MacBook / MacBook Pro rumor roundup

October 12th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Well the rumoratti has certainly been working overtime today when it comes to Apple, so we’ve decided to bundle all the news that’s currently doing the rounds into one tasty and nutritious post.

First up, there are new — and quite detailed — pictures out of what appears to be those MacBook and MacBook Pro casings we saw during the week. Again, we can’t 100 percent confirm that these are the real deal, but they certainly have that Air-meets-MacBook hybrid quality to them that would suggest we’re looking at the next iteration of the line.

Secondly, Apple has gone and published a support document for the “MacBook/MacBook Pro (Late 2008)” — which suggests (gasp!) that there might be some late 2008 refreshes in our future. Oh really? Weird.

Rounding out the excitement, AppleInsider “confirms” the rumor that the new MacBooks will jettison the integrated Intel graphics which previous models have used in favor of NVIDIA’s MCP79 platform. The new GPUs apparently use a new set of GeForce 9300 and 9400 chips that will make previous performance look archaic by comparison. Additionally, according to hotshot Mac rumor specialist Kevin Rose, the new systems will support Blu-ray drives, thus finally allowing you to watch season 4 of Lost the way the lord intended it.

As with all rumors, you can never really know which one of these is going to stick, but luckily we won’t have to wait very long to get to the bottom of it. In the meantime, feel free to peruse the various links below and soak in the sweet, sweet gossip.

More pics of Apple’s supposed new laptops surface

October 8th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Oh Apple — release some new laptops so this madness can end. The forums at MacRumors are abuzz over a Taiwanese site that’s showing off pictures of what appears to be a very close cousin of that MacBook Pro-esque casing we saw earlier. This isn’t the same model, surely, but it does bear a striking similarity in both design and materials — and after lots of deliberation and comparisons, we’re fairly sure this isn’t the Air either (the hinge ends in a totally different spot in relation to the keys). That machined quality we noted in the earlier post is present, though as we said previously, the sides of these housings do look like separate pieces. Regardless, if any of this is even remotely true (and not another Photoshop from someone’s mother’s basement), Apple is indeed taking its laptops in an Air direction, which isn’t surprising — but signs of these being the end-result of new manufacturing process? The jury’s still way out. One more pic after the break of that controversial side piece.

Apple introducing new manufacturing process, MacBook ‘Brick’?

October 5th, 2008 by

Filed under:

The Apple rumor mill has really cooked up a doozy this time. According to 9to5mac — a site with a fairly good track record — Apple’s next big thing isn’t just a laptop or an iPod… it’s an entirely new manufacturing process. If you believe the site’s sources, an as-yet-unannounced event on October 14th will herald in a new iteration of the MacBook dubbed the “Brick,” but the big news won’t actually be about the laptop. Apparently, Apple has created a brand-new process to sculpt casings for products out of aircraft-grade aluminum, using a system that carves the pieces out of a single block of metal using “3D lasers” and water-jet cutting. The new technique will supposedly allow for seamless components which require no bending or folding, won’t use screws to join together, are ultra-light but also “super strong,” and will enable the company to rapidly prototype and produce new designs. Of course, not a single word of this is confirmed or even acknowledged by Apple, though we have been hearing whispers of the “Brick” for a few weeks now. Ultimately, everyone should approach this news with extreme skepticism, but if these rumors get magically transmuted into reality, there’s no telling what kind of new gear Apple might have up its sleeve.

Slimmer Xbox 360 spied in the wild? (mystery solved)

September 25th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We received an interesting tip that we thought we’d share with the group. Windows expert and all-around bon vivant Paul Thurrott recently previewed Microsoft’s new Arc mouse on his personal blog, detailing the device with a handful of photos. In the final shot of the series, what appear to be two Xboxes side-by-side can be seen in the lower right-hand corner… but one of those consoles looks thinner than the other. The appearance of what might be a slimmer Xbox 360 has (needless to say) sparked a debate amongst our editors here. Some say it’s nothing — a matter of angle — while others argue that this could be just the scenario in which you’d see a leak of a new form factor. Either way, you can’t simply brush off the differences here, and a little Photoshop matching on our end proved that these edges are decidedly different in angle. So we put it to the Engadget reader: is this a sign of things to come, or just our imaginations running wild?

