Next-gen Prius semi-officially leaks out: yep, looks like a shoe

October 19th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We thought we had a handle on what the next-gen Prius was going to look like when we spotted those renders back in July, and Toyota’s just confirmed that some press shots that leaked out last week are the real deal, not just photos of a super-high-tech sneaker. The company isn’t providing any more information until the official debut at January’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit, but we’re hoping we’ll get some more details about those plug-in fleet tests, as well as those solar plans. Check a few more shots at links below.

Toyota develops rear-collision airbag

October 2nd, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’ve got airbags in the front, airbags to the side, even airbags on the hip — and now Toyota’s installing the first rear-collision airbags into its Japan-only iQ minicar. The bags are designed to protect rear seat passengers, and inflate from above the rear window to blanket your noggin and reduce impact force to the head by half. The new system will be installed in iQ’s by the end of the year, no word on whether it’ll come to the States anytime soon.

Custom Toyota M2 carputer presents the ultimate distraction for drivers

September 14th, 2008 by

Filed under:

This insanely kitted out Toyota M2 is being put up for sale by its owner somewhere in Germany — he’s a highly motivated seller, provided you have the prerequisite electronics and programming (especially Visual Basic) skills. The standard gauges and indicators in the car have been removed, replaced with touch screens and a console mounted iDrive knob, offering the pilot of this machine control over almost every aspect of its operation: climate control, GPS, fuel consumption, mirrors, radar/laser, wireless transfer of music from a home computer, lights, fog lights… and the all-important VCD playback. Also listed on the original posting is something called the “police button” which “virtually controls the police.” This might have been something that Google mistranslated, but we prefer to think otherwise.

Plug-in Prius demoed tomorrow in London

September 9th, 2008 by

Filed under:

If you’ve been hoping to get your hands around the wheel of one of those eco-friendly plug-in Priuses (Priuii?), maybe it’s time to bite the bullet and finally move to the UK… just like you’ve been telling all your friends you’re going to do one of these days. According to a report, Toyota is gearing up for the first trials of the ultra-low-MPG car starting tomorrow at an event in London’s Hyde Park. An invite mailed to select members of the media (British media, we assume) states: “the purpose of our UK trial is to evaluate not only vehicle performance, but also the electrical infrastructure required, as well as driver behaviour and expectations. The results will play a key role in preparing for the future commercialisation of Plug-in Hybrid technology.” So if you’ve ever wanted to watch one of these planet-huggers race silently around a British landmark, here’s your chance.

Noise-cancelling Toyota Crown zeroes out sounds at head height

September 8th, 2008 by

Filed under:

As astutely pointed out by our friends at The Red Ferret Journal, it’s a bit odd to see hybrid car makers cutting down on noise while electric car makers are looking to add it back in, but Toyota’s silence isn’t of the kill-a-biker sort. Toyota has worked internal noise-canceling into its new Crown hybrid, with microphones to pick up engine and road noise, and then speakers to blast out antiphase versions of those noises at head height. Toyota claims it can cut noise by around 5 to 8dB.

First plug-in Priuses to hit fleets next year

August 31st, 2008 by

Filed under:

Toyota hasn’t made a huge secret of its plans to develop and sell a plug-in version of the Prius, and it the wheels are turning a little faster than we’ve heard — fleet testing of plug-in models has been pushed up to early 2009, with the goal of having “several hundred” on the road by the end of the year. Still no timetable for actual retail sales, so you’ll have to be a wheelman for a government or commercial fleet to get your hands on one — good thing all those modders have the rest of us covered.

Japanese firms to partially propel cargo ship via solar panels

August 28th, 2008 by

Filed under:

First things first — when we say “partially” propel, we mean partially. Nippon Yusen and energy distributor Nippon Oil are teaming up to spend around $1.37 million in order to equip a car-hauling cargo ship with 328 solar panels. Rather than just provide energy for the crew’s on board entertainment system, it will be the first solar installation to actually produce a smidgen of power for the boat’s engine. If successful, the panels would provide 0.2% of the ship’s energy consumption for propulsion, and they’re hoping to raise that to a whopping 1% by 2010. Gives a whole new meaning to “baby steps,” huh?

