MSI Wind v1.09 BIOS update makes overclocking easy

October 24th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’ve long since known that MSI was a fan of overclocking. After all, just about every last one of its gaming notebooks come with one-button OC’ing courtesy of the Turbo Drive Engine technology. Now, it seems that the company is giving the spoils once reserved for the Crysis crowd to those with netbooks, or more specifically, the Wind. The freshly released (and absolutely official) v1.09 BIOS update enables simple overclocking by mashing Fn+F10, giving users the ability to push things 8%, 15% or 24% beyond their normally specified limits. Electric Feel over at ElectricVagabond has found that the update provides up to a 30% boost in performance, which he claims is quite noticeable in processor-intensive apps like Photoshop. You know you’re dying to give your Wind a little lift, so hit the via below for the step-by-step of getting this installed.

T-Mobile G1 software update to be pushed out tomorrow

October 22nd, 2008 by

Filed under:

Well, it looks like G1 owners (or some, at least) will be getting a bit of an unexpected surprise when they turn on their brand new device tomorrow, as T-Mobile is apparently already set to start pushing out the very first OTA software update for the phone. Nothing too major, it seems, but the update will include a fix for a bug that has prevented folks from listening to songs on Amazon, as well as a number of other unspecified “enhancements.” As with all OTA updates, however, it’s likely everyone won’t get their fix at once, and T-Mobile helpfully recommends that you simply just “wait,” or “wait a little longer” to make sure you get yours, or check your software version to see if you may have gotten the update without noticing (the new release is version RC28).

DirecTV DVR software update hits the stage again, now with slightly less fail

October 21st, 2008 by

That botched DirecTV software update a couple weeks ago that locked up DVRs everywhere, causing missed shows, global warming, spousal abuse and general melancholy amongst the populace? It’s back and locking up boxes across the land again, however this time, after rebooting their HR2x units and wondering how they’ll go on without a DVR’d episode of this afternoon’s Judge Judy, DirecTV subs will be greeted with a message proclaiming them the proud owners of a 1080p video on-demand capable set-top box, with improved “cellphone style” search via the remote and enhanced channel guide info including more actors. We probably can’t expect more than another apology letter from the satcaster, but tell us, does knowing what all this pain was for make it any easier?

Eye-Fi Manager update adds support for Twitter and RSS

October 9th, 2008 by

Late last month, Eye-Fi announced that its wares were finally supporting photo uploads to Apple’s MobileMe and the AdoramaPix service, and now, we’re seeing that its WiFi-enabled SD cards have a few more tricks up their sleeves. An Eye-Fi Manager update has opened up support for RSS feeds along with Twitter integration, enabling users to let their posse know when they’ve uploaded new photos for perusal. Additionally, the RSS support allows customers to “publish photos in a live real-time feed via RSS to the aggregator of their choice.” Hope you’re not a fan of post-processing.

DirecTV confirms HD DVR / receiver glitch, apologizes profusely

October 8th, 2008 by

So it’s true — hordes of DirecTV users weren’t just dreaming about a glitch that required a painstaking reboot to start the week off. DirecTV has sent out e-mails to loads of affected users which were unexpectedly forced to mash the red “Reset” button located within a door on the front panel of their HD DVR / receiver in order to get things going again. Of course, even the mighty satcaster can’t replace any missed recordings that were scheduled, but it is “sincerely” sorry for the inconvenience. You’ll still be paying your full bill, though, so it’s not that sorry.

Botched DirecTV software update requiring HR2X STBs to be restarted?

October 6th, 2008 by

Generally, we’d pass something like this off as just coincidence, but when over 95% of 1,000+ respondents confess to sharing the same issue, we simply can’t turn the other cheek. It’s assumed that DirecTV botched up a software update early this morning that affected a number of HR2X set-tops. Over at DBSTalk, the vast majority of readers who voluntarily took part in a poll affirmed that at least one of their HR2X units required a restart / reboot this morning. We know there’s no real point in asking if you too were affected, but that aside, what was DirecTV attempting to send down? The world may never know.

Samsung Instinct firmware changes confirmed: it’s the browser

October 6th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’ve been holding off on running this until we got confirmation from Samsung on just what was going on, and now we have it; it’s official, folks — the Instinct’s latest firmware update is all about the browser. To quote Sammy, “most of the traits of this upgrade focus on improving the Web browser experience,” and the word on the street seems to be in line with that with faster page loading and generally fewer crashes being reported across the board. As best we can tell, it doesn’t solve every last issue in the book, but it’s awesome to see that Sprint and Samsung seem to be staying on top of this stuff. Have an Instinct? Sound off on comments with your update experiences.

