Baby steps. When it comes to Palm’s mainstream businessphone line, that seems to be the name of the game, and the new Treo 800w is certainly no exception to the rule. So is it new enough, advanced enough, and badass enough to do the duty while still being sufficiently incremental to satisfy even the most easily-agitated suit? Engadget Mobile reveals all in the full review, so click on!

We’re not sure if you check most mobile provider’s sites every ten minutes or so (like we do), but if you did, you would have noticed that the latest Palm Windows Mobile device — the Treo 800w — is available for purchase at Sprint’s online store. The phone, which features a 320 x 320 screen, EV-DO Rev. A, WiFi, and GPS, is currently listing for $249.99 after a $250 instant savings, $100 mail-in rebate, and two-year contract. So if you’ve been absolutely, positively dying to get your hands on this thing — now’s you chance.

Last we knew, a 436-page Treo 800w manual popped up from deep within the confines of Sprint. Fast forward a few days, and a few diehards are already trumpeting the receipt of their precious new Palm. Yep, that handset you see above is indeed the 800w, and if you care to ask some early adopters how things are going, feel free to hit the read link and surf on over to the forums.

Very rarely does a Palm handset go fully under the radar all the way through to the official announcement (if ever?), and now that we have a user’s manual, we can pretty much declare the impending Treo 800w fully, completely, and utterly scooped. This is definitely the real deal, too, coming straight off Sprint’s site — not to say anyone would go to the trouble of faking their own — and unveils no real surprises that we can see. The usual Windows Mobile 6.1 interface with Palm customizations, conservative styling (we’re being generous there), and typical array of Sprint add-ons like Sprint TV are going to make this a safe, easy choice for the well-starched suit in your life, and that’s about it. Not to say we have a problem with well-starched suits; Engadget corporate policy requires that we wear them at all times, actually. [Warning: PDF link]

We’re not sure where our tipster got these pictures (nor are we going to ask), but they appear to be screens from the Treo 800w’s specification and knowledge training documentation. New tidbits include a 333 Mhz processor, 4.4.1 x 2.28 x 0.73-inch dimensions, 320 x 320 pixel screen, and a weight of 4.94 ounces. Windows Mobile 6.1 looks to be in full-force, the camera shoots at 2 MP, and the USB port is 2.0. As for other revealed features, you’re looking at threaded SMS chat, but MMS is mysteriously missing in lieu of Sprint Picture Mail, a trend that continues to confuse us. If all this pans out, look for the 800w to be available on July 13th for $249.99. Hit the continue link to see the rest of the juicy shots and details.
[Thanks, brian]

According to some slides unearthed over at TreoCentral, it looks like the Verizon Treo 700wx could be an unlikely candidate due for the Windows Mobile 6.0 (not 6.1) treatment. Usually carriers like Verizon won’t bother upgrading devices as old as these with newer versions of their mobile OS — partly to induce future handset purchases — so we’ll have to remain a touch skeptical until such time as the upgrade really does launch.

It’s finally, really happened. The Boy Genius has gotten his hands on pictures of a brand-spanking-new Palm device — a heretofore unknown model called the Treo 850. As you can see in the above photo, this is a whole new look for the ailing smartphone maker, though it certainly bears a resemblance to the Centro and Treo 500. Apparently the Windows Mobile device will sport a 400MHz CPU and a 100MB of RAM, though other details are sketchy at the moment. Honestly, not a bad turn for Palm at all — now if you can just whip up that new OS and some new form factors and…

This little bundle of plain-vanilla familiarity is seemingly the first live picture of Palm’s upcoming Treo 800w for CDMA networks, known internally as the Zeppelin — you know, the obsolete airships that had a tendency to spontaneously combust. Specs on this one are starting to shore up, with Windows Mobile 6.1, EV-DO Rev. A, GPS, a 320 x 320 touchscreen (still novel by classic WinMo standards) and a typical Treo look and feel that doesn’t diverge terribly much from Palm’s tried, true, and well-worn formula. Sprint’s looking solid to pick it up come late July, but with those HTCs around the corner, just how much love at the register is this thing gonna get?

Word on the street (or via super-secret emails) is that Palm is about to begin beta testing on a fancy new device. Apparently, an email went out to select individuals calling for Sprint customers who will use Bluetooth devices and have access to WiFi. The email further requests that potential testers be “seasoned business professionals” who “commute and spend a ton of time working on email and on the phone.” From the sounds of things, the company is gearing up to road test its heavily rumored, WiFi-equipped Treo 800w, a Windows Mobile device likely sporting 6.1. If you don’t know what we’re talking about, it’s that mildly dated looking device from Gates’ CES keynote that we’ve also seen in leaks recently. Nice going on the new spec and inclusion of WiFi (at long last) — now how about some new form factors?

At this point the Treo 800w has been outed by Bill Gates himself, so while the suspense factor is pretty low, it’s nice to know that it’ll finally be getting here in June. That’s the word according to this purloined Sprint roadmap, which also indicates the newest Treo will have GPS and EV-DO rev. A — but still run WinMo 6.0, which is pretty sad, especially if that revised version of 6.1 launches at CTIA next week as expected. Oh well, at least it’s a new Treo — let’s just hope they can shake some more ugly off this thing before it hits the street.

C’mon — hop in this nifty time machine here and float with us back to December of 2006. That month, friends, is when Palm initially stated that it was cooking up a Vista-savvy iteration of its Desktop synchronization software, and yet, here we are some 13 months later wondering what took so long. Nevertheless, a finalized version of Desktop 6.2 for Vista has finally been loosed (half a year after the beta was revealed, mind you), and even though it does play nice with 32-bit editions of Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate, 64-bit Vista / XP users are still left out in the cold. For Palm (and Vista) users out there willing to forgive the tardiness, go on and hit up the read link to get the 65.2MB file headed over.

