Senator opens inquiry into rising text messaging rates

September 10th, 2008 by

Filed under:

The increasingly high cost of text messaging has already caused a bit of a stir in Canada, and it looks like Democratic Senator Herb Kohl of Wisconsin is concerned with the situation in the US as well, with him now opening an inquiry to attempt to get the carriers to explain themselves. Apparently, Kohl is a bit puzzled as to why some customers are now paying 20 cents per message when they paid just 10 cents in 2005, a period that Kohl notes just happens to overlap with some consolidation in the wireless industry, when the number of national carriers shrunk from six to four. Those carriers, as you might expect, aren’t saying much just yet, with Sprint only going as far as to say that it looks forward to “responding to the Senator’s inquiry about the text messaging options we offer our customers and we will fully cooperate with his request,” and the rest saying even less.

Avidyne’s MLX770 provides pilots with two-way text messaging support

September 2nd, 2008 by

It’s not that texting from planes is currently impossible, it’s just not terribly reliable. Thanks to Avidyne’s Q4-bound MLX770, however, all that is about to change. The two-way datalink receiver will not only enable pilots to have access to the radar mosaic for most of the world along with weather conditions, but it will add support for text messaging right from the MFD. And we’re not talking about CPLDC — we’re talking bona fide SMS. To keep pilots from chatting away too much unnecessarily, the system will limit messages to 32 characters, and beyond that, each message sent will run between $1 and $2. And to think, we actually have the nerve to gripe about $0.20 texts…

3,000 LEDs used to build glitzy SMS-controlled UFO

July 13th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Hey France, we’ve got one more for your sophisticated UFO archive. Dreamed up by artist Peter Coffin and crafted in conjunction with London-based Cinimod Studio, this 7-meter structure was built from aluminum and covered with 3,000 shockingly bright programmable LEDs. Furthermore, there’s an on board 6kW generator to provide power, and the overall UFO can be remotely controlled via SMS. There are even assertions that this thing flew along the coast of Sopot, Poland on July 4th (and even a video to “prove it,” posted after the jump), but we all know how dubious such proclamations can be.

Survey finds 37% of Gen Y-ers text while driving

May 2nd, 2008 by

Oh sure, Americans are adamantly against texting while driving (in theory), but that’s not stopping those mischievous Gen Y-ers from getting their SMS on while behind the wheel. According to a new survey of 1,200 people conducted by Nationwide Mutual Insurance (we know, we know), a third of the Gen Y-ers admitted to “always multitasking while driving,” and while the “always” bit does indeed frighten us a tad, the real juice was in the next statistic: 37-percent said they sent text messages while driving. Before you start belaboring the imprudent youth, think long and hard about your own in-car cellphone usage — remember that time you just had to reply “y w pep plz” in order to salvage your friend’s pizza order? Tsk tsk.

Would you elect the president via text message? 61 percent say ‘Y’

April 21st, 2008 by

Filed under:

According to a recent, sensational survey from Samsung Mobile, 61 percent of lazy, distracted, and impossibly ignorant cellphone users over the age 18 say they would be comfortable casting their vote for President of the United States via a text message. Meanwhile, the totally serious and meaningful survey found that eight in ten (or 80 percent) of teens under the legal voting age would use their mobile devices to cast a ballot in the election. Additionally, Samsung Mobile discovered that 90 percent of cellphone users would like an ice cream cone, while another 87 percent would like an ice cream cone only after eating a quarter-pounder with cheese. Soon Samsung Mobile hopes to determine what percentage, if any, of the people surveyed know who is running for the office of president.

Bizarre campaign texts parents to check for lice in kids’ hair

April 10th, 2008 by

Filed under:

If you thought sending a SMS in order to gain entry into a public bathroom was on the weird side, get a load of this. An outlandish campaign sparked up in the UK has been sending out weekly text messages to parents in order to remind them of the need to check for head lice on their youngsters. Cleverly coined Beat the Bugs, the program led to the discovery of six cases of lice, and when polling participants at the end of the term, the majority stated that they felt more aware about treatment / prevention and that they were now checking their kids’ heads at least once per week. We can hear it now: “C’mon Jimmy, time for me to look through your locks for any critters!” “Ah, bugger.”

