Sony Ericsson’s Idou stylus gets pictured, piques interests

March 12th, 2009 by

We’ve already investigated every single nook and crannie involved in Sony Ericsson’s 12 megapixel Idou, but here’s something we haven’t seen: an associated stylus. It’s difficult to tell at the moment if SE plans to toss this in with the Idou (or whatever it ends being called) like Nokia did when it threw in a guitar pick with the 5800 XpressMusic, but either way, you can consider our interest piqued. Not that we’re fans of using a stylus over our own digits, mind you, but we are fond of random, if not unnecessary accessories. Save the lecture, we realize that’s odd.

[Thanks, Jesper]

MWC day one: the Empire strikes back

February 16th, 2009 by

We know, there was an absolute flood of news from Mobile World Congress today, but day one in Spain has finally come to a close, and it looks like Microsoft is flexing all its muscle to try and lock up partners and rejoin the fight for mobile dominance. Seriously, this is Redmond’s show: we haven’t seen a new, non-prototype Android handset powered up yet, and that’s frankly astonishing and somewhat disappointing. What else did we learn?

Sony Ericsson Idou hands-on and video walkthrough

February 16th, 2009 by

Sony Ericsson launched its 12.1 megapixel Idou at Mobile World Congress yesterday evening, and while not a finished device, we checked it out anyway. The Idou will eventually roll with the Symbian Foundation’s OS, but the version we’re seeing here is somewhere in between. The resistive touchscreen (essentially the same as found on the XpressMusic 5800) is immense, glossy, and already brilliant. The transitions and sweeping gestures (check them in the vid) are really responsive and quick, with no real lag. We checked it against its nearest neighbor in the C905 and it is slim in comparison. Top notch stuff, we are anxiously waiting for more. Video and gallery follow.

Sony Ericsson Idou first eyes-on (Update: now with video!)

February 15th, 2009 by

Sony Ericsson is only teasing this one from behind glass — and for good reason, the Idou is far from completion — but we grabbed a few shots of the handset all the same. Let us tell, it’s pretty intimidating staring down a 12 megapixel camera on a phone, but we managed somehow.

Sony Ericsson W995 video hands-on

February 15th, 2009 by

So it’s not totally clear to us why you’d wait for this thing over a C905 that you could buy today, but once again, that’s the confusion behind Sony Ericsson’s Cyber-shot / Walkman branding that they’re claiming they hope to clear up going forward — it’s just that the W995 isn’t really a step in that direction, and we weren’t huge fans of the chicklet-sized nav keys up front. That being said, it seems like a fine phone overall — the display looks crisp and vivid, the interface was relatively snappy, and there’s little to complain about having an 8.1 megapixel autofocus cam at your disposal. Click on for a quick shot at the UI in action!

Sony Ericsson gets official with “Idou” 12 megapixel mobile

February 15th, 2009 by

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/gadgets/Sony_Ericsson_announces_crazy_12_megapixel_smartphone’; We didn’t doubt it for a second (okay, maybe one second), but Sony’s so-called Idou is for real. Though, we wouldn’t go memorizing that name or anything, ’cause SE has plans to change it to something more commercial before summer. At any rate, the touchscreen-heavy handset — which will run Symbian Foundation at launch — does indeed sport a 12.1 megapixel shooter (which was hinted at last November), which sort of makes the also-just-official Samsung Memoir seem a bit dated already. It’s funny too, as the only dozen megapixeler we were actually expecting at this show was from Samsung. We’re still waiting on the minutiae, but we do know that it will pack a 3.5-inch panel (640 x 320 resolution; no word on capacitive or resistive) and “full media consumption,” a phrase we’re still struggling to digest. More as we get it!

Sony Ericsson Idou revealed a little early

February 15th, 2009 by

We’re just getting into our seats for Sony Ericsson’s MWC press event, but it looks like the partnership’s newest Symbian offering has leaked a little early. Called the Idou, it sports a 16:9 touchscreen, a 12.1 megapixel camera with a xenon flash, and an official web site that doesn’t seem to be active yet. We’ll hopefully be finding out more in just minutes, we’ll let you know!

[Thanks, aleksandarkazi]

Sony Ericsson’s W995 Walkman slips out ahead of schedule

February 15th, 2009 by

Clearly, the flood gates have opened well before Sony Ericsson intended over in Barcelona, as the countdown is still on while we’re watching handset after handset leak out. Next up is the W995 Walkman (can someone say Hikaru?), a multimedia-centric slider which boasts an 8.1 megapixel camera, A-GPS, Google Maps, WiFi, DLNA certification, 118MB of built-in memory, an 8GB M2 card and a 2.6-inch QVGA scratch-resistant display. The mobile should ship in a trio of colors — Progressive Black, Cosmic Silver and Energetic Red — and the inbuilt kickstand should make airplane-based movie watching a touch easier on the neck. No word on a price or release, but SE should be remedying that at any moment.

Update: As you may have caught in our liveblog, the W995 is now very much official, and just as described in its not-quite-official form. SE did have a few small surprises up its sleeve, however, in the form Sony’s MediaGo software, which will let you share media with your PS3 over WiFi, and take advantage of Sony’s PlayNow services, including downloaded movies purchased on your PC. Hit up the gallery below for a closer look.

Sony Ericsson “Reese” flip QWERTY smartphone leaked?

February 15th, 2009 by

If the above picture is to be believed, Sony Ericsson’s looking to release a new swivel-based QWERTY called the “Reese” that boasts one-click access to “your favorite networking sites.” Details beyond this ad are pretty light, and we’re not ruling out the possibility that this might be a fan render (as SE aficionados are fond of). Furthermore, the original poster told forum members at Esato that this device “will not be announced soon,” which makes the appearance of an advertisement even more perplexing. Regardless, we’ll know one way or another soon, as the company is just about to start its MWC press conference… and we’ll be there live.