Sony issues firmware update for Alpha A700 DSLR

September 16th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Sony’s Alpha A700 has been pleasing (or displeasing, we suppose), users for just over a year now, but those that have stuck with it in spite of a few issues can now smile brightly. Sony has just unleashed a firmware update for the DSLR which reportedly adds in an option to select auto exposure bracketing (single and continuous) with 3 shots in 2 EV steps and gives the choice to nix the High ISO NR feature. Furthermore, it supposedly improves the image quality in a high ISO setting, the auto white balance and D-Range Optimizer performance and the reliability for communication between camera body and vertical grip. Any owners out there care to give a shout on how their rig is performing post-update?

iPhone 2.1 update: the aftermath

September 14th, 2008 by

Now that 2.1’s out, your iPhone 3G is finally perfect — right? Well, that all depends on your definition of “perfect,” but odds are you still have a niggle or two poking out from behind that heaping pile of bugs and security flaws that were smoothed over with Cupertino’s putty knife in last week’s update. Here’s a quick look at what we’re hearing so far:

  • Excluding those of you who don’t know where you are, our poll on claimed reception improvements in 2.1 suggests that the majority of iPhone 3G owners (by a slim margin) are seeing no improvement or — gasp! — a degradation in signal strength since 2.0.2.
  • Given that 2.1 patches up some bugs with third-party apps, it comes as no surprise that a few of ‘em are apparently breaking with the new firmware (a disappointment, yes, but not a surprise). It sucks that Apple whacked the ball into developers’ courts on this one, and we’re hoping for the sake of users and devs alike that it’s not going to take many sleepless nights of re-coding and debugging to get the affected apps back on the straight and narrow.
  • We’re now hearing some reports of email buffoonery ranging from an inability to add new accounts to 2.1-equipped phones, to failures of existing accounts that had previously worked, to total Exchange breakage. Are you folks seeing anything there? Any corporate types freaking out that they’ve lost access to their beloved ActiveSync setups?

We actually found another bug in 2.1 ourselves: we can’t find copy / paste anywhere. It’s anyone’s guess how that one slipped by the testers.

Canon posts up 1.0.9 firmware update for EOS Rebel XSi

September 3rd, 2008 by

Filed under:

By and large, Canon’s EOS Rebel XSi was widely adored. Still, even the fanboys in attendance can’t deny that firmware updates that solve any number of quirks are loved just the same. Canon has just posted up firmware v1.0.9 for the aforesaid DSLR, which purportedly fixes three primary issues. The 7.81MB download addresses a “phenomenon in which AEB (Auto Exposure Bracketing) shooting does not operate normally under specific conditions,” another in which “the Live View exposure simulation warning indication does not properly display during Live View shooting, and yet another in which “images cannot be played back after continuous shooting when a printer is connected to the camera or a video output terminal is used.” Tap that read link to get your download on, and be sure to let us know if this update actually works as advertised.

Is Apple shooting in the dark to fix iPhone 3G issues?

August 19th, 2008 by

Hopes were high that 2.0.2 would decisively crush the reception woes some iPhone 3G owners have experienced since taking delivery of their cracking beauties; dropped calls, latching onto EDGE reception when 3G (also known as “the good stuff”) is available, and general signal strength wonkiness have all plagued a select group of handsets since launch, making for a decidedly MobileMe-like user experience. Some upgraders are actually reporting just the opposite, though — for these lucky few, 2.0.2 seems to be making reception somehow worse than it already was, and what’s more, there are intermittent reports cropping up of broken third-party apps, too. With the 1.x line of builds having chugged along with relatively little drama for a year, here’s our question: what the hell is going on? Why does 2.0, after two post-launch builds, still feel like a beta? MobileMe took the lion’s share of the fall for Apple having spread itself too thin through the launch-heavy summer months, but did some of that fire-drill mentality trickle over to the breadwinner, too? Sound off in comments with your experiences putting 2.0.2 through its paces so far!

