For TiVo fans, there’s no denying that the Nero LiquidTV | TiVo PC holds a lot of promise. Granted, it is arriving mighty late to a party that’s been rockin’ for some time now, but TiVo mixed with PC just sounds so, so good. Engadget HD was able to grab hold of a unit and unbox the thing for all to see, and as you wait for a review in the near future, let us encourage you to enjoy the gallery right over yonder.

We know, you’re still digesting the whole Nero LiquidTV / TiVo PC introduction, but once you get through your head that said product brings TiVo functionality to your PC, we’d like you to have a look at something only mildly related. In the best form possible (that’d be video, for those curious), a walkthrough of a potential new user interface for TiVo as a whole has been hosted up. According to the lucky soul who was able to grab this information from a recent survey, there’s no telling if it’ll ever actually be released. ‘Course, we highly doubt TiVo pays its engineers to cook up new software for nothing, but we’ve heard of zanier scenarios. Check out three UI vids after the break, and be sure to look carefully for the oh-so-subtle differences.

Rejoice, HTPC fans — that partnership between Nero and TiVo has finally borne fruit in the form of Nero’s new LiquidTV / TiVo PC DVR package, which brings the TiVo interface and featureset to Windows. The $199 package comes with a year of TiVo service, a Hauppage USB ATSC tuner, an IR receiver, and a Nero-branded TiVo remote, and does exactly as you’d expect — it’s TiVo on your PC. There are some interesting PC-specific features bolted on the usual kit — you can navigate using the keyboard and mouse (there are even some nifty contextual menus) and you can export directly to iPod and PSP-compatible .mp4 from within the interface — but for the most part it’s the same TiVo experience you’re used to, including streaming shows to and from other TiVos and TiVo PCs. If you’re already running an HTPC setup, you can get the TiVo PC software and a year of service for $99, but your Media Center remote might be a little wonky without a remap, and Nero reps didn’t make any promises about CableCARD compatibility apart from “it should work if Windows recognizes it.” Obviously we’d like to see that firmed up a bit — and maybe get some tru2way support in the deal — but it’s definitely a start. TiVo and RIM are getting all friendly on us, teaming up to build software for the BlackBerry that could strike fear in the hearts of Slingbox and Orb. Right now it’s pretty innocuous, utilizing the phone to check listings and schedule recordings, but in the future the two are looking to “further simplify mobile access to video content” — which means streaming video straight off the TiVo to a BlackBerry’s ever-expanding screen, if we had to guess. Everything’s pretty preliminary at the moment, the two are just announcing the partnership, and say to expect the first software from the duo later this year.

Well, what can we say? Here we have a TiVo HD with a subtle “XL” logo there on the bottom left, a more capacious hard drive and a Series 3 remote. That being the case, at least the one parked at CEDIA was outstandingly shiny — seriously, check it out over at Engadget HD.

It’s official, Amazon has moved Unbox-replacement Amazon Video on Demand out of beta for Mac and PC users, while confirming rumors the still-in-beta BRAVIA Internet Video Link service is open to all Sony HDTV owners. The streaming option (you can still download and watch via Unbox on PC or TiVo, and no matter how they’re purchased, content is added to the Your Video Library accessible from the web or IVL) gives Amazon that critical buy-now / watch-immediately element some other online stores lack, for its library of 40,000 licensed movies and shows. Prices start at $1.99 for single episodes shows, and at least $2.99 for movies, with savings available on season passes, now all we need to keep an eye on is the bandwidth meter.

Aw, snap. Not even 24 hours after we learned that a new DirecTV HD TiVo was on the way, in flies word from Denver that a new standalone TiVo is hitting even sooner — like, today. The TiVo HD XL will become the flagship unit in TiVo’s line by offering up 150 hours of high-def recording space, THX certification, a Series3 premium backlit remote and a bundled HDMI cable. As with the TiVo HD, this one boasts dual tuners for recording two HD programs simultaneously and a pretty similar design, but unlike the TiVo HD, this one will set you back a full $599.99. Those unaffected by the price tag can order one today from TiVo’s website, and we’re told to expect the box at various other retailers “as early as next week.” Full press release after the break.

Break out the tissues — the rumors were true. Or, at least it sure looks that way. As of right now, the only two TiVo units available on the outfit’s webstore are the TiVo HD and the Series2, and even if you do a bit of digging and find the still-active Series3 page, you’ll notice a glaring Out of Stock notification. Of course, you can still find leftover inventory hanging around at various resellers, but all signs are pointing to this being the final hurrah for the S3. Any touching moments you’d like to share in comments as we all bid the device a fond farewell?

Back in May, TiVo’s VP of product marketing got all of our hopes up that the next announcement involving it and Amazon would include HD Unbox content. As you can very clearly see, this is most certainly not the case. Instead, we have the immense pleasure of informing internet-connected Series2, Series3 and TiVo HD owners that they can now buy wares from Amazon without leaving their couch. If browsing through Amazon’s extraordinarily huge store with just a remote sounds appealing to you, you’re in luck (and mildly insane). Also of note, the new Product Purchase feature will enable advertisers to “market products sold through Amazon on any broadcast or cable network, any TV show, or via any of TiVo’s extensive interactive advertising features.” In other words, next time you see Dwight using that iconic shredder, you can buy that bad boy right then and there. Take that, Staples.

