We could tell by looking that RIM wouldn’t think of charging too many hundies for its still unannounced BlackBerry KickStart, but $49.99? CrackBerry has it that said flip phone will be selling at T-Mobile for a penny under $50 on a two-year contract, which certainly seems smart given the competition. ‘Course, we’ve nothing to substantiate this with just yet, but take one more look at that chubby side and tell us this thing deserves a triple digit price tag. That’s right, you can’t.

As expected, T-Mobile has taken the wraps off its very own version of Motorola’s ROKR E8, a glossy black candybar offering a 2 megapixel camera, 2GB of internal storage (plus a microSD slot that’ll swallow up to 8GB more), stereo Bluetooth, 3.5mm headphone jack, FM radio, and that so-called “morphing” keypad that selectively renders keys invisible depending on the mode you’re using. It’s missing 3G, but that’s one feature T-Mobile customers are all too well acquainted to missing out on — and considering that the just-announced flagship ZN5 doesn’t even do any WCDMA, it shouldn’t come as any surprise. Subscribers and would-be subscribers will be able to nab the E8 come July 7 for $199.99 on contract.

Still really attached to that landline phone? Seriously? That’s cool, we still love you, and T-Mobile still wants your business. Following a few months of trials, the T-Mobile HotSpot @Home Talk Forever service has mercifully morphed into the simpler “T-Mobile @Home,” featuring a Linksys-sourced router that plugs into a broadband connection and allows any plain ol’ telephone — you know, the plug-in kind — to take advantage of unlimited nationwide calling for $10 a month on top of your regular T-Mobile bill. The so-called “HiPort” router runs $49.99 on a two-year contract, and if you’re in the market for a fancy new cordless, they’ll sell you a two-handset VTech DECT system for $59.99. No worries when you’re ready to hop back into the 21st century, either; the system will happily work with T-Mobile’s HotSpot @Home WiFi cellphones, too. Look for the whole shebang to go on sale July 2.

Unless you’ve been camped out under a Rhode Island-sized boulder for the past few weeks, you know that Verizon has announced its intentions to acquire Alltel. During a recent interview with CEO Scott Ford, Talk Business host Roby Brock was able to get a few talking points out of the exec that didn’t involve the most recent transaction. More specifically, Mr. Ford noted that prior to Alltel becoming a private company, it had “tried to buy Sprint three times, tried to buy AT&T Wireless [and] tried to buy T-Mobile.” He continued by saying that “some of those times it went with partners, [while] some of those times it didn’t.” Essentially, Alltel was “doing everything it could to get to a national platform.” Believe it or not, those quotes really are just the tip of the iceberg, but the full spill is entirely too detailed for this space. There’s still plenty of emerging details and news on the iPhone 3G kicking around, but here’s what you need to know from the minor bits floating around over the past few days:

• Jobs also told NYT that Apple’s acquisition of PA Semi was, in fact, intended to reduce Apple’s reliance on third-party chip makers. Specifically, he said, “PA Semi is going to do system-on-chips for iPhones and iPods.” So, guess that’s that.
• Per the feature showing up missing on a number of Apple’s international iPhone 3G product pages, iLounge compiled a list of carriers which may or may not planning on implementing visual voicemail. Vodafone in Europe, for example, will not have it at launch, and will delay its rollout until later this year.
• A video of a new iPhone beta build running on live hardware shows videos now in portrait or landscape modes, and includes video playlists. We’ll take it.
• Although DT’s iPhone page reads differently, German paper Welt has it that that T-Mobile Germany will be selling it for €1 — so basically free, not unlike O2’s iPhone 3G launch in the UK.

