Takara Tomy’s wall-climbing AeroSpider RC car ships this month

October 1st, 2008 by

We came for the car, we stayed for the promoter. Takara Tomy’s previously announced AeroSpider RC car, which mystically scales walls and cruises upside-down, is finally shipping this month in Japan. Cool though that may be, the real news here is the overgrown 4-year old used to show off just how amazing this minuscule vehicle truly is. Head on past the break to see what we mean — trust us, we wouldn’t lead you on like this for nothing.

[Thanks, Clyde]

Bandai’s Luminodot: 1,600 glass pegs for your child to swallow

September 15th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Bandai’s Luminodot is a godsend for the light peg artiste looking to take his work to the next level. What we have here is essentially an updated Lite-Brite with over twice the resolution (read: pegs) of the original. Just like Hasbro’s classic toy, several design templates are included with the kit — and if you’re feeling creative, there is an online template generator that will render your own designs to PDF. Also included with the kit are 1,600 pegs in twelve colors (or about half of what you will need to fill up the Luminodot’s 70 x 50, 3,500 peg display — you can order additional pegs on their website). But the most impressive feature is probably the LED backlighting: in addition to lighting the pegs, the Luminodot has twenty-five preprogrammed animated sequences. As with most toys this cool, Luminodot is only available in Japan — though we have seen at least one for sale on eBay. Video after the break.

Nickelodeon and friends unveil more Npower gizmos

August 19th, 2008 by

We’ve never been big fans of giving your tween some Nickelodeon-ized gizmo when you can simply hand down your current gear and use it for an excuse to upgrade, but apparently not everyone sees it that way. Nickelodeon, Viacom and Imation have jointly announced the latest line of kid-friendly Npower gizmos, which includes a digital voice recorder, a digicam and a webcam based on the “breakout hit” iCarly. Additionally, the outfit is churning out SpongeBob SquarePants-themed speakers, boomboxes, MP3 players and digiframes, and there’s even a few Dora the Explorer toys thrown in for good measure. All the (inflated) prices and shipping details are down there in the read link — we won’t bore the uninterested any longer by fleshing it out here.

LEGO gets into classrooms with WeDo robotics systems

July 25th, 2008 by

Filed under:

There was a time when the world was more innocent and Lincoln Logs in elementary classrooms were a given, but now that teachers are looking to squash every ounce of fun between 8AM and 3PM (okay, so maybe we just had a rough experience or two), LEGO’s taking the back door in. The WeDo robotics kit is marketed toward elementary schools and the younger kids within them, with each package containing 158 blocks, gears, levers, etc., a USB hub for connecting to your Mac / PC, OLPC XO or Intel Classmate, a motor, one motion sensor, one tilt sensor and a CD with a smattering of sure-to-be-riveting activities. Mum’s the word on pricing for now, but considering your tax dollars will be paying for ‘em, it’s not like you’ll really benefit from knowing.

Back to the Future hoverboard up for auction: $30k to play

July 25th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Tired of waiting for scientists to crack the secrets of levitation in order to purchase a bona fide hoverboard? Look, life’s short — why not take matters into your own hands? A genuine wooden Mattel hoverboard used by Michael J. Fox (or Marty McFly, as we prefer to call him) in Back to the Future II and III is up for auction, though the barrier to entry is rather substantial. Of course, this is considered the “best example of all wood hoverboards to have survived the rigors of filming,” but whether or not it’s worth the $30,000+ asking price is entirely up to you.

So it’s a full $59 more than we were expecting, but with Wall-E’s tremendous success at the box office, we have a feeling Disney can get away with it. For those who missed this creature frolicking on video, here are the highlights: he can chat with his owner, dance, play music, dazzle you with those eyes and even sense / avoid obstacles. Unfortunately, all $249 will buy you is a place in line, as this fellow isn’t expect to ship until October 16th.