Compulsive e-mailing, texting could be classified as bona fide illness

March 17th, 2008 by

Considering the plethora of facilities that have opened just in the past few years to deal solely with individuals that have become undoubtedly addicted to video games, the internet and all things Hello Kitty (we jest, we jest), we’re not surprised one iota to hear that uncontrollably texting / e-mailing could soon become “classified as an official brain illness.” According to a writeup in the latest American Journal of Psychiatry, internet addiction is a common ailment “that should be added to psychiatry’s official guidebook of mental disorders.” More specifically, Dr. Jerald Block, a psychiatrist at the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, even goes so far as to argue that said phenomenon (neglecting basic drives to spend more time online) be “included in the [next edition of] Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, psychiatry’s official dictionary of mental illnesses.” Until then, we wish you the best of luck convincing that creature living in your basement with a dedicated T1 line that he / she isn’t alright.

Padded lampposts in London not really being tested

March 17th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We had a sneaking suspicion that the world hadn’t really come to strapping pads around lampposts in order to keep walking texters safe, and sure enough, the whole shebang was more of a stunt and less of a bona fide trial. Reportedly, only a few pads were put in place and photographed for around 36 hours — afterwards, the PR firm responsible for putting them up simply took them back down. It seems as if the scheme was meant to “test out [the idea] and gauge people’s opinions,” according to a 118 118 spokesman, and safe to say it certainly accomplished that.

Texting generation carrying spelling habits to birth certificates?

March 7th, 2008 by

Filed under:

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/people/Texting_Gen_carrying_spelling_habits_to_birth_certificates’; It’s bad enough when exams have to cater to horrific spellers due to their SMS-based vocabulary, but we’re doing everything we can to make ourselves believe this latest report simply isn’t true. Reportedly, a social analyst in Australia somehow believes that the wide range in spellings in a few popular names is due in large part to the fact that we spend way too much time as a whole conjugating and hyphenating in order to get text-based messages across. Said analyst was even quoted as saying that “the use of a ‘y’ instead of an ‘i’ has hit epidemic proportions, as has the use of ‘k’ over ‘c’.” Realistically, we’re not about to believe the SMS craze is actually affecting children’s names en masse, but please, do your next born a favor and give him / her the vowels they deserve.

Padded lampposts for distracted texters being tested in London

March 6th, 2008 by

Filed under:

According to a recent report, human beings are becoming so incredibly stupid that they require cushioned lamppost bases so that when they run into them they don’t mess up their idiotic faces. Apparently, a study in the UK found that one in ten people actually managed to hurt themselves by walking into a post while peering down at their mobile phone screen. The mishaps — called “walking and texting” injuries — have spurred the charity Living Streets to launch the padded-post-pilot scheme in Brick Lane, London. It seems that if all goes well, there are plans to roll out the idiot-proof system in Birmingam, Manchester, and Stupidton.

Finland’s roadside toilets: now accessible only by SMS

February 5th, 2008 by

Filed under:

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/odd_stuff/Finnish_toilets_text_to_pee’; While those in London can use SMS to actually find a lavatory, folks passing through Western Finland will be required to bust out their handset in order to relieve themselves in select public restrooms. In an attempt to curb vandalism, the Finnish Road Administration has implemented a system along Highway 1 which requires restroom visitors to text “Open” (in Finnish, of course) in order to let themselves in. The idea is that folks will be less likely to lose their mind and graffiti up the place knowing that their mobile number is (at least temporarily) on file, but it remains to be seen if uprooters will simply take their defacing ways elsewhere or actually excrete in peace.

Texting delays a given on New Years, celebrate accordingly

December 31st, 2007 by

Filed under:

It probably doesn’t come as much of a shock to you that plenty of texting goes down midnight-ish tonight, and naturally the carriers are gearing up for just such an onslaught. Palm isn’t so optimistic about the proceedings: according to a study it commissioned in the UK with lpsos MORI, 70% of people who send messages at midnight experience a delay in delivery, with places like London experience 77% delays, and 23% of Britons waiting over six hours for their text messages to arrive. Palm suggests an IM or email might be in order, and smartphone users will have better luck getting their messages delivered over the comparably unclogged data networks. Verizon seems more excited about the prospect, expecting the 284 million text messages sent last year on its network between 12pm New Years Eve and 4am New Years Day to rise to 300 million. Telstra expects to process more than 53 million messages across Australia, and will have a “small army” of techs on hand to monitor network performance. Canadians are expected to send 50 million texts this year, according to Virgin Mobile Canada, with the average canadian sending two text messages each — double that of last year. However and wherever you party, stay safe out there — friends don’t let friends drink and text their estranged exes.

