Not that you won’t be able to buy this thing from carriers here shortly, but there’s just nothing quite like being the first on your block to own a new handset. For those with cash to burn and an insatiable desire to play with RIM’s forthcoming Kickstart 8220, look no further than eBay. Up for auction right now is an unlocked version of the aforesaid mobile, but it looks as if the final bid will end up well over a grand. Good luck (being patient).

We’ve seen the Centro in its Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon (to name a few) iterations, but global roamers and free agents of all sorts will be delighted to know that Palm’s increasingly popular little smartphone is now available in a delicious unlocked GSM flavor. The device sports all the same specs as AT&T’s model, but clocks in with a $299 price tag and plain gray numberpad instead of the telco version’s shocking lime green variation. Alongside the carrier-free phone, Centros will also be nabbing a version of Google Maps with its “My Location” feature (long absent from GMaps on Palm phones). Current AT&T and Verizon customers as well as new unlocked owners will be able to download the app tomorrow, with a software update for Sprint later this Summer. Finally, you’ll all know where you are.

It’s just a little element in the ongoing fight against DRM, but every part helps, and we’re kind of digging the idea. Neuros has developed a name and logo for DRM-free media to allow companies to brand their products in such a way that consumers know they’re getting a fully portable file. “Unlocked Media” might not be super catchy as far as names go, but we like the idea of a positive move that consumers and companies can latch onto; promote the benefits of DRM-free, rather than just decry the evils of copy protection. The branding is available to “any entity that uses media using open standard technology which is available to all on a non-discriminatory basis.” Neuros hopes some independent third party will step in to manage the trademark. Oh, and if all this is too optimistic for you, there are some grating explanatory videos after the break that will have you running back to the open arms of “Big Media” in a heart beat.

If you loathe the carrier branding, or would just like to go gallivanting around the world with zero strings attached, Palm’s now selling its co-flagship Treo 750 with Windows Mobile 6 direct and unlocked for $549. The GSM world phone can of course do the 3G thing in the US and Europe, so it’s ideal the jet set type willing to deal with the Treo bulk, but other than the unlock it’s the same old Treo, so we’re sure you’ve already decided whether this one’s right for you. The phone is available at Palm’s online and retail stores.