The timeshifting DVR patent that’s been at the core of TiVo’s closed-but-not-quite-closed lawsuit with DISH / EchoStar is being contested yet again by the very same company. Not content just appealing to the Supreme Court regarding the Federal Circuit’s ruling against a rehearing for the last case, DISH / EchoStar has started up a whole new lawsuit against TiVo, requesting a Delaware court find the new version of their DVR software does not infringe TiVo’s patents — presumably as an embittered and pre-emptive measure before TiVo could kick off its inevitable next suit. Don’t worry if you’re confused as all hell, so are we — the point is, despite the fact that decisions have been made and rulings handed down, these two companies are still managing to sue, re-sue, and counter-re-sue one another.

During his sit-down at D6, TiVo’s head honcho Tom Rogers was grilled with a flurry of questions. Aside from a lengthy back-and-forth over the DVR’s ability to skip through ads, we finally got to some real meat. First off, Mr. Rogers noted that he was “hopeful” that TiVo would be launched in the UK “soon.” Secondly — and probably most interestingly — was the notion that TiVo was working up a “whole home model” in order to solve the problem of needing multiple boxes to service an entire house. Sadly, that snippet is all Tom uttered, so we’re left to ponder what’s really going on behind the tightly sealed doors at TiVo. Here’s to hoping we know more by the time CEDIA rolls around — you listening, Mr. Rogers?

We had a pretty good feeling this would go down eventually, but we certainly didn’t see a confirmation (of sorts, anyway) coming this soon. Jim Denney, VP of product marketing at TiVo, has been quoted as saying that although the current version of Amazon Unbox can’t process high-definition content, TiVo and Amazon will jointly announce HD capabilities “in the not too distant future.” Granted, the content — whenever it does actually arrive — will only be accessible by “cable subscribers” with adequate bandwidth, but it’s not like that’s any sort of surprise. Sadly, details beyond what you’ve seen here were left out, but at least you can sleep soundly tonight knowing that high-def Unbox material is most certainly on the horizon.

DISH Network hasn’t taken “no” “denied” or “not yours” for an answer before in its battle against TiVo before, and it’s not going to start now. In a statement, the company expressed its plans to appeal the Federal Circuit’s ruling against a rehearing to the Supreme Court. No matter how it ends, customers don’t have to worry about jackbooted government agents (or software updates, whatever) stealing their precious DISH DVR functionality, because its “next generation” DVR software has already been downloaded to your box, and does not infringe on any patents. We’ll leave this up to the lawyers to fight out (and write amusing disclaimers about), but in the meantime hit the read link to hear DISH’s side of things.

Bad day for DISH Network, first its satellite is gone for good and now comes word its appeal to overturn TiVo’s lawsuit has been denied. That should put an end to the legal push and pull between the companies, with TiVo firmly on top, DISH customers could have their DVRs pulled out from under them. Win in hand, TiVo has a lot more leverage against other providers to put its service on their boxes, (which might not be the worst thing if you’ve used some cable DVRs) and leaves the company looking a lot more lively.

A recently unearthed patent filing shows Apple is thinking beyond its current living room video vending machine, the Apple TV. Among a number of new features, the design specifies how DVR information could be sent to a portable remote control similar to Apple’s existing iPod and iPhone, taking integration among its products to a new level.

And it’s not just working together for the sake of some superficial “better together” marketing angle. How many times have you heard friends discussing some great new show that you missed? With the capabilities Apple illustrates, one could perhaps call up the TV listings right from their iPhone and schedule to record the next episode. What’s unknown is how Apple would transfer recorded DVR shows to an iPod or iPhone — would recordings by synced through iTunes? And, if so, would they be tied to an authorized account to discourage internet redistribution?

In fact, while the addition of DVR features might raise questions about Apple retreating from selling TV shows, it would really reflect the reality of these show purchases being opportunistic (as well as perhaps serving as a tactic to bring NBC back to the bargaining table). Besides, DVR integration with the iTunes store could lead to more revenue opportunities. In the aforementioned scenario, the DVR could offer the opportunity to buy the episodes missed so far.

Well, what do you know? TiVo’s delivering as promised with this one, as Desktop Plus 2.6 is indeed going live in March — just like we were told back in January (and nary a week after TiVo promised YouTube access later this year). Truth be told, there’s not a whole lot here that you didn’t already get a taste of in our hands-on at CES, but here’s the skinny. As of today, TiVo users can grab hold of the latest version of Desktop (Windows only, we’re afraid) and “enjoy a broad range of web entertainment available directly from their TV.” More specifically, these customers “can choose web videos downloaded on the home PC using web browsers, RSS video clients such as iTunes podcasts, or other video download software to automatically copy to their TiVo DVR’s Now Playing List alongside recorded broadcast and cable TV shows.” In case you couldn’t tell, Desktop Plus 2.6 can be downloaded today for a one-time fee of $24.95, but consider that waived if you’re upgrading from an earlier version. Apparently TiVo sent around an email notifying its loyal overpaying customers that it’s shutting down the TiVo Rewards program on May 28th of this year. This won’t matter to the vast majority of TIVo customers, no no, this decision only screws the company’s staunchest word-of-mouth advocates. You know the kind, the alpha geeks obsessed enough with the company’s products to others spend their time zealously recommending it to friends and family in the hopes of spreading the premium DVR experience (and earning some points while they’re at it). Shutting down the program is one thing, but expecting the most loyal segment of TiVo’s cutomer-base to turn in their points before the next series of hardware comes out is beyond lame and decidedly un-TiVo.