Toyota’s Winglet aims to usurp Segway, why we don’t know (updated with video)

August 1st, 2008 by

Filed under:

Prepare to step aside Segway, you had your chance to revolutionize personal transportation. Introducing the Toyota Winglet. Still under development, Winglet’s body has a 10.4 x 18-inch footprint and stands 1.5-, 2.2-, or 3.7-feet tall (depending upon the S, M, or L model chosen) and features an electric motor capable of a max 6km/h cruising speed for up to 10km a jaunt (only 5km for the S model). Like the Segway, the user controls the Winglet by shifting his weight to move the transporter forward and back or to make tight turns. Winglet will begin consumer testing at the Central Japan International Airport near Nagoya and Laguna Gamagori resort this Autumn with further testing in more crowded environments planned for 2009. It’s planned to hit a production stride in 2010. Hey Toyota, here’s a hint: you’d better start lobbying for sidewalk legalization ASAP if you’re hoping for global success. All three pictured after the break in order of S, M, and Large.

Update: Video added to show just how nimble the handle-less S and M versions can be.

2010 Prius revealed, sneakers still a major design influence

July 7th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’ve been hearing rumors about a partially solar-powered Prius, but Car and Driver’s got some info on the 2010 model scheduled to make an appearance at the Detroit Auto Show in January, and it doesn’t appear that sunlight plays a part quite yet. The popular hybrid gets a more angular shape, but it still basically looks like a shoe — which isn’t to say it’s not an improvement over that earlier rendering, which looked like a terrifically ugly shoe. Dimensions are only slightly bigger, as Toyota wants people to “recognize the Prius as a Prius” but the engine gets a small boost to 1.6 liters while fuel economy is said to be improved over the current model’s 48 / 45 EPA numbers. There’s also a plug-in version in the works, but the battery tech to make that happen is still under development, and supplies will be limited to the “hundreds of units rather than thousands.” All this is partially speculation on C/D’s part, so we’re still holding out hope for solar panels, but we’ve got a feeling that’s not going to happen for a while yet.

[Via TG Daily]

Update: Our bad, looks like this is apparently just Car and Driver’s illustration of what they think it COULD look like. Thanks, Dave.

Prius to go (partially) solar

July 6th, 2008 by

Filed under:

According to Nikkei, Toyota’s apparently going to be equipping future high-end Priuses with Kyocera-built roof-mounted solar panels. Somewhat counterintuitively, the sun’s rays won’t be used to power the car itself, but will instead run the AC. It also sounds like your next solar-assisted Prius won’t be around for a while, as the panels aren’t designed in yet, nor will they be until early next year when Toyota starts work on revamping the line.

Aygo speakers / earbuds aren’t nearly as cool as the car

June 23rd, 2008 by

Filed under:

What? Pigbuds a little too raunchy for you? If so, maybe the Aygo editions will suit your style. Quite honestly, we have absolutely no idea where these automotive-inspired speakers / earbuds can even be purchased, but those head over heels for their commuter car will surely do whatever it takes to find out.

[Thanks, Tom]

Toyota to introduce plug-in hybrid for 2010, hybrid versions of all cars by 2029

June 11th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Plug-in Prius

Toyota continues to lead the silent race to efficient cars with plans to introduce a plug-in hybrid in 2010 that will use lithium-ion batteries. Meanwhile, Toyota has been working with Matsushita Electric Industrial Co to develop batteries that will outperform lithium-ion batteries for its plans to introduce hybrid versions of every single car in its lineup between 2020 and 2029. If that seems too far away, the next generation Prius, due next year, will use NiMH batteries. Toyota president Katsuaki Watanabe told reporters in Tokyo that it’s time to move past oil and get serious about electric power. “Our view is that oil production will peak in the near future. We need to develop power train(s) for alternative energy sources.”

Video: Riken and BSI-Toyota robot goes on a neural bender

June 6th, 2008 by

You’re looking at a very Futurama looking man-robot from the latest mashup to hit the industry. This one has a brain. It’s the result of research from Riken and BSI-Toyota whose goal is to develop robots and automotive systems driven by neurotechnology akin to that of our carbon-based brains. The research is expected to result in more sophisticated auto-safety technology, mind-controlled machinery, and a new breed of baby-shoe wearing robots for domestic friendship and health care. Fortunately, this wobbly tyke has a long way to go before he begins bending the steel girders required to produce the forced-suicide booths of our doom. First steps after break.