Jinsei Game of Life pedometer makes you exercise to play

July 21st, 2008 by

Filed under:

Directly rewarding efforts with results, now that’s the way to get someone moving. As we’ve seen time and time again, providing a clear, undiluted motivator is a perfect way to make fitness a top priority in life, and that’s exactly what Takara Tomy is hoping to achieve with its pocket-friendly Jinsei Game of Life pedometer. Essentially, this device is a portable version of the famed Game of Life board game, but users are purportedly not allowed to take a turn unless they take 300 steps first. Additionally, two players can take on one another via the “communication mode,” but there’s a good chance the most chiseled among you will take home the gold regardless of luck. Out this month in Japan for ¥3,675 ($34).

Bandai boldly introduces Smart Berry: the portable chat handheld for girls

July 18th, 2008 by

We’re guessing the naming scheme here was quite intentional, though we’ll be the first to say Bandai’s Smart Berry has very, very little in common with RIM’s stockpile of handsets. Nevertheless, this “mobile communicator” joins the small crowd of other tween-centric chat handhelds with wireless capabilities that enable four of these things to talk to one another “for email, chat and online games within a 10-meter diameter.” For whatever reason, messages are limited to 64 characters (and you thought SMS was bad…), and in case that little tidbit grows increasingly frustrating, there’s a virtual pet on board to take your mind to a more blissful place. Sure, we can see younger gals being entertained by this for a few weeks or so, but the ¥10,290 ($96) price tag just seems a bit outrageous, particularly when you consider the lack of a color screen. Yeah, for real.

Sweety stress reliever hears you out, won’t complain if you batter it

June 27th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’ll go ahead and squash your welling excitement: from what we can glean, Sweety is nothing more than a concept, but for enough cash, designer Haishu Zhang may be willing to make your dreams a reality. Nevertheless, this highly sophisticated stress reliever somehow hears you out and can determine the root cause of the tension in your life. He’ll also invite you to play interactive games to keep your mind on more peaceful endeavors, but if the world just tosses too much in your way, he isn’t opposed to being maltreated if it steers you clear of the roof.

Takara Tomy’s RPG Piggy Bank: level up by saving up

June 21st, 2008 by

Filed under:

Now here’s a novel concept. Takara Tomy’s BankQuest is half piggy bank, half old school RPG. Essentially, gamers / penny pinchers can purchase items to help them fend off pixelated ogres and the like by saving more money. The more coinage that gets deposited, the better the journey becomes. So, do you get some kind of prize when you cash it all out to buy your mum something nice, or what?

E Ball’s inflatable golf simulator saves you greens fees

May 29th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Never mind paying absurd quantities of cash to have some swing analyzer tell you how you’ll never be like Tiger — just pick yourself up one of these concoctions. E Ball’s inflatable golf simulator not only consumes your entire backyard, it takes you back to those glory days of frolicking at the fair with your BFF, and it even allows you to practice your game in less-than-flawless weather. The device enables amateurs to work on their driving and putting, all without having to fetch balls afterwards or deal with the embarrassment of completely hacking it up in front of your more seasoned pals. It looks as if you’ll have to ring up E Ball in order to get pricing details, but we don’t envision this one coming in cheap.

Disney / Thinkway Toys’ Ultimate WALL-E robot cleans up on camera

May 6th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Alright, so maybe the recently announced Ultimate WALL-E robot doesn’t actually get down and dirty on video, but he does maintain a pretty positive attitude after being poked, prodded and generally invaded for a full five minutes. The latest collaborative effort from Disney and Thinkway Toys was spotted recently at Maker Faire, and if you’re interested to see what exactly $190 will net you later this summer, head on past the break and click play.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CXVIII: iPhone on the farm

May 1st, 2008 by

Filed under:

Yeah, we too are hoping that these overseas impostors will have to start changing up their game if they still want to ape the iPhone in just a few months, but as it stands, the Toggolino Phone actually does a fantastic job of shaming itself. Apparently this handset, er, device comes packaged with some form of German kit meant to teach kinder a few things about words, animals and the equitable distribution of wealth throughout social classes. Okay, so maybe that last bit isn’t in there, but seriously, those animal apps look way more interesting than stocks, weather and company email.

