ASUS AiGuru SV1 Skype videophone hands-on

September 18th, 2008 by

Sure, it’s frumpy, overpriced and rather pointless for anyone who owns a computer with a webcam and knows how to use it, but ASUS and Skype are after the grandma / grandpa / computerphobic set with this here AiGuru SV1 videophone, and aren’t doing horrible job of it. The screen is great, the icons are ginormous, and operation couldn’t be much simpler. Unfortunately, the video quality is pretty inexcusable for a dedicated box like this: the VGA image is crap, and the framerate is totally weak — it could’ve been a problem with the network we were on, but it looked like a straight-up wired router to us. What gives, ASUS?

ASUS and Skype launch dedicated AiGuru SV1 videophone

September 18th, 2008 by

Following in the dubious footsteps of Creative, ASUS just announced a dedicated videophone all its own. The AiGuru SV1 followup to the voice-only S1, enables virtually unlimited video calls without a computer — a world’s first to get a big thumbs-up from Skype. The SV1 packs an 800 x 600 pixel 7-inch LCD, integrated speaker and mic (or jacks for your own), a VGA-quality webcam, and connects to the Internets over 802.11b/g WiFi or Ethernet. It’ll even run off battery for up to 20-minutes if absolutely necessary. Available for pre-order in Europe and North America today for a netbook-priced, $300 beans — ships in October.

Hulger’s PAPPA*PHONE luxury Skype handset could turn your life around

September 14th, 2008 by

Filed under:

You’re such a sleaze on Skype, with that janky headset you bought five years ago to play Counter-Strike making indentations in your unwashed hair. You’re not impressing anyone, especially not your four cats. What you need is the Hulger PAPPA*PHONE, a hand crafted Skype handset forged from walnut, brass and pure classiness. Just $300, and we all know you spent that much of your mom’s money last month on Cheetos alone. You’re good for it.

3 launches Skypephone S2

August 20th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Hold up just a second, this is more than your average WiFi-powered Skype handset for yakking it up while you’re wandering around the abode in your skivvies. In fact, it’s none other than the follow-on to 3’s Skypephone of last year — the aptly-named Skypephone S2 — offering HSDPA data, a 3.2 megapixel camera, 50MB of memory with a microSD slot for plenty more, and pretty much all the Skype support you can handle (hence the name, we suppose). Skype-to-Skype calls are completely free from the phone, and the Skype service can be kept active by adding £10 (about $19) monthly on a pay-as-you-go arrangement; otherwise, the phone can be had for as little as zilch if you sign up for a monthly plan. It’ll work as a broadband dongle, too, which we think officially makes this thing oodles more useful than even the most capable of WiFi phones, skivvies or otherwise.

Sony’s PSP Skype headset finally arrives Stateside

May 8th, 2008 by

If you’ve got a PSP-2000 and a hankering for some VoIP on the run, Sony has finally brought its Skype-friendly PSP headset to US retail. Unfortunately, it won’t work with those original fatty PSPs, and at $30 you’ve gotta ask yourself how much you’ll really be using it for — the original price was set at $20. That said, it’s undoubtedly the easiest way to get up and running with Skype and in-game voice chat on the PSP, since it used to require two separate accessories to pull it off. Oh, and if you’re Skype curious, be sure to check out the how-to guide over at PSP Fanboy.

iPhone gets VoIP and chat options thanks to Fring

April 15th, 2008 by

Filed under:

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/iPhone_gets_VoIP_and_chat_options_thanks_to_Fring’; Sure, the iPhone is cool looking, works out a lot, and is really good at math… but it can’t do VoIP, can it? Well, yes it can — and you can, thanks to a company called Fring and a piece of ingenious software (for jailbreakers only). Using the native app, it’s now possible to place and receive calls via your WiFi connection, thus making AT&T CEOs cry like little babies. Besides doing Skype and the like, the app also lets you connect for chats via MSN Messenger, ICQ, GTalk, SIP, Twitter, AIM, and Yahoo!, which should make this an attractive package even if you don’t want to harness the raw power of IP telephony. You can get the application for free by loading up Installer with the company’s repo. Check the video after the break to see the magic happen.

