While Dell seems to be madly and passionately in love with Linux, rival Lenovo is breaking things off… or at least refusing to take things any further via IM. Reportedly, the computer maker has decided it best to stop offering Linux-based machines via its online sales portal, though open-source fanatics can still snap up Linux-infused rigs through Lenovo’s own or partner direct sales teams. Ray Gorman, a spokesman for the company, noted that its “commitment to Linux has not changed,” and he continued on to say that “what has changed is that customers will no longer be able to order Lenovo ThinkPads and ThinkCentres with pre-installed Linux via the lenovo.com website.” Truthfully, there’s no bitterness with Linux here — online sales figures simply didn’t justify keeping ‘em on there. And you know, money talks.

Last September, Lenovo tooted its horn quite loudly with the introduction of the environmentally-friendly ThinkCentre A61e. Fast forward a few months, and it’s the same song and dance once more — with even more green this time, though. The ThinkCentre M57 / M57p machines won’t blow anyone away in terms of raw horsepower, but they are the first desktops from any PC maker to garner GREENGUARD certification. Additionally, these power-sipping rigs are EPEAT Gold rated, Energy Star 4.0 rated, and the first ThinkCentres with recycled material from consumer plastics. Internally, you’ll get to choose from a range of Intel Celeron / Core 2 Duo CPU options, up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM, integrated graphics, an 80GB / 160GB hard drive and not much else. ‘Course, with prices on the M57 starting at $699 and an understandable focus on energy-efficient components, we wouldn’t expect much different.

We’re not sure why Lenovo is feeling so particularly jolly this holiday season, but we’re certainly not complaining. The company just slashed prices on its ThinkPad R, T and X series laptops, and its ThinkCentre A desktops. All models have received a 25% price cut, except for the R series with a still-lovable 22%. Yeah, you know the person on your list with everything? We bet they don’t have seven ThinkPads courtesy of their new favorite nephew.
