EasyBloom USB stake sensor now shipping, plants celebrate

October 27th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Well, wouldn’t you know it? That PlantSense prototype we peeked around this time two years ago has seemingly found the fundage to start up production, and at long last the revamped product is available for you to purchase. Now christened EasyBloom, this USB stake sensor analyzes important data when stuck in soil for 24 hours, after which it uploads the data to your PC (via USB) for determining whether or not a flower / tree / etc. should be planted there. Additionally, it can “diagnose what is wrong with an ailing plant,” and it can even dole out a recommended list of which plants would be suitable for your environment. Sure, $59.99 may seem like a lot of green to toss out for something such as this, but it sure beats purchasing new flora every fortnight after you murder yet another round.

Crapgadget: not-even-suitable-for-gag-gifts edition

October 25th, 2008 by

We all know the holiday season is coming up, but even if you’re on the hunt for a gag gift for your fav-o-rite prankster, we can’t not recommend the following turds enough. Up first is the absolutely unbelievable Night Sweat Alarm watch, which actually wakes you up if it detects that you’re perspiring. Why? Legend has it that no one knows. Moving on, we’ve got the USB Volcano — a perfect mix of your first-grade science project and your college-era infatuation with all things USB. Things start to get really absurd when viewing the self-explanatory Glass of Milk Light and the Retro Handy Handset, but even those are potentially topped in stupidity by the Air Flow Mouse and cake-shaped USB drives. Have a look at each below before casting your vote, but keep that barf bag handy.

USB-authenticated deadbolt lock promises to only let geeks pass

October 24th, 2008 by

Sure you can go crazy and drop a few hundred bucks on a high-tech door lock, or you can follow the lead of the folks from Makers Local 256 and build this USB-authenticated deadbolt, which should set you back just $60 — or no doubt less if you can scavange up some spare parts. The setup is based on Arduino’s slightly lesser known cousin the Freeduino, and effectively turns any standard USB thumb drive into a key, which can be just as easily lost or misplaced as a regular key but not as easily duplicated. What’s more, it’s not the data on the drive that gets read by the lock, but rather the serial number on a chip, which leaves the rest of the drive free for you to use as you please. Head on past the break to check it out in action.

OWC introduces first external Blu-ray drive with quad interface

October 22nd, 2008 by

It’s debatable whether or not Apple is losing its touch with FireWire, but you can rest assured that OWC hasn’t. Said outfit has just announced the industry’s first Blu-ray external drive with a quad interface, meaning you can link it up to your PC or Mac via FireWire 400, FireWire 800, USB 2.0 or eSATA. The Mercury Pro SW-5583 arrives with the capability to toast BD-Rs at a rate of 4x and includes a pair of 25GB BD-R discs for $499.99; the closely related Mercury Pro SW-5583T throws in a full retail version of Roxio Toast 9 Titanium (OS X) and sells for $579.99. Now, if only we could convince Steve that Blu-ray and Macs could indeed get along together, we’d really be satisfied. Full release after the break.

Denon jumps in the vinyl-to-MP3 turntable game with high-end DP-200USB

October 21st, 2008 by

For turntablists, there have been a plethora of options when scouting a deck with integrated vinyl-to-MP3 capabilities. Until now, though, you’ve had to deal with second-rate brands (we kid) like Numark and ion — neither of which possess the prestige and haughty factor that comes with a Denon logo. The DP-200USB enables deep-pocketed DJs to rip vinyl straight to MP3, and you can even save the digital files to a USB drive thanks to the built-in USB socket. The unit will be available in Japan early next month for ¥31,500 ($310), though it’s hard to say if or when Denon will see fit to bring this Stateside.

Line 6 launches POD Studio USB interfaces, POD Farm plug-ins

October 17th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Nearly a month after Line 6 treated bedroom guitarists everywhere with the brilliant BackTrack, along comes a few new tools for the more serious musicians. Or, at least the ones that think they’re serious. The newly announced POD Studio family of USB recording interfaces feature the POD Farm plug-in and 44.1/48kHz, 16-/24-bit recording. The no-frills GX unit boasts a single 1/4-inch guitar input, while the UX1 adds a balanced XLR input with preamp and two 1/4-inch analog outputs; the top-end UX2 (pictured) offers two 1/4-inch inputs (one normal, one pad), two balanced XLR inputs with preamps and phantom power, S/PDIF digital output and a pair of assignable VU meters. Each box comes packed with Ableton recording software, though Line 6 doesn’t bother to share the costs for these.

