So it’s true — hordes of DirecTV users weren’t just dreaming about a glitch that required a painstaking reboot to start the week off. DirecTV has sent out e-mails to loads of affected users which were unexpectedly forced to mash the red “Reset” button located within a door on the front panel of their HD DVR / receiver in order to get things going again. Of course, even the mighty satcaster can’t replace any missed recordings that were scheduled, but it is “sincerely” sorry for the inconvenience. You’ll still be paying your full bill, though, so it’s not that sorry.

Generally, we’d pass something like this off as just coincidence, but when over 95% of 1,000+ respondents confess to sharing the same issue, we simply can’t turn the other cheek. It’s assumed that DirecTV botched up a software update early this morning that affected a number of HR2X set-tops. Over at DBSTalk, the vast majority of readers who voluntarily took part in a poll affirmed that at least one of their HR2X units required a restart / reboot this morning. We know there’s no real point in asking if you too were affected, but that aside, what was DirecTV attempting to send down? The world may never know.

With apologies to Shakespeare, something is brewing at VUDU. With CEDIA just around the corner, the company has laid off some of its staff, most notably some of its marketing higher-ups. Additionally, rumors are swirling regarding just about every aspect of the upstart company’s future. CEPro got some talk-time with the VUDU’s national dealer channel manager, and a theme of decreased emphasis on the retail channel seems to run throughout the conversation, punctuated by a end-of-life status on the VUDU X100. Meanwhile, the company is making some CEDIA promises for its custom-install-targeted VUDU XL: more HD content (1,000 titles), more connectivity (HD over component) and lifetime warranties on purchased titles. It’s all rumor, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see VUDU move exclusively into the custom-install market where it seems to have a toe-hold. So what say ye — is something rotten in VUDU, or should we hang up the codpiece and get back to work?

Shortly after hearing TiVo’s top dog speak of a “whole home model” to reduce the amount of STBs required for entertaining individuals in various rooms, along comes Time Warner Cable’s chief executive talking up some innovation of its own. We’ll be frank — we’re not entirely sure what Glenn Britt is getting at here, but through a broken series of quotes, we’re led to believe that the carrier is prepping some “equipment” that will easily bring internet content to TVs. Not like there isn’t a perfect solution for this quandary already, but we digress. Specifically, he mentions a ” new wireless cable modem that will allow you to network everything in your house,” which is about as broad / vague as you can get. Nevertheless, it’s enough to keep us watchin’, though we can’t say our expectations are extraordinarily high. [Disclosure: Engadget is part of the Time Warner family]

Although DISH Network’s previous quarter wasn’t anything to write home about, it sounds like the satcaster (EchoStar, technically) isn’t going to allow its set-top line to grow stale in the process. During the recent Team Summit in Nashville, Tennessee, DISH’s CEO Charlie Ergen reiterated that it would be beaming out “more than 100 national HD channels” by the end of 2008, and he also made mention that the EchoStar 11 satellite would lift off in July. Most interesting, however, was all the talk about the new STBs. The forthcoming ViP 722 will be the first HD DVR from the outfit with loads of Sling technology built in — not too shocking considering the recent acquisition. Additionally, the box is said to feature an all new interface and the ability to browse to (select) websites, double as a SlingCatcher and even handle Clip & Sling duties. In case you’re not content with just keeping your current cable / satellite / fiber TV service and using the recently launched ZvBox to pull in content from the web, a new startup is aiming to satisfy your bizarre desires. In what’s potentially the most befuddling launch of the year, said firm is looking to introduce its 1TB set-top-box to consumers on a city-by-city basis. Put simply (or, as simply as possible), the box will fetch content from a number of places: the built-in OTA receiver will grab locals, and it will use the owner’s broadband internet connection to snag IPTV material and web-based content (YouTube, Hulu, etc.). Sezmi plans to launch the product with “3G and DSL” telcos that don’t currently have a way to offer a triple-play package, and while some sources say that monthly fees will be as low as “half” of a typical cable / satellite bill, we’ve also seen Phil Wiser, co-founder, chairman and president, quoted as saying that it will be “roughly comparable” to its rivals. Well, what do you know? TiVo’s delivering as promised with this one, as Desktop Plus 2.6 is indeed going live in March — just like we were told back in January (and nary a week after TiVo promised YouTube access later this year). Truth be told, there’s not a whole lot here that you didn’t already get a taste of in our hands-on at CES, but here’s the skinny. As of today, TiVo users can grab hold of the latest version of Desktop (Windows only, we’re afraid) and “enjoy a broad range of web entertainment available directly from their TV.” More specifically, these customers “can choose web videos downloaded on the home PC using web browsers, RSS video clients such as iTunes podcasts, or other video download software to automatically copy to their TiVo DVR’s Now Playing List alongside recorded broadcast and cable TV shows.” In case you couldn’t tell, Desktop Plus 2.6 can be downloaded today for a one-time fee of $24.95, but consider that waived if you’re upgrading from an earlier version. Samsung’s See’N'Search set-top box that intelligently and automatically pulls content from the internet to match whatever TV show is on sounded nice enough, but we wanted to see it in action. Apparently the good people at Samsung have also perfected their wish-granting technology to match the the unit’s metadata scrapers, because here’s a demo video. Check it out after the break, and be mindful of your thoughts, wouldn’t want to distract Samsung’s R&D from preparing that sandwich we just telepathically requested.

This one’s just coming across the wires, but apparently, Netflix is actually developing a movie set-top-box with LG Electronics. If you’ll recall, there was quite a buzz surrounding such a device years back, but rumblings had remained largely dormant until a few months back. Slated to launch sometime in Q2, the networked player would purportedly allow owners to stream in movies for viewing on their television, and it’s being reported that the feature would be “included in all of its various price plans… at no extra charge.” Pricing deets on the LG device have yet to be disclosed, but we’re told that the firm could “embed the receiver into its $799 dual-DVD player [likely the BH200].” According to Netflix Chief Executive Reed Hastings, the LG partnership will hopefully be “the first of many such deals” for the company, and he added that he’d love to “see a hundred Netflix-capable boxes,” suggesting that there could be deals struck with internet-connected gaming consoles as well as cable / satellite providers. We’ll be keeping an ear to the ground for further details.

It was hard not to doubt yet another seemingly baseless promise heard just this week, but apparently, things have finally fell into place for Comcast and TiVo. According to TiVo spokesman Whit Clay, the New England market of Comcast users can now get their hands on TiVo STBs, as the operator has at long last “begun the commercial rollout of its first cable set-top-boxes that run TiVo’s digital video recording technology.” Unfortunately, that’s all the nitty gritty that has been unveiled thus far, but we’ll keep an ear to the ground for further details.

Sony hasn’t exactly been shy about expanding the capabilities of its PS3, and according to new reports from The Korea Times, even more non-game-related goodness will be headed its way. Apparently, KT (Korea’s primary telecom operator) and Sony will “launch an internet-based TV service in November that runs on the PlayStation 3 game console,” and as expected, the machine would act as a set-top-box for KT’s IPTV service (Mega TV). Reportedly, neither company was willing to disclose pricing information (or any additional details, for that matter) just yet, so it looks like we’ll be forced to play the wait-and-see game for now.