Update: And we have our answer! Paul Thurrott has gone to the trouble of detailing just exactly what’s going on here, and it is an angle issue. Needless to say, we’ve got a lot of deflated dreams and lightened pockets in the office today.

[Thanks, Brian]

Voodoo’s latest Envy hiding in plain sight?

September 24th, 2008 by

Filed under:

See that? We could be wrong but that’s not a 13.3-inch Envy 133 laptop — it’s bigger. In other words, while the video titled “Voodoo Envy: Carbon Fiber Closeup” is certainly an Envy, we’re guessing (or at least hoping) it’s the recently teased model. Widescreen Envy 184 anyone? Hit the read link for the full video.

P.S. Yes, the carbon fiber micro-weave is smokin’

Android making the jump to general consumer electronics in 2009?

September 23rd, 2008 by

While the world waits to see the first Android cellphone revealed in New York later today, others are hard at work extending the reach of the open-source OS beyond just handsets. John Bruggeman, chief marketing officer at Wind River Systems says, “We’re starting to see Android get designed in on devices that extend way beyond the phone–things that might go in the automobile or things that might go in the home.” Bruggeman then collects his wits and adds, “I don’t want to pre-announce any design wins, I think you’ll see them in 2009. I would be shocked if you didn’t.” Indeed. After all, Intel and Wind River (both Android Open Handset Alliance members) have been working on an open, Linux-based car-computing platform since at least May of this year — so a switch to Android would be an over-simplified snap. It certainly makes sense for the hardware independent — thanks to Java-based Dalvik virtual machine — OS, middleware, and apps to spread throughout a consumer electronics industry lacking a common develoment platform. Whether this occurs by Google’s design or just a happy by-product of Android’s momentum remains to be seen.

Video: Toshiba’s gesture control coming to its cell-based TVs?

September 19th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Remember that Qosmio G55 laptop with gesture control? Yeah, the one with the Cell-based SpursEngine under the hood. Well it looks like Tosh is bringing that so-called “natural” gesture input to its future cell-based televisions. Judging by the latest video alone, the gesture control seems more at home on the big-screen TV than smaller-screened laptops that require a higher degree of precision and closer viewing proximity. Demonstrated on a prototype, Toshiba hints that the tech might come to future Cell-based TVs — interesting what with the cell-based ZF televisions already announced for Europe. While we find pushing buttons on a remote about as natural (and lazy) as it gets, here’s hoping for this arm-flailing gesture control on future Toshiba TVs just for the nerdiness of it. Video of the G55 gesture input as well as the prototype television show at IFA after the break.

New MacBook Pros leaked on German site?

September 17th, 2008 by

Filed under:

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/New_Macbook_Pro_released_on_German_Site’; Sure, none of it makes any sense, but we can’t shake the feeling that there’s something a little weird going on here. We’ve received a number of tips that T-Systems — a division of the same company that owns T-Mobile — has got pics of some variation of a MacBook Pro that we’ve certainly never seen before. The appearance of a new model would fall right in line with those rumors we’ve been hearing, but this seems a little too easy. In fact, the specs of these devices appear unchanged from the current lineup of laptops. The likely explanation is that there’s been a photo mix-up — someone got their proper MBP pictures crossed with one of those “wishful thinking” renders. Then again, given Apple’s recent propensity for leaked photos… maybe there’s something more to this.

Update: As a commenter noted, the above picture does look very, very similar to this fan-made mock-up, yet there are noticeable differences between the two (the thickness of the base, shape of the screen, location and style of the optical drive, width of the trackpad), which ultimately raise more questions.