Boy killed by texting driver

December 28th, 2007 by

According to a report from the Boston Globe, a man claims that he was typing a text message into his cellphone when he lost control of his SUV and fatally struck a 13-year-old boy on a bicycle. In a stark and sad reminder of the cause for recent laws put into effect governing texting / phoning while driving, it appears the man was so distracted that he didn’t even realize what had happened until later that night. Ironically, the friend of the boy who had been walking with him attempted to call 911 on his phone, but was unable to get through. The driver is being charged with motor vehicle homicide, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, and driving without a license. A tragic story — and unfortunately not the first we’ve seen — but hopefully a cautionary tale for anyone who regularly juggles driving and texting. Don’t.

Texting, talking at the wheel could land Brits in jail

December 21st, 2007 by

We already knew that UK motorists caught driving while texting (or vice-versa) could face a penalty of two whole years in the slammer, but now it seems that merely talking while controlling a motor vehicle could land you in the exact same predicament. Reportedly, British drivers caught chatting on a handset or sending an SMS while on the road “could be jailed” under new guidelines that are expected to be published. In the most extreme cases, they could be tagged with “dangerous driving, which carries a two-year maximum sentence and an unlimited fine.” Currently, these folks simply get slapped with an “automatic fine and three points on their license under the lesser charge of careless driving.” But honestly, it’s not like prison would be so bad for cellphone addicts — after all, we hear some cells over there actually provide service.

SMS parties down on 15th birthday… again

December 7th, 2007 by

Filed under:

Ever wondered what it’d be like to have two birthdays in a single year? If so, just phone up, er, text SMS — it’s living the dream, baby! Apparently, the first “recorded text message” was sent from software engineer Neil Papworth to Richard Jarvis, a director at Vodafone, on December 3, 1992, which is arguably the birthday of SMS as we know it. Granted, the Short Message Service Center has been around just a hair longer, but without an official birth certificate tied to either, who are we to argue? So, here’s to you (yet again), dear text messaging, but if you really try to sneak a third shindig in before the year’s up, don’t look to us to provide another round of hors d’oeuvres.

SMS-based SatLav service guides Londoners to public toilets

November 29th, 2007 by

If you’ve ever found yourself stuck in London with the insatiable urge to urinate in an alleyway, help is on the way. Believe it or not, a new SMS-based toilet finding service actually has the aforementioned predicament as a top priority to solve, and the Westminster City Council is hoping that people utilize the system to keep streets a bit cleaner. Cleverly dubbed SatLav, the technology enables individuals passing through London’s West End to text the word “toilet” to 80097 in order to receive a (hopefully hasty) reply with details to get to the nearest public restroom. Unfortunately, the service will cost users £0.25 ($0.52) each time they use it, so we’re a bit skeptical that alleyway urinators will happily cough up some coin rather than just sticking to old ways.

Man vindicated after being fired for texting in sick

November 23rd, 2007 by

Filed under:

A UK tile store sales clerk has been awarded almost £7,000 (over $14,000) by an employment tribunal after he was fired for texting in sick. Apparently Edinburgh’s Tile It All takes the phrase “calling in sick” quite literally — requiring an actual phone call stating one’s intentions to miss work — but former employee Mark Morrison claims to have been unaware of this policy when he took over two weeks off due to his brother’s death and the resulting depression. Before he could return to his job, however, Morrison was summoned to a disciplinary hearing where he was given the ax for failing to abide by company policy. Instead of taking up arms a la the traditional disgruntled worker, Morrison wisely chose a more official forum to air his grievances, and succeeded in proving that he had not received proper discipline or warnings prior to getting pink slipped.

cre8txt keyboard translates SMS slang to English

November 12th, 2007 by

Filed under:

Granted, it seems that we’ll all be using SMS slang to condense our resumés in the not-too-distant future, but on the off chance that unadulterated English is still required in some facet of your life, the cre8txt keyboard will make things an awful lot easier. This gem plugs into one’s PC via USB and actually translates texting jargon into words that Merriam-Webster would approve of, and in case that wasn’t gimmicky enough, it also includes predictive text software to complete sentences before you can even think up your own endings. We still can’t see such a device being worth the £49.99 ($105) asking price, but we’re betting that our kids will view things differently. Oh, the humanity.