Sony nails down music peripheral compatbility with upcoming titles

August 18th, 2008 by

With all the incompatibility out there among Guitar Hero / Rock Band instruments, it’s a real treat to see something like this. The Director of Publisher Relations at SCEA has posted an update that promises compatibility between instruments and software for upcoming titles; for instance, Guitar Hero: World Tour’s guitars and drums will work with Rock Band 2 and Konami’s Rock Revolution software, and Rock Band 2’s guitar and drum set will work with Guitar Hero: World Tour and with Rock Revolution. Furthermore, the team is still “working hard to ensure compatibility between the Guitar Hero and Rock Band titles currently on the market,” though we are told that an announcement on that could surface “shortly.” Rock ‘n roll harmony, baby.

iPhone 3G reception woes unfixable? Maybe, maybe not

August 14th, 2008 by

Support forum threads on Apple’s site and a number of ramblings across these great interwebs are starting to complain at great length about the iPhone 3G’s headlining new feature — 3G reception, that is — and pretty much every aspect of it: signal strength, call dropping, connecting to EDGE when 3G is present, the list goes on. Some smartypants analyst from financial firm Nomura thinks he has it all figured out, saying that the issues are “typical of an immature chipset and radio protocol stack” and suggesting that a firmware update pushed out to existing handsets is unlikely to ease the pain. We’ve been hearing that Cupertino could actually be working on just such an update at this very second, though, so this cat better get ready for the possibility that he could be eating his own words down the road. For what it’s worth, intermittent issues have been reported the world over, so this doesn’t seem to be anything to do with AT&T’s (or anyone else’s) infrastructure — and needless to say, not everyone is having issues to start. And for anyone whose iPhone 3G we just jinxed by writing this post… well, our bad.

Samsung Instinct gets its first firmware update: too little, too late

July 30th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Quite a few Instinct owners were giving Samsung / Sprint one option: crank out a firmware update to show that they cared before the 30-day test period expired, or deal with all that messy RMA paperwork. Unfortunately for the aforesaid firms, the handset’s first update is coming ten days after that date (at least for the earliest of adopters), and initial reports suggest that glaring problems still exist. Some users are suggesting that Sprint TV is less pixelated than before and that overall snappiness is improved, but the patently awful browser still remains at 1.0 (and thus just as awful). Look, when the change that gets most people jazzed is the battery meter’s newfound ability to hit 100% (and not just 90% as in the past), something is seriously wrong. Anyone else find any nuggets of goodness in the new update?

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Update: A bigger, more life-changing update looks to be planned — hang tight, Instinct owners!

Dell explains NVIDIA GPU issues, throws out BIOS updates to help

July 26th, 2008 by

So yeah, quite a few NVIDIA GPUs have been acting up. Nothing new there. However, Dell’s attempting to help its laptop owners out by making a few notable BIOS updates readily available for download. Apparently the issue “is a weak die / packaging material set, which may fail with GPU temperature fluctuations.” In order to combat the problem, Dell’s BIOS flashes “modify the fan profile to help regulate GPU temperature fluctuations,” though the Round Rock powerhouse only promises that the updates will “help reduce the likelihood of GPU issues.” Hit the read link and give it a go — it can’t hurt… we hope.

iPhone roundup: Apple seeds 2.1 with new GPS features, possible copy/paste, also completely out of phones

July 25th, 2008 by

Your morning iPhone news fix: looks like Apple’s seeded a beta of firmware 2.1 (not to be confused with the supposed 2.0.1 that will fix the myriad bugs and issues with 2.0), which may have some new GPS features that would imply turn-by-turn directions. No argument from us if Apple really is including new Core Location hooks for tracking your direction and speed, which would both be needed for doing proper GPS navigation.

Another bit which may or may not make it into 2.1 is copy/paste. We’re still both hopeful and skeptical, but supposedly in the new version of the WebKit framework exists commands for “plugins,” “copy,” “paste,” “cut,” and some others. We can’t confirm if these really exist (and if they do, we don’t know how they’ve actually been there, or if they’re simply holdovers from the desktop WebKit frameworks), so don’t hold your breath. Also supposedly making its first appearance in the 2.1 beta code: Apple’s push notification service.

Oh, and by the way, if all this has whet your appetite for the device, sounds like today will be a bad day to try and snag one. Apple’s retail site shows absolutely zero iPhone availability in the US, so if you’re jonesing then check out eBay or the seedy looking dude on the corner with the overstuffed trenchcoat.

Update: Looks like the stores have been updated in the last hour, many have stock. Game on!