Sony Ericsson exec dismisses rumors of a schism

February 11th, 2009 by

Despite some nasty financial losses and a rumored smackdown of a PSP phone proposal, the Sony Ericsson joint venture is apparently as strong as ever. That’s what Senior Marketing Manager Richard Dorman is saying, denying any talks of a split. He also noted that both companies had been losing money in their respective handset division prior to the assimilation, and the partnership is “full steam ahead.” That’s great, now how about showing us some more Hikaru, hm?

Sony Ericsson’s W395 Walkman and C903 Cybershot bring more of the same

February 10th, 2009 by

In the run-up to Mobile World Congress we’ve been treated to a windfall of hot new phones and technologies. Then there’s Sony Ericsson’s W395 Walkman and C903 Cyber-shot. The W395 is a new Walkman slider with built-in stereo speakers meant for the “youth” market, a market that seemingly hates 3G or storage since the quad-band GSM/EDGE device ships with a measly 1GB memory card. It will, however, be affordable and feature a 2 megapixel camera when it ships in Q1. The C903 Cyber-shot slider already spotted around here a few times brings a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with sliding lens cover as we’ve seen — give the cover a slide and this cameraphone’s ready for duty. The camera features face detection and a Smile Shutter mode that automatically snaps the shutter when a happy face is detected. It also packs a 2.4-inch display, Memory Stick Micro (M2) expansion slot and, get this… it’ll even make phone calls. This worldphone rides quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE for 10 hours of talk or 400 hours of standby with UMTS/HSPA 900/2100 (or 850/1900/2100 in the C903a configuration) frequencies bringing the 3G sometime in Q2. Beautiful devices for what they are — guess we’re just spoiled by all the MWC goods expected in Barcelona from RIM, LG, Samsung, Toshiba, Acer, Android, Palm, Microsoft… you get the idea.

Sony Ericsson set to launch Hikaru at MWC?

February 9th, 2009 by

Sony Ericsson leaked another stellar looking phone today in the form of the slider pictured above, apparently codenamed Hikaru. As with all these early treats, specs are thin, but we do know if has an 8 megapixel camera, 2.6-inch screen, WiFi, AGPS, some type of kickstand — a la Nokia N96 — and a 3.5mm headphone jack! Yeah, really, a first in a Walkman set. What else can we tell ya? Nothing, though, we should all know soon enough if this pans out as real and is indeed set for release at Mobile World Congress next week.

Hitachi H001 with 3D display leads up KDDI au’s Spring 2009 lineup

January 28th, 2009 by

So KDDI’s latest lineup of new phones features the usual array of 8.1 megapixel cameras, wide VGA displays, one-seg TV tuners, and teleporters, but one particular handset stood out: Hitachi’s Wooo H001. The dual-hinge flip’s claim to fame — well, besides the bizarre color scheme — has to be the stereoscopic IPS display that presumably uses the same parallax barrier method shown off by the carrier late last year. The phone will happily serve up 3D-ified versions of various UI elements and mobile TV content, and when you start to get woozy (or Wooozy, as it were), just flip a switch and you’re back to the reassuring flatness you’re used to. It’ll launch in three colors in April, and naturally, you’ll have to be in Japan to get it.

Sony Ericsson’s BST-33 Li-Polymer batteries swelling into a lawsuit?

January 28th, 2009 by

We’ve seen plenty of swollen and exploding batteries ’round here, but this is the first Li-Polymer battery (a technology generally assumed to be more stable and less prone to swelling and fire than Li-Ion) that we can recall ballooning into such a possible danger. Reader Christian sent us these pics of what’s normally a 4-mm thick battery (pictured right) inside his W880i handset now swollen to a full 7-mm. The BST-33 sits at the heart of a long list of SE phones, a list we’ve included after the break along with one more picture. Do let us know if you’re seeing similar issues.

Sony refuses PlayStation brand for PSP Phone?

January 16th, 2009 by

We’ve been following PSP Phone rumors since 2006, forever on a tech timeline. A device we figure to be in-line with the natural evolution of mobile gaming and by the fact that Sony already licenses its Bravia and Cyber-shot brands for use on other Sony Ericsson phones. Not so fast buster. Mobile Today (citing “several sources close to the matter”) is reporting that Sony Ericsson has been refused the use of the PlayStation brand by Sony Corp. after pitching the business case in December. A spokesperson for Sony Ericsson wouldn’t comment directly on the matter but did say, “In the past, we have been keen that our product proposition lives up to brand promise, and we feel at the moment the technical specs are not high enough to put such a prestigious brand on a phone.” With Sony Ericsson posting a massive $346 million dollar loss today compared to the $95 million expected, well, maybe Sony’s wisdom shouldn’t be questioned. Then again, Sony’s not doing much better.

Man swipes prototype phones from Sony Ericsson, is caught

January 14th, 2009 by

Details are still a bit fuzzy on this one, but reports out of Sweden say that a 35-year-old map swiped a batch of prototype phones from Sony Ericsson’s Lund offices on Monday or Tuesday and was then promptly arrested on Wedneday after police discovered the prototypes, along with a hundred other phones, at his home. According to Sony Ericsson, the man was not an employee but had a “working relationship” with the company, and apparently used a pass card to gain entry to the building. Police also found a laptop with some unspecified contents at the man’s home, and say that the total value of the theft was about 750,000 kronor, or roughly $90,000.