[Thanks, Oliver]

Pictures galore from ROBO-ONE 13 competition in Japan

March 27th, 2008 by

Filed under:

The always jam-packed ROBO-ONE competition in Japan was more heated than ever this year, with bi-ped robots tackling others and ripping them limb from limb. Okay, so maybe that’s somewhat of a stretch, but you can rest assured some serious throw downs, um, went down. Interestingly enough, we heard that an i-SOBOT competition was also included (infighting, anyone?), and that the Maru family’s King Kizer took home the gold. That’s all well, fine and good, but we know what you’re after — take a (long) look at the hundreds of photos waiting in the read link below.

Lifelites’ eLite LED kits add pizzazz to those humdrum LEGO models

March 24th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Toy blocks infused with LEDs aren’t items that your youngster isn’t familiar with, but implanting hints of light into existing LEGO kits just adds an element of satisfaction not bundled with pre-fabricated alternatives. Enter the Lifelites eLite kits, which enables builders to wire LEDs within LEGO models fairly discretely, and given the option, you can spring for models that actually let you control the flashing action. Available now, the kits range from $30 to $50 sans a 9-volt battery box and cell, and you can tempt yourself further by checking out a finished product after the jump.

Sega Toys’ Body Trainer headset coaxes you into working out

February 29th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Oh sure, we’ve seen gadgets used as motivational tools before, but Sega Toys is apparently banking on you not being a hothead. Otherwise, you just might fling its Body Trainer headset from your dome as soon as you hear “please exercise a little bit harder” over your incessant panting. Nevertheless, those with oodles of self-control may actually benefit from having a personal trainer (of sorts) in their ear while working out, and by monitoring the wearer’s heartbeat via a sensor, it can blurt out messages at the appropriate time to help users through their session(s). Reportedly, this nifty exercise buddy is set to launch in Japan this April for ¥5,775 ($54), and while we’ve no idea if this thing is destined for US soil, we can definitely see it being used more so for its musical abilities and less for its steadfast encouragement.

IDL Motors’ linear propulsion system gets demonstrated

February 25th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’ll be honest with you — IDL Motors’ installation at Toy Fair 2008 was a bit short on details, but we’re certainly digging what we saw. Apparently, both the Bullet Train & Cars and Z-drive creations were on display, and while the former used linear propulsion to whiz magnet-laden “cars” around a track, the latter enabled similar vehicles to climb steeper slopes than their previous prototypes. Still, we know what you’re here for, so click on through to take a peek at the video.

Bandai’s Mirai Scope gets Ms. Cleo in your pocket

February 22nd, 2008 by

Filed under:

Not that we’d put any stock in a prognosticator — digital or otherwise — but for those looking for a bit of fun, Bandai’s Mirai Scope is apt to deliver. Reportedly, this digital fortune teller starts out by dousing you in pixie dust and asking a myriad questions about your personal life. After that, we’re told it somehow aligns with galactic bodies and helps you figure out your true purpose in life. Hopefully, it’s pretty clear that this thing is marginally more than a novel heap, but hey, what else did you expect for ¥2,980 ($28)?

Mattel’s D-Rex wants a piece of Pleo, your leg

February 21st, 2008 by

Filed under:

If you’re content with letting time pass you by, you may not realize that this year’s holiday shopping season is but ten months away, and apparently, Mattel thinks it’s got the whole hottest toy thing figured out already. Granted, we’d place our bets on that wildly animated Elmo Live fellow (and yeah, Kota is a legitimate dark horse), but the $150 D-Rex dinosaur is still pretty slick. Aimed at kids ages six and (way) up, the interactive dino reportedly features 100 different roars, “lifelike” skin (saywha?) and the ability to respond to a variety of commands or simply take a chunk out of your ankle if he prefers. Looks like Pleo’s got its work cut out, eh?

[Thanks, Braden R.]