New MacBooks already shipping, hitting stores September 23rd?

September 15th, 2008 by

Filed under:

If we’re to believe a report out today from Citigroup analyst Richard Gardner, Steve Jobs may be taking his “one more thing” to its logical — and lengthy — conclusion. According to Gardner (via Barron’s) “field checks” on Apple’s movements have “confirmed shipments” of “new MacBooks.” Gardner goes on to detail stand-out features of the new laptops, saying the currently-en-route devices boast a “very thin aluminum casing, an LED backlit display and an aggressive entry-level price point.” Sure, this crazy talk does happen to fall somewhat in line with recent tips we’ve received suggesting that a new MacBook Pro will be headed onto store shelves come September 23rd, but that doesn’t change the fact that all of this information is being reported by lone sources (Citigroup affiliation notwithstanding) with absolutely no evidence to back up their claims. We won’t argue that it would be great to see a much-needed update to MacBooks and / or Pros in the very near future, but we don’t recommend placing any bets… not until we see some more of those juicy Apple leaks.

Supposed 4th gen iPod nano case designs slip out

August 24th, 2008 by

Sure, magic man and all-around seer Kevin Rose delivered the “news” that a refreshed iPod nano is coming in the form that slimmed up, tapered in, longish tube of a device — but you might be looking for harder evidence. We’ve just come across two case-related designs supposedly destined for Apple’s next PMP, but both raise as many questions as they answer. Chinese accessory-maker Beelan apparently has a silicon sleeve ready to drop ship to a location of your choice via Alibaba, and iDealsChina is showing off renders of the 4th gen nano and another case from “some unknown Canadian company.” Unfortunately, neither design can really be verified, and as they’ve just appeared on the heels of last night’s Rose rumor, the timing seems a touch suspect. We’re wondering what the Engadget hive-mind thinks — any meat on these bones?

Radio Shack ad confirms Xbox 360 price cuts?

August 20th, 2008 by

Filed under:

According to our good, dear, beautiful friends at Joystiq (and Radio Shack, incidentally) the Xbox 360 family is going to be seeing those rumored price cuts in the very near future. Falling right in line with that chatter we heard at the beginning of the month, a leaked Radio Shack circular seems to indicate that there will be reductions across the board for the console, with the 60GB version clocking in at $299, the Elite running you a cool $399, and the Arcade setup dropping to a totally affordable $199 (we’re looking at you, potential Xbox LIVE opponents). Sure this could all be some Photoshop wiz’s idea of a hilarious joke, but we’re keeping the fingers and toes crossed over here. Target date for truth? September 7th — so stay tuned.

Intel teases with a new tablet at IDF, shows off the best of the rest

August 19th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Apparently Intel is on a bit of a roll already at this year’s IDF. After showcasing and talking up a number of new products, including (but not limited to) the lap-destroying mobile Quad Core Extreme CPUs (as featured in Lenovo’s vicious W700), new switchable graphics solutions that allow on-the-fly toggling between integrated and discrete graphics, and even more talk about forthcoming WiMAX options. What really got everyone’s eye, however, was a slide they teased with at the end of Mobility Group VP / GM Dadi Perlmutter’s presentation of a mystery touchscreen tablet with the ominous question “What is this?” and a promise to reveal the goods tomorrow morning. Call us dangerously psychotic, but it looks like a clunky medical accessory to us. Paging Dr. Design to Intel’s R&D lab, STAT.

Apple trims push notification out of newest iPhone firmware beta

August 17th, 2008 by

Filed under:

According to Appleinsider, the newest beta of iPhone firmware (2.1, beta 4) has been seeded to developers, but takes one crucial element off the table — push notification. If you’ll recall, the new feature will allow third-party developers to take advantage of Apple’s servers for real-time push of data to and from applications. Apparently, the feature has been cut from the most recent beta for “further development” with no indication of when it will be reinstated. Of course, this is a beta seed of the firmware — the actual release is slated for September — and it makes sense that Apple would be tweaking major additions like this before going live, especially considering its recent launch debacles.