Just when we thought things were kosher between Starbucks, T-Mobile, and AT&T over the Wi-Fi switchover, it turns out that T-Mobile isn’t so happy with how the deal is playing out. They claimed Starbucks secretly colluded with AT&T to offer free WiFi access and left T-Mobile in the lurch. The lawsuit, filed last week in New York state court, alleges that AT&T and Starbucks weren’t sticking to the terms of the original agreement, which would have allowed T-Mobile customers to freely roam on the new AT&T service. Now, it seems, they’ve all entered into a “memorandum of understanding to resolve their disputes and are committed to providing a high quality WiFi experience for customers.” So far, though, we don’t know any details as to what this agreement will mean for T-Mobile WiFi subscribers, but we’ll keep an eye on this.

We look at sellers of unreleased phones on eBay much the same way we look at the FCC’s device approval database: fun for window shopping, but that’s about it. We’re not sure we’d personally part with enough cash to find out whether the seller of this particular HTC Shadow II for T-Mobile actually has the thing to sell us, though we can totally understand why well-heeled folk might be willing to give it a go (and if we had enough money to buy a phone straight off an FCC lab, we’d probably be living somewhere in a private archipelago with no phone service to start with). The long-rumored smartphone seems to change colors every time we see it, with this latest pack of photos suggesting a glossy black front with dark red gradient accents — not bad, we’ll admit. Like the original, the Shadow II packs WiFi and a 2 megapixel camera, but when it launches later this year it’ll come out of the box with Windows Mobile 6.1 and a decidedly friendlier industrial design. Oh — and hopefully, a friendlier price than a functional prototype is currently commanding on auction.

That deal AT&T whipped out of their hats to take over T-Mobile’s position as sole provider of WiFi at Starbucks? Turns out T-Mo is pissed about how the transition has gone down, and has filed suit against the buxx alleging collusion with AT&T, despite their supposedly exclusive agreement. Apparently T-Mo was basically allowed to run out its time serving and promoting WiFi service while Starbucks shops slowly converted over to AT&T. But T-Mo feels like it’s basically been pushed out (you don’t say!), claiming only two markets (San Antonio and Bakersfield) have actually legitimately transitioned to AT&T — far too little for Starbucks to come off like T-Mo service is done and over. We don’t know how much the suit’s worth in damages, but it sounds like they’ll be after a lot more cash than their magenta-related filings have brought in.

The rumored Tony Hawk edition of the Sidekick LX is said to be making its first public appearance today, looking every bit the part with a “skateboard look and feel” made complete with “grip-tape-texture” and the skateboarding icon’s name plastered across the display’s bezel. This one isn’t just about branding, though — it’s being said that T-Mobile will use the occasion to launch a rather hearty LX firmware update that includes video recording, stereo Bluetooth, additional themes, some sort of video sharing capability, and more; it’ll be available to all LX owners some time this summer via an over-the-air update. Meanwhile, the very special Tony Hawk piece should be made available to buyers in mid-July.

Well, would you look at that — our good friend Deutsche Telekom seems to have lost a lawsuit it filed against rival European wireless carrier Telia over its use of the color magenta in its logo. The Danish Eastern Regional High Court today ruled that Telia and DT don’t compete directly in the Danish market and that Telia isn’t using the same magenta shade, leading the court to overturn an injunction DT sought against Telia’s use of the color. On top of that, the court further ruled that Deutsche Telekom has to fork over 1.5M kroner ($316,188) in court costs and attorneys’ fees to Telia, which probably stings a little more than having to share a color. Of course, now that magenta is the People’s Color, maybe DT should look into playing a little nicer, don’t you think?

derStandard, the same publication that announced that the iPhone would be sailing into Austria via T-Mobile is now reporting that the same carrier will be testing the 3G iPhone in the aforesaid country. During a press conference in Vienna, T-Mo Austria reportedly affirmed that a UMTS version of Apple’s handset would “soon be available,” and that Austria would be the “testing ground” for the new mobile — not to mention “among the first countries in the world with the UMTS iPhone.” Furthermore, bigwigs stated that “more flexible” offers would be made available, but details beyond that were scant.