Toyota rolls out Night View-equipped, pedestrian-finding Crown Hybrid

May 29th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Night view isn’t exactly a new technology, but Toyota’s latest implementation of it in its Crown Hybrid luxury sedan is a bit different than most. Unlike the company’s previous effort, which displayed images straight on the windshield, this one makes use of an LCD in the dashboard, which also does double duty by displaying the speedometer and all the vehicle’s other vitals. What’s more, the system also takes things to Terminator-like levels with a pedestrian recognition system, although that apparently only works at speeds below 60 kilometers per hour (the company says it’s also working on a means of recognizing bicycles and animals). No word on exactly what sort of premium all that will demand, but Toyota admits it’ll be “several times more expensive than the existing meters.”

Next-gen Toyota Prius: bigger, stronger, more Prius-like than ever before

April 29th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We already know that Toyota has an eye to the future with the Prius, likely switching up the batteries and adding a plug-in option, but now we’ve got a little more news on what shape the next generation fuel-saver will take. According to Auto Observer, the new model (said to be showing up at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show) will sport a larger, 1.8 liter engine, a ten percent increase in fuel efficiency, and will undergo a fairly noticible redesign (though we doubt it will end up looking like the concept car above). Pundits say the new Prius will be larger, may be available in a wagon version, and there are suspicions that Toyota will grow the brand and include a compact version of the hybrid as well. One thing’s for sure: with an increase in production of 60 percent for the next iteration, the eco-friendly car is sticking around.

Toyota already looking beyond lithium-ion batteries

March 7th, 2008 by

Filed under:

If you can believe it (and we think you can), Toyota is already hard at work on a new battery system to replace its lithium-ion units currently slated for use in upcoming models. According to a report in Automotive News Europe, the company is hoping to adopt a more advanced battery for its hybrid vehicles in about 12 years as part of its Global Vision 2020 plan. The automaker won’t say what technology it plans on moving towards, though it has suggested that air-zinc batteries could be a possible solution for maintaining its dominance in the hybrid vehicle market. In June the company will launch a new division dedicated to developing technologies for future cell power, while its lithium-ion vehicles will hit the roads around 2010.

New Toyota Yaris SR includes dockable TomTom GPS

February 21st, 2008 by

We’re currently smitten with that Diesel-powered Loremo, but if we had to pick our second favorite car for the day, it’d be this here Toyota Yaris SR. Not only is it cute and sporty, but the dash rocks a fully-integrated TomTom GPS unit. When docked it not only gives you directions but provides a touchscreen interface for your car stereo, plus Bluetooth integration for hands-free phone integration, and when you’re ready to rough it on foot you can pull the TomTom out of the car and carry it with you as a regular portable GPS unit. Now for the sadderness: Toyota is only offering this car in Europe right now, so us hapless Americans are going to have to stick with by our sextants for the time being.

Toyota announces plug-in hybrid for 2010

January 14th, 2008 by

Filed under:

According to reports, roost-ruling, green automaker Toyota has confirmed plans to launch a plug-in hybrid by 2010. Our man in Japan Katsuaki Watanabe (company president) dropped the bombshell at this year’s Detroit Auto Show while detailing the automaker’s plans for tackling environmental concerns. Apparently, the new lithium-ion-equipped vehicles will first be made available to Toyota’s commercial customers — such as government agencies. Watanabe gave no indication of when a general consumer rollout would occur. The vehicle, which is a modified version of the ultra-popular Prius, is capable of achieving fuel efficiency of 99.9 miles-per-gallon in EV mode, though it can only sustain pure battery power for about seven miles. The announcement will no doubt come as a total bummer to GM, which has plans to sell its own plug-in, the Volt, around the same time — though the Chevy vehicle is said to be able to make trips of up to 40 miles on a six-hour charge. It’s about time we saw some healthy competition in the green-auto-game — let’s just hope consumers reap the benefits.
