We’ve got airbags in the front, airbags to the side, even airbags on the hip — and now Toyota’s installing the first rear-collision airbags into its Japan-only iQ minicar. The bags are designed to protect rear seat passengers, and inflate from above the rear window to blanket your noggin and reduce impact force to the head by half. The new system will be installed in iQ’s by the end of the year, no word on whether it’ll come to the States anytime soon.

With all these companies honing in on bringing HD capabilities to handsets, we were beginning to wonder when someone would step up and lend a hand on the audio front. Thankfully, both Dolby and SRS Labs have come forward at Mobile World Congress to announce separate enhancements to mobile audio, so we’ll touch on the former first. Dolby Mobile, hailed as an “audio processing technology platform that brings rich, vibrant surround sound to music, movies, and television programs on mobile phones and portable media players,” is available as we speak on the FOMA SH905i and FOMA SH905iTV in Japan, but will hopefully float out to other handsets in due time. As for SRS Labs, it’s boasting its own SRS CS Headphone technology, which reportedly “takes stereo or surround encoded 2-channel audio and processes it using an ultra-low-power Circle Surround decoder to create 5.1 highly accurate channels.” Granted, we’re still wondering exactly how 5.1 channels make their way though stereo earbuds, but we’d be up for a listen, regardless.

Just in case you haven’t had your fill of in-car audio news tonight, Eclipse is hitting us up with a brand spankin’ new head unit of its own. The CD7200 mk II should slide right into any single-DIN gap, and it comes HD Radio / SAT radio-ready in case you grow tired of listening to those MP3 / WMA discs of yours. Additionally, this unit features a built-in USB port, eight-volt pre-amp, E-iSERV technology, iPod support and SRS Circle Surround to boot. Your guess is as good as ours when it comes to a price and release date, though, but we’d bet this one won’t remain in the shadows for too much longer.

It looks like SRS Labs has found yet another outlet for its sound-enhancing technology, with the company today announcing that it’s signed up IOGEAR as its latest partner. What’s more, it seems that IOGEAR isn’t wasting any time in getting its first piece of gear out the door, as it’s also taken the opportunity to introduce its new Bluetooth Audio Transport device, which promises to “dramatically improve the audio performance of content played on any Bluetooth-enabled audio device.” The unit also boasts a microphone to let you get in some SRS-enhanced calling, and it should last you around six hours before it needs a recharge. If that’s enough to get you to ditch your current headset, you should be able to grab one of these right now for $80.
