Micro (M2) flavors in 2, 4, and 8GB varieties. Prices range from $34.99 to $129.99 depending on the card type and capacity.

How would you change SanDisk’s Sansa Fuze?

May 16th, 2008 by

Just like that obscure Burt Bacharach album, some DAPs just need a little time to grow on you. Now that SanDisk’s comparatively inexpensive Sansa Fuze has been out and about for a couple of months, we’re imploring you dear readers to cast out your opinions on the minuscule device. Are you satisfied with the interface? Have you been disappointed by the sound quality? Was this thing just one feature away from being perfect? ‘Tis a shame SanDisk didn’t phone you up before mashing the green button and sending these on their way, but here’s your shot to tell all who will listen what could be done better in revision two.

SanDisk rolls out RSA-packin’ Cruzer Enterprise flash drives

April 7th, 2008 by

Filed under:

It looks like anyone that makes regular use of an RSA key for one reason or another could soon have a new favorite USB flash drive, with SanDisk announcing the availability of so-called “two-for-one” Cruzer Enterprise drives, which provide both secure date storage and RSA SecurID software tokens for two-factor authentication (eliminating the need for a separate hardware authenticator). The drive is also apparently no slouch when it comes to the usual storage security measures, with it boasting 256-bit AES encryption, and a setup process that requires users to create complex passwords before they’re able to make use of the drive. No word on pricing just yet, but you’ll apparently be able to get the drive in your choice of 1, 2, 4, or 8GB varieties, with each boasting a respectable read speed of 24MB per second and a write speed of 20MB per second.

SanDisk Sansa Fuze hands-on

March 23rd, 2008 by

So we’ve had a SanDisk Sansa Fuze hanging around the office for a few days and already we can tell you that fans of the Sansa line will find it a welcome addition to the line. The interface feels pretty snappy and it’s got all the geeky things you’re after (FM radio, microSDHC, 1.9-inch display) at a price $70 cheaper than the nano at the 8GB level. Plus, we know it sounds old school, but we’re really into the tactile scroll / click wheel, and the Fuze has the best one we’ve used in a long time. Check out the photos below, including a couple side by sides with a you-know-what.