Sony mylo 2 firmware version 1.100 adds WMV and SHOUTcast support

April 12th, 2008 by

Sony mylo 2

Sony’s do-everything-except-for-make-calls mylo has been updated to firmware version 1.100, and is now available at Sony’s support site as a 61MB download. Because you ran out of things to do with your mylo about, say, ten minutes after unboxing it, rejoice — the update adds WMV file support, SHOUTcast widget support (the widget is a separate download), a “Game” item on the HOME menu for easier access to all those games you downloaded to the COM-2 unit, and, of course, improved “system stability”.

FCC turns down Skype’s open access petition

April 2nd, 2008 by

Filed under:

Carriers have been making some strong strides in the direction of open access, and the recent 700MHz auction was a particular win for consumers, but the FCC isn’t quite ready to go whole hog here. The commission has turned down Skype’s request that the FCC expand 1968’s Carterphone landline ruling to apply to the mobile industry, which would mean that operators would be required to let any device run on their network as long as it doesn’t do damage. If you’ll hear Verizon or AT&T tell it, that’s what they’re doing already, but Skype obviously wants some protection for its bandwidth-hogging, carrier revenue-threatening P2P VoIP app, and the FCC isn’t quite ready to fork it over.

Sony delays Skype PSP and microphone launch, indefinitely

January 23rd, 2008 by

var digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/playstation/Sony_delays_Skype_PSP_and_microphone_launch_indefinitely’; Weird. After making such a fuss, Sony Japan just delayed Skype on PSP services in Japan. A move with a definite knock-on effect for the rest of world. The cause of which seems to be Sony’s two microphone products — the single pack PSPJ-15010 and twin pack PSPJ-15011 — which “did not meet the Skype specifications” and thus failed the certification process. Something you think Sony would have known well before the eve of the scheduled January 24th launch. We’ll let you know when a new date is announced.

Native Skype coming to Apple TV?

January 18th, 2008 by

The Apple TV isn’t just getting Cupertino’s updates, apparently. According to aficionados of the little silver box, a Canadian teen who has hacked his way through a wireless keyboard workaround and a GPS plugin used for an in-car Apple TV setup, is developing a native Skype client for device. Brandon Holland, the hacker in question, says that the plugin will take advantage of the Skype API, and will allow a user to make calls and send text messages using a standard USB headset or USB phone. Text will be entered via the remote, or so he says. Right now there’s no date for the release, but we suspect you’ll be hearing about it before long… so stay tuned.

Sony’s CES 2008 booth tour

January 8th, 2008 by

Sony invites you to “see it all” at their booth in the Central Hall, but you’re hard-pressed to actually do so due to both sheer square footage and the immense volume of bodies jostling each other in between stations. The consumer electronics giant’s got no shortage of bedazzling gadgetry out on the floor here, and we braved the teeming hordes to collate the following eye candy for you.

Sony “planning” to bring Skype to PSP

January 5th, 2008 by

We won’t call it “official” just yet, but it looks all but certain that Sony will indeed bring Skype to its famed PlayStation Portable. According to Reuters, Sony is “planning to add an internet phone function” (that’d be Skype) to its PSP in order to “stir up demand,” which wouldn’t be a half bad idea considering how the DS seems to be hogging the limelight of late. Purportedly, the software could become available “as early as this month,” and while Sony spokesman Satoshi Fukuoka declined to comment on the rumblings, he did note that the company was “studying ways to add value to the PSP.” Are you thinking what we’re thinking?

Skype coming to Sony’s PSP?