New Canon 5D Mark II details leak out

August 17th, 2008 by

Filed under:

If you’re a camera fan waiting for the next tiny, juicy, delicious morsel of information to leak out on the Canon 5D Mark II — you’re in luck. According to the cats and kittens over in the forums at Digital Photography Review (who claim this information is “105% accurate,” the pricey (yet affordable in its range) DSLR will head out on September 8th for $2,399.95 packing a 16 megapixel sensor, 6 FPS shooting, ISO to the ridiculously high 25,600, full weather sealing, and a VGA-resolution display. The leaker also mentions a lot of features it won’t have (pop-up flash, HDMI-out, no video mode), though right now this is all hearsay — don’t go making any final decisions till this thing actually drops.

Report claims iPod, MacBook, and MacBook Pro shortages coming… along with new gear

July 30th, 2008 by

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/Apple_Hints_Of_iPod_MacBook_MacBook_Pro_Shortages_Coming’; According to a report from AppleInsider, the Cupertino giant is issuing “advisement bulletins” to some of its channel partners suggesting they get their hands on iPods and MacBooks / MacBook Pros while the gettin’s good. It seems that Apple is telling resellers to place orders for a four-week block’s worth of top-selling iPods, saying that within the next seven days supplies will become extremely limited, while recommending a three-week supply of MacBooks and MacBook Pros. The article claims that this practice is familiar to third-party sellers, and indicates Apple is ramping up for its holiday season (and new iPods and MacBooks / Pros, presumably). Of course, right now this is just whispers in high school hallways, but we can promise you this: Apple will be selling something this holiday season. You have our word.

Analyst says Android and Symbian to merge, Nokia and Google to get matching tattoos

July 25th, 2008 by

Filed under:

According to the oracle-like superbrains at J. Gold Associates, Google’s Android OS and Nokia’s Symbian will “combine to provide a single open source OS,” sometime in the very near future… say, three to six months. Sure, Android is just about to launch on devices in late 2008, and Nokia just announced in June that it will be moving Symbian towards open source — and of course the two companies have no formal relationship that would come close to permitting such a collaboration. Still, J. Gold assures us this is happening, stating, “A combination of the Android and Symbian efforts would be good for the industry, good for Google and good for Symbian.” In related news, we understand a handful of similar mergers are in the offing: Linksys and Belkin, Red Hat and Ubuntu, Engadget and Gizmodo, and the inevitable one-two punch of Coke and Pepsi.

Update: Craziest thing, it turns out that Google, Nokia, and Symbian are all dismissing the platform merger talk as utter nonsense. And for once, we believe those trusty souls; who knows, maybe it’s the complete lack of technical synergy between them?

BlackBerry Thunder’s keyboard rumored to be totally awesome

July 8th, 2008 by

Filed under:

According to the folks over at CrackBerry (who, let’s be honest, might be a little biased when it comes to a certain brand of cellphone), Research In Motion’s upcoming touchscreen phone — the infamous Thunder — will feature a virtual keyboard so realistic you’ll swear you’re sitting in front of 1986 IBM Model M. CrackBerry says “reliable sources” have told them that the device’s screen will utilize a number of advanced technologies to create such an effect, including localized haptic feedback, which allows the screen to be literally pushed in while rewarding you with a vibration and click sound, and the option of a full QWERTY or SureType layout (depending on the phone’s orientation). We can’t speculate too much until we handle the device ourselves, but we’re expecting this thing to blow our minds out through the front of our heads. That’s not asking too much, is it RIM?

Is T-Mobile’s 3G service rolling out nationwide in October?

According to the overactive internet rumor party line, T-Mobile is planning to take its currently limited 3G service nationwide come October. Of course, right now this is pure speculation and hearsay, until we get confirmation from T-Mobile (or at least some hard evidence), we’ll just have to keep our fingers and toes crossed.