Great news, T-Mobile USA fans — the roller coaster ride is finally over. After we thought T-Mobile’s 3G network was but moments away from launching, we soon found that data may be left out. Oddly enough, a few reports hailing from the Big Apple claimed that data actually was included. At long last, the carrier is coming clean and announcing its official 3G rollout in the States. Unfortunately, the UMTS / HSDPA network is initially launching in New York City alone, but the good news is that data will be included and the operator expects the high-speed data network to “be available in cities where a majority of its subscribers currently use data services” by the year’s end. Yeah, it’s safe to celebrate now, we promise it’s not a(nother) false alarm. Full release posted after the jump.

Over the years our pals at Deutsche Telekom haven’t exactly played the most aggressive game in the States, but finally we have word about the first possible suitor for the ailing Sprint. Although the rumor originates from German paper Der Spiegel and doesn’t cite sources, word has it Deutsche Telekom and T-Mobile USA are making the possibility of snagging Sprint (and all its heavy baggage, read: Nextel) a “top priorty” in a bid to take a competitor out of the game and pick up the number three spot. Supposedly formal negotiations haven’t even begun yet, but if you thought the integration between Sprint and Nextel was messy, just watch what happens when you bring a third carrier into the mix — and did we mention the infrastructure would would be GSM with AWS, PCS CDMA, and iDEN, all competing for spectrum and handset allocation? Good luck guys.

T-Mobile’s 3G network started going live today, and it looks like that early word from a company memo may not hold true for all users. Some markets may in fact have a silent soft-launch of faster data rates, we’ve heard from several tipsters who’ve said that they’re already getting faster data service, and now the company itself getting the word out that it’s launching data as well. But company peeps were indeed instructed to make sure customers don’t count on that faster data being present; bottom line is you may have it, you may not (but if you take T-Mobile at its word, you should). Well screw us — T-Mobile’s 3G network debut tomorrow? It’s going to be voice only. That’s right, you heard us, VOICE ONLY. So trepidatious is this company to actually get their 3G data rollout, um, rolled out, they’re launching first with kneecapped voice-only service, keeping only EDGE for those demanding data. Here’s the snippet from the memo we received:

“3G is the next generation of our wireless network, following our current GSM network. In this early phase of our network evolution, 3G is a new technology for carrying wireless voice calls and supporting existing data capabilities on our network. In future phases, this next generation network will power ‘high-speed’ (3G) products and services that connect customers in new and exciting ways. … Inform customers who are interested in high-speed data that the first phase of our 3G roll out supports voice only.” [Emphasis ours]

No word on when T-Mobile actually plans to turn on the faster data, but for everyone who hasn’t already jumped ship — hoping against hope — the wait continues.

P.S. -Don’t believe everything you hear about this kind of thing being status quo. Every single major US 3G network — including Cingular, Verizon, and Sprint — went live as either data card-only (with phones added later), or data and voice together.

Our best friends at T-Mobile are getting set to roll out 3G in New York soon — real soon, as was previously expected. New York will launch on May 1, to be exact, according to TmoNews.com. That’s, like, tomorrow. The leaked document promises T-Mobile customers the “great call quality they’ve come to expect…and more network availability”. The rest of the network will be rolled out in 2008 to 20 markets, including Los Angeles, Detroit, San Diego, Austin, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Miami, and several more. As TmoNews.com points out, New Jersey and Long Island are mysteriously off the list. View all the launch cities after the break.

The first Android devices were always scheduled to arrive later this year, and while we’ve already seen a couple prototypes and hacked ports floating around, it looks like T-Mobile is the first out of the gate to confirm that it’ll have phones based on Google’s mobile OS. Speaking at the Wireless Innovations 2008 conference, T-Mo’s VP of broadband and new business division Joe Sims said he’d played with an early version of T-Mobile’s first Android phone and that it would ship in the fourth quarter of this year. Sims said that although he was initially skeptical of Android, he’s now “impressed,” and that T-Mobile would eventually have “more than one” Android phone. Now, if someone would just let us know what this magical phone actually is, we’d be happy — HTC Dream, anyone?
