Sony’s 16.4-inch VAIO FW laptop gets previewed

July 28th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Maybe it’s the 16.4-inch panel, or maybe it’s the built-in Blu-ray drive. Whatever it is, Sony’s VAIO FW has garnered quite a bit of attention. Just a fortnight after getting (extra) official, this nimble monster made its way into the loving arms of NotebookReview, where critics couldn’t resist giving us a sneak peek before penning the fleshed-out review. We’ll just get it out there — initial impressions are really positive. Fit, finish and build quality were all deemed “excellent,” and the overall design was dubbed “beautiful.” Performance seemed to be above par during limited testing, though the screen is apt to be one of those love it or hate it ordeals. Check out the read link if for nothing more than a couple more shots.

RED delivers new rendering of Scarlet 3K camera

July 10th, 2008 by

Filed under:

From the word go, amateurs and professionals alike were hot for RED’s (relatively) minuscule Scarlet. After all, can you really go wrong with a 3K camera in one hand and a Dairy Queen dipped cone in the other? (No, no you cannot.) Nevertheless, those anxious to see more as the run-up to its early 2009 release continues can feast their eyes on an all new rendering. Oh, and if you’re the talkative type, tag the read link and join in the 8+ page discussion about that image you’re eyes are still fixated on above.

[Thanks, anonymous]

First spy shot of Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo surfaces

June 23rd, 2008 by

Filed under:

It’s not often that we get to cover spy shots here at Engadget, but we’re as giddy as school children about this one. The SpaceShipTwo design was officially rolled out in January, and if Flightglobal is to be believed, that image above is the first capture of the craft. Reportedly, the shot was taken in Mojave, California where the vehicle is being constructed at Scaled Composites. One step closer to the next big leap for mankind? Sure looks like it.

Filed under:

Look out, Alienware — your fancy new Area-51 ALX has a carnivore hot on its trail. The Acer Aspire Predator, which was officially unveiled yesterday, has already found its way into the loving arms of Bit-Tech. Over there, folks were able to spend a good bit of time with the rig, snap a smattering of photos and dish out some initial impressions. There’s some pretty interesting tidbits to be had (for example, every single part possesses its own bar code, the motherboard is a customized MSI nForce 780i SLI, etc.), so be sure and tap the read link to get their view on how this beast will likely shake out.

[Thanks, Daren]

John Mayer secures a BlackBerry Bold, makes world envious

May 16th, 2008 by

Filed under:

See how easy it is everyone? All that’s required to snag a BlackBerry Bold well before its public release is to become a Grammy award-winning artist, sell out shows worldwide, date a smattering of superstars and convince Fender to create and sell your own branded guitar. While you’re off working on step one, John Mayer is living it up with his brand new BlackBerry Bold. Granted, he can’t claim to be the very first with said handset, but it’s likely the first completely legitimate edition let loose. Of course, once you’ve landed the Curve and MacBook Air before everyone else on the planet, snagging a Bold is just child’s play.

Live shots of Sony Ericsson’s Paris surface, Mr. Blur mysteriously absent

May 7th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Enough of these overly pixelated, totally fuzzed-out captures of something supposed to Sony Ericsson’s Paris — we’re looking at the real deal now. This definitely sexy slider has somehow fell in front of someone without hands a-shakin’, and a smattering of distinct images are waiting just below in the read link. If you just like to be teased, the snapshots show a 5.0-megapixel camera and confirm that the keypad touts a two-character-per-button layout similar to the P1 — but really, there’s nothing like seeing it for yourself.

[Thanks, Kevin]

Walt checks out ThinkPad X300, also fits in manila folder

February 13th, 2008 by

Filed under:

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/tech_news/Surprise_Surprise_Thinkpad_X300_also_fits_in_a_Manila_Folder’; Well, would you look at that. The image we’re certain your eyes are fixated on above is indeed the first look at Lenovo’s forthcoming X300 ultraportable, and it’s being provided courtesy of Walt Mossberg. ‘Course, if we were betting souls, we’d guess that nifty office envelope won’t be bundled in, but hey, crazier things have happened. As if a photo wasn’t enough, Walt also clued us in on a few more specs, namely the inclusion of a removable battery, three USB ports, WiFi, an integrated Ethernet jack and optional GPS / WWAN to boot. Heck, users will even be able to order this 3.12-pound critter with Windows XP if they so choose. You getting all this, Apple?