Nanovision’s MIMO 7-inch displays are strangely cute, sort of useful

October 17th, 2008 by

Filed under:

They’re not much more useful or cost efficient than a second or third regular-sized display, but Korean company Nanovision’s soon-to-be-released 7-inch mini-LCDs — model-named MIMO — are novel, and probably a bit more convenient to hook up thanks to a USB interface. Two models will hit the streets of Korea in just a couple of days, and they both work in either landscape or portrait mode at 800 x 480. The UM-750 (₩183,000 or $152), has a webcam, touchscreen, and TV tuner, but its feature-challenged brother the UM-710 (₩98,000 or $81) doesn’t. Unfortunately, they’re only planned for Korea at the moment, so everyone else will have to consider a smaller but considerably less adorable alternative.

4.3-inch USB-powered monitor asks “will the real nettop please stand up?”

October 14th, 2008 by

So you’ve just purchased a new desktop that checks in at 1.6- x 2.4 - x 2.1-inches (actual size may vary), and you’re looking for the perfect LCD to accompany it. At long last, we finally have a solution for the aforementioned quandary. The Century LCD-4300U is a 4.3-inch LCD monitor that not only provides the convenience of a USB connection, but it also gets every ounce of energy it needs via that same USB cable. The mini monitor touts an 800 x 480 resolution, LED-backlighting and compatibility with Windows XP / Vista and OS X. Now, if only the darn thing didn’t cost ¥19,800 ($197), we might have ourselves a runaway winner.

La Fonera 2.0 emerges for developers, encourages USB-related shenanigans

October 11th, 2008 by

La Fonera fans, it’s finally time to celebrate. Iteration 2.0, which is fittingly dubbed the Liberator, is at long last ready for shipment… to developers, at least. The La Fonera 2.0 box will certainly look familiar to owners of the first, with just 1,000 of these being prepped for consumers in France, Germany and Spain. The intention here is for devs to start toying around and “programming their own applications for other Foneros out there.” More specifically, the creators are hoping that more USB functionality will be worked in so we’ll eventually have Fonera WiFi boxes that play nice with USB hard drives, printers, scanners, webcams and all manners of cooling devices. It’s available now (for a limited time, obviously) for €39.95 ($53) if you’re up to the challenge. Oh, and if you design an application sweet enough for the Fonera 2.0, you’ll be reimbursed the purchase price — not bad, eh?

Ao-LAB’s eSATA SSD flash drive conveniently includes USB port

October 10th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’re still baffled that traditional eSATA flash drives require power from the USB port in order to operate (at least until that Power Over eSATA initiative starts bearing fruit), but it seems that Ao-LAB has found a nice, practical workaround for the time being. The outfit’s eSATA / USB Combo Drive arrives in 8GB, 16GB and 32GB flavors and provides dual interfaces along with a convenient way to power it if you’re dead-set on using eSATA for transfers. And given that speeds over eSATA absolutely obliterate those over USB 2.0, you’re going to want to. Shame there’s no pricing / availability information, but we suspect you can get a few hundred of ‘em sans issue should you contact the company seeking a bulk contract.

Sony has a PS3 controller charger, let us show you it

October 10th, 2008 by

Even with today’s wireless video game controllers, you can’t stay untethered forever. After a few hours of gaming on the PlayStation 3, you’ll have to plug in that SIXAXIS or DualShock 3 USB cable to charge. Starting December 18th, Sony Japan will offer an AC adapter intended for PS3 controllers at a price of ¥2,800 (just under $30). Like third party solutions we’ve seen, it has two USB ports so you’ll be able to do two controllers or toss in a Bluetooth headset. Nothing yet on availability outside of Japan, but if we get word we’ll be all over it, ’cause we feel slightly guilty for leaving the PS3 on overnight to charge — what with the world’s dwindling energy supply and all.

Dell Mini 9 gets snug little GPS hack

October 7th, 2008 by

Word is that Dell’s Mini 9 is a modder’s paradise, rife with precious little alcoves in which to squeeze teeny-tiny new stuff. The confirmation: MyDellMini forum user Tom Beauchamp bought a USB GPS receiver (not much larger than a quarter) and snugly fit it inside his Mini’s case. He’s provided images and instructions so you, too, can illegally navigate with your notebook computer in the passenger’s seat of your car. We can’t recommend that sort of irresponsibility, but if you want to mod it just because you can, hit the read link for the instructions and images. Beware, of course, that a minimum amount of technical savvy is required to avoid breaking a perfectly good little laptop. Like that was ever going to stop you.