January 2nd, 2008 by

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/playstation/Skype_officially_comming_to_Sony_s_PSP’; Guess what babies? All your wildest dreams are about to come true (provided they don’t get too wild). That’s right, according to new PR for Sony’s upcoming CES showing, Skype is apparently coming to the PSP. Details are scarce at the moment (i.e., nonexistent), but the company makes clear mention of a Skype client for the handheld game system on its CES 2008 promo site, which is pretty official — though we’re gonna hold our breath a little till we see a press release. Obviously, we’ll be hearing a lot more about this when the big show kicks off this month, but until then at least we can all sleep a little better at night knowing the PSP is about to get yet another succulent function. Just hit the read link and click on the controller icon, all you need to know is listed in the sidebar.

Update: Thanks to some sleuthing by the crew over at UberGizmo, a perverse and exciting little easter egg has been found in the PSP promo video which accompanies this new info. For literally one frame, Sony all but confirms Skype on the handheld with a nearly-subliminal image that reads “Make calls with Skype.” Check the image after the break and see for yourself.

[Thanks, Jorge H]

BenQ unveils the Joybook Q41 SideShow-equipped laptop

December 21st, 2007 by

Filed under:

There’s not a big pack of SideShow laptops out there, but BenQ’s leapt to the front with the 14.1-inch Joybook Q41, which adds Skype support to Microsoft’s under-utilized auxiliary display tech. In addtion to the usual RSS, email, and media controls, you can make and receive Skype calls from the 2.5-inch SideShow screen without having to open and fully boot the machine, which runs an unspecified Core 2 Duo. No word on pricing or availability, but honestly — isn’t it time we saw way more SideShow-equipped machines?

Skype and Logitech introduce 30fps VGA High Quality Video

October 30th, 2007 by

Filed under:

Skype users, rejoice: eBay’s VoIP giant has just given video calling a major kick in the pants by teaming up with Logitech to create a platform capable of displaying your ugly mug in full VGA glory at 30fps without the inelegant hack. With the release of version 3.6 for Windows (sorry Mac users, but you have your Leopards to play with), Skype now supports High Quality Video when employing one of three Logitech webcams already on the market — the QuickCams Pro 9000, Pro for Notebooks, and Orbit AF — along with a dual core-powered machine. Of course, performance is highly dependent on your internet connection as well; the HQV spec calls for a minimum of 384kbps, and both parties will probably require more than that if they want to avoid throttled frame rates. Updated software (v. 11.5) already being rolled out will teach supported QuickCams their new trick, bringing with it the all the facial imperfections and embarrassing quirks that are likely to remind us why video calling has never really caught on in the first place.

3 Skypephone is free in the UK

October 29th, 2007 by

Right on schedule, you’re looking at the just announced co-branded Skype phone: the 3 Skypephone. Sure, mobile Skype clients are already in worldwide use. This, however, marks the first time a carrier has fully embraced Skype which traditionally has been seen as a threat to carrier tariff schemes. Under 3’s plan, Skype VoIP calls and IMs are free to any other Skype user just as long as you’re under contract or top up your pay as your go account with at least £10 (about $21) each month. The £49 (about $101) 3G phone with 2 megapixel camera and microSD slot will be available in the UK on Friday; Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Italy, Ireland, Macau and Sweden sometime later in the year. Wanna see it in a video? Sure you do, locked-and-loaded right after the break.

3Skypephone launching November 2nd?

October 26th, 2007 by

Filed under:

We aren’t etching this in stone just yet, but we’ve seen numerous reports claiming that the recent partnership between 3 and Skype will soon lead to an actual piece of hardware. Reportedly, the 3Skypephone will be available on October 29th “for a pre-launch,” and will be officially official on November 2nd. Specs wise, it should feature free calls to other Skype users / 3Skypephone owners, a two-megapixel camera, video capturing and an MP3 player. Interested consumers can supposedly choose from three different colors, and it should be available on the “£12 ($25) Mix and Match 100 tariff which offers 100 minutes or texts or any mix of the two.” Ah well, at least we’ve but a few days left to find out for sure, eh?