Windows Mobile 6.1 gets played with, shown off

February 2nd, 2008 by

Filed under:

Not like Windows Mobile 6.1 is an elaborate mystery or anything — heck, we even know all about the improvements it’s slated to bring — but there’s nothing like a bucketful of screenshots surrounded by machine translated opinions to really revive that enthusiasm. Sure enough, the folks over at PocketPT were able get ahold of the software and show off just how it handled webpage zooming, threaded SMS conversations and Office 2007 documents. Still not convinced? Go on and hit the read link — you skeptic, you.

Images of Pentax’s K200D DSLR surface?

December 29th, 2007 by

Filed under:

Just over a month ago, we got word that Pentax could be readying a pair of new DSLRs, and now it seems that we’ve been blessed with a plethora of shots of the K200D. ‘Course, we suppose they could be doctored, but we just don’t believe someone would spend that much time working up Pentax fakes, ya know? Regardless, feel free to hit the read link and check out what’s probably the outfit’s next shooter — or some mighty fine ’shops, worst case scenario.

Trio of new ATI Radeon HD cards get leaked, pictured

December 22nd, 2007 by

Filed under:

AMD removed any lingering secrecy when it gave the official word to expect new kit based on the R680, RV620 and RV635, but now we’re seeing a trio of actual products (all PCIe 2.0) that are purported to be built around the aforementioned cores. According to MadBoxPC, the ATI Radeon 3450 HD will be based on the RV620, utilize 55-nanometer fabrication technology and will feature a 525MHz core clock, 400MHz memory clock (800MHz DDR), 256MB of DDR2 RAM and VGA / Display Port outputs. Moving on up, we’ve got the Radeon 3470 HD, which is based on the same core but gets clocked a hair faster and ditches Display Port for DVI. Finishing things off is the RV635-based Radeon 3650 HD, which will come in a 800MHz XT flavor and a 600MHz Pro iteration along with 256MB - 512MB of GDDR3 RAM. The trifecta is reportedly going to ship sometime next month, and they’ll cost you just $50, $60 and $100, respectively.

Nokia’s N96 spotted in the wild?

December 20th, 2007 by

Filed under:

That, friends, is an N96. Or, at least we’re led to believe so. Judging by five mysterious images that surfaced over at Mobile-Review, it appears that Nokia’s N96 (which looks like a jazzed-up version of the N81, actually) has leaked out, and while no specifications are available, it looks as if this thing is packing a 5-megapixel camera (with the obligatory Carl Zeiss lens), a dual LED flash and a sexy black motif. Check out one more look after the jump.

Motorola’s A1600 MING 2 surfaces

December 13th, 2007 by

Filed under:

What’s that, you say? Reportedly, that picture you see above is the Motorola A1600, which could be the long-awaited successor to the A1200 MING. Granted, we’ve no proof to go along with it, but the design sure fits the mold. According to Chinese-based eNet, this bugger will sport quad-band GSM connectivity, a 3.2-megapixel camera (with autofocus), WiFi, assisted-GPS, a couple of built-in games, a “talking dictionary” and a Linux-based OS. Interestingly enough, that last tidbit certainly conflicts with other reports we’ve heard, but we suppose time will tell (look for a February launch) what system really ends up running the MING 2 show.

QNAP’s 4-bay TS-409 NAS box gets peeked early

December 13th, 2007 by

Filed under:

What do you get when you mix a TS-209 in with two extra drive bays and a new design? Why, the TS-409, of course! This not-yet-released NAS drive reportedly supports RAID 0/1/5 and JBOD, doubles as a UPnP media server and doesn’t require the user to bust out a screwdriver each time he / she wants to access or swap out a HDD. Beyond that, not much is known about QNAP’s forthcoming device, but feel free to hit the read link for an early look at (and within) what should be landing in the not-too-distant future.