Nyko’s Media Hub+ now available for shameless PS3 owners

October 6th, 2008 by

Let’s be honest here — you skimped by snagging the 40GB PlayStation 3 back in the day, and now you’re in need of a few extra USB ports and a multicard reader. Thankfully, your fortunes have changed since the days of your original purchase, primarily due to your drunken decision to bet the farm on Seth Petruzelli over the weekend. Whatever the case, Nyko’s unsightly Media Hub+ — which adds a trio of USB sockets and a multicard reader to the 40GB PS3 — is finally available, and it’s just $19.99 for those with no shame in adding it to the face of their console. So, who’s tossing a brown grocery bag over their head and picking one of these up?

USB webmail notifier lights up your life when you’ve got mail

USB webmail notifier lights up your life when you've got mail

The reams and reams of spam found with every check of our inboxes here at Engadget HQ have quashed the surge of emotions we used to experience when that new-mail notifier started blinking. So, we went looking for something to help get our e-mail groove back, and we’ve found it: the USB webmail notifier. It’s a little box with the iconic envelope design on the front that lights up in green, blue, or red when you receive mail. The color indicates either the location of the received message, for those of you who rock Outlook for work and Gmail for personal, or the volume, for those who need some encouragement to clean out that inbox. It is somewhat less useful than other multi-purpose USB indicators we’ve seen, but its simplicity, and its $17 price tag, make it our choice to bring back that lovin’ feeling.

Magnetic 4-port USB hub: for brazen daredevils only

October 6th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We know, the minuscule magnets adorned on this 4-port USB hub aren’t technically strong enough to have any severe effect on your data, but seriously, why would you chance it? In what has to be one of the worst ideas in low-end technology to ever grace our eyes, the magnetic 4-port USB hub enables users to stick their hub on any nearby file cabinet, metal plate or refrigerator door, though we can’t figure out why that’s such an awesome benefit. If you can, however, feel feel to show off your carefree side by handing over $13.99.

Targus kicks out a slew of Mac-focused accessories

September 30th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Targus is making a big deal about how it’s launching its first-ever line of Mac accessories, but we’re not seeing much here that’s particularly platform-dependent — just a lot of gray and white plastic. The $70 Bluetooth Laser Mouse, $50 Wireless Mouse, and $80 Bluetooth Presenter all feature an interesting touch-sensitive scroll nub that switches to cursor control on the presenter and offers four-way scrolling on the mice. There’s also a $50 USB file-transfer cable that offers direct file transfers between PCs and Macs, a $30 four-port compact USB hub with wraparound cable, MacBook and MacBook Pro privacy screens that range from $50 to $80, and a $50 dual-fan cooling pad with a slight ergonomic tilt. All this should be available now — PC owners, you’ll just have to find something else to do with your useless, useless money.

Crapgadget: this BlackBerry Bold dock is just for effect

September 30th, 2008 by

Let’s be straight: nothing says “I’m a successful businessperson” quite like a dock for your smartphone. You know, smack in the middle of that solid oak desk of yours — the one in the corner office. What, you say your fancy new BlackBerry Bold doesn’t have connections for a proper dock? Well, hell, you’ve got hair plugs, spray-on tan, and a house in the Hamptons you can’t afford, so why not take the charade to the next level? USB Fever’s fabulously generic $20 cradle for the Bold will at least charge the thing, but if you want to get all crazy and sync up with your PC, you’ve got to suffer the indignance of a USB cable (coiled for your convenience) flopping off the side. Should look real professional next to the red Swingline and that stupid “Teamwork” perpetual motion rowing thing of yours, sport. You know what we’re talking about.

Crapgadget: gizmos to scar your USB port for life

September 27th, 2008 by

Some things just shouldn’t ever be plugged into your USB port. Not even that dusty, never-to-be-used socket in your 16-port USB hub. The gadgets you’ll see below are among the worst of the worst, with some being so awful, they almost deserve a purchase just to give you a laugh live and in-person. Seriously, just listen: an actual “thumb” drive, a USB key doused in cabbage, a mousepad that doubles as a Lars Ulrich-approved drum kit and a USB Hollywood Film Kit for those still in denial over that acting school rejection letter. There should really be laws against some of this rubbish, but since there isn’t, we’re putting it to you — drop your vote in below to let us know which of the following gizmos reeks the most.