The Treo 680 and 750 are getting a little long in the tooth, are they not? The 680 has a spiritual successor in the Centro — the 750, though, not so much (come on, the 500v does not count). That might just be where this “Drucker” comes into play, a phone listed on Vodafone’s 2008 roadmap that alleges Windows Mobile 6.1, a 320 x 320 (!) display, 2 megapixel camera, GPS, WiFi, and triband 3.6Mbps HSDPA when it comes down the pike this July. In fact, we can pretty much guarantee it’ll be replacing the 750v, seeing how it says so right on the slide. Sadly we don’t have any visuals on this one (something tells us this ominous gray box isn’t the actual phone), but it looks like Voda’s targeting a price of £270 (about $534) and we’d be pretty shocked if we didn’t see an AT&T launch in roughly the same time frame.

Here’s a special present to those Palm diehards out there that’ve been sticking with their Verizon service for the past months, hoping against hope that Palm will notice them hanging out over on the largest CDMA network in the States: the Verizon Treo 755p costs $400 with a two year contract, a full $150 more than you’ll pay over on Sprint. The $400 price is after a $50 mail-in rebate, but if you play your cards right and spring for the right data plan you can get the final price down to $300. Obviously there’s nothing new on the hardware end of things — other than that ultra-fancy new paint job and Verizon logo — so at least you folks know what you’re getting yourselves into. Oh, and from the looks of things, this is that unnamed device Palm teased about earlier this month. Sorry to disappoint.

According to some dedicated — and, might we add, thorough — Palm fans, it looks like we’ve gotten a few more bits of data about the (rumored) forthcoming Treo 800w. If you believe the data, FCC documents detailing emails between Palm and the agency reveal the code names and corresponding FCC IDs of four phones… including one we’ve never heard of with “co-locating WiFi and radio.” Hear that? There’s no current (or announced) Palm phone with WiFi, so this device, referred to as the “Zeppelin” in the .pdf could likely be the upcoming new phone that folks have been speculating on lately. The document also makes reference to a “Centro 685,” which is another clue in this mystery, a variant of the Centro (690 is the official Palm “number” of the Sprint version) which might be headed out on AT&T. Only time, and Palm, will tell if this thing becomes a reality — c’mon dudes, give us something.

Speculation is growing that the device Palm recently blamed for its revenue shortfall is none other than the yawn-worthy Treo 755p, a phone that launched on Sprint eons ago and, despite being rumored in Verizon trim eons ago as well, has apparently had all sorts of trouble getting through Big Red’s testing process. While it’s hard to deny that it’s a pretty unspectacular handset at this point, we can also imagine that failing to launch it on the country’s largest CDMA network would account for a significant drop in cash flow — the Palm OS / Garnet faithful are still plentiful, after all, and there’s no Centro in sight for Verizon at the moment. So, tell us: is anyone out there really drooling for this thing right now?

If you loathe the carrier branding, or would just like to go gallivanting around the world with zero strings attached, Palm’s now selling its co-flagship Treo 750 with Windows Mobile 6 direct and unlocked for $549. The GSM world phone can of course do the 3G thing in the US and Europe, so it’s ideal the jet set type willing to deal with the Treo bulk, but other than the unlock it’s the same old Treo, so we’re sure you’ve already decided whether this one’s right for you. The phone is available at Palm’s online and retail stores.

How did Jack Bauer ever get by without his magical Treo? We figure it must’ve involved a whole lot more eyeball threatening than he usually manages to cram into a season of 24. Also, according to CollegeHumor’s “unaired 1994 pilot” episode, it involved a pager and some really bad early 90’s hair. Consider yourself warned, video is after the break.

Are we staring at the new Treo 800w? We obviously know what’s up with the Centro and the 500 (namely the 500v), so the only missing ID in that lineup is the 800, successor to the 700-series flagship throne. Well, if this thing is the 800w we do kind of hope Palm tosses that fish back. Rearranging the WinMo buttons and giving the phone a more industrial, geeky look does not a greater Treo make, so unless this thing is like half as thin as current-gen devices (which it won’t be, Palm seems pretty dogmatic about keeping its devices thick), it’ll just be more of the same.

No surprises in the mix here, but we’re delighted to see that Verizon is finally getting official with four smart devices that have been rumored to be in its pipeline for ages. Of the four, only the i760 from Samsung’s been priced and slated for release — October 19 online, November 2 in stores for $350 on contract after rebates — featuring Windows Mobile 6 Professional, QWERTY slide-out and offset numeric keypads, and a 1.3 megapixel camera. The XV6800 succeeds the tired XV6700, going up against Sprint’s Mogul by offering the HTC Titan reference design in a custom Verizon skin; it shows up with a 2 megapixel cam, WiFi, and a full QWERTY keyboard. Already released on several CDMA carriers, the HTC Libra sees the light of day on Verizon as the SMT5800 bearing Windows Mobile 6 Standard and a 2 megapixel cam (we loved the Libra’s GSM cousin, and we’re guessing this one’s great too). Finally, make some noise, Palm OS fans — it’s okay, don’t be shy! Verizon finally gets down with the Treo 755p, a phone that could ultimately serve as the platform’s swan song in the classic Treo form factor. As we mentioned, only the i760 has been priced and dated at this point, but we’ll keep ya in the loop just as soon as we know more.
