Motorola shows off femtocell-in-a-digiframe concept

September 24th, 2008 by

After personally trying out Sprint’s AIRAVE, we’re confident that femtocells have a place in this world. Thankfully, Motorola’s already trying to make them less of an eyesore by integrating a CDMA femtocell into something we wouldn’t mind showing off in the den: an inconspicuous digital photo frame. The “3-in-1″ concept also includes a VoIP soft phone that would theoretically enable calls to be made right from the frame. Of course, Moto’s not handing out any sort of release time frame, but let us be the first to say that this thing needs to hit store shelves on the double — just make sure it’s not carrier specific, and toss in a GSM version while you’re at it, okay Moto? Check out the demonstration vid after the break.

[Thanks, Dave]

AT&T launches HomeManager smart landline phone system

September 22nd, 2008 by

Filed under:

Juicing up landline phones with internet connectivity and large touchscreen displays isn’t exactly a new idea, but AT&T’s new three-piece HomeManager system might finally bring it into the mainstream. The Samsung-built HomeManager Frame is the highlight, with a seven-inch touchscreen that enables features like visual voice mail, address book synchronization with certain AT&T cell phones, Yellow Pages, and other internet-enabled content like weather and news, while the HomeManager Handset carries a similar interface over to a more traditional form factor with a smaller color screen, and the HomeManager Base serves as the heart of the system. It certainly looks nifty — the Frame’s interface seems nice and quick — but just as with OpenFrame, we’re not really sure who’s in that crossover zone between people who want this kind of gear and people who still have landlines. We’ll find out soon — HomeManager is available now for AT&T customers in Chicago, Atlanta, Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, San Francisco, San Diego and Los Angeles for $299, with more to follow. Check a quick video hands-on after the break.

Sony’s SOCOM PS3 Bluetooth headset priced, detailed for North America

September 4th, 2008 by

We know, we know — you already know most everything there is to know about Sony’s SOCOM PS3 Bluetooth headset, but up until now, the most important tidbit has remained a mystery. The device will be launching this fall as part of the SOCOM: Confrontation bundle for $59.99, or if you just loathe the whole SOCOM series, you can pick it up all by its lonesome for $49.99. Tough call, huh?

Vonage gets an infusion of cash, changes in the boardroom

July 25th, 2008 by

Filed under:

VOIP provider Vonage is doing a bit of reshuffling at the top, while putting the finishing touches on a $215 million infusion of cash from Silver Point Finance LLC. Dry enough? Perhaps, but we’re sure Jeffery Citron, CEO and current interim chief executive of the recently embattled company will be pleased to get the helping hand. Citron is currently preparing for a swap of duties as well, taking a step back from the day-to-day — which will probably provide a welcome respite from the flurry of legal hits the provider has taken. Enjoy your vacation, Jeff.

T-Mobile Germany says sipgate makes jailbreaking too attractive

July 17th, 2008 by

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/T_Mobile_Germany_sipgate_makes_jailbreaking_too_attractive’;
Alright, can someone help us out with a little primer on German law here? California-based sipgate offers up a VoIP client for the iPhone that — for the moment, anyway — requires a jailbroken handset to run. It goes about its business on WiFi airwaves, so from the carrier’s perspective, no harm, no foul, right? Not so much. T-Mobile Germany takes issue with the app, claiming that it’s enticing its iPhone users to jailbreak — a violation of its contract terms. Furthermore, the contract disallows VoIP of any kind, WiFI or otherwise, which pretty much makes sipgate public enemy number one in T-Mob’s eyes. They’ve gone ahead and sent out a nasty little cease ‘n desist, which sipgate says it plans to fight all the way through the court system if that’s how T-Mobile wants to roll; meanwhile, it’s still providing service and says that “for the time being [its] users are safe.” Fight the good fight, guys.

iCall enables seamless GSM to WiFi switching on iPhone

June 6th, 2008 by

Filed under:

VoIP has been ushered onto the iPhone in quite a few incarnations, but we’d wager than none of ‘em are as useful as iCall. Said application is currently in beta form, though a release isn’t quite ready for the public at large. Put simply, it enables iPhones to switch from GSM to WiFi (when WiFi is nearby, of course) on-the-fly in order to save cell minutes and bypass the hassle of manually changing over. Interested? We thought you’d be — hop on past the break to see a demonstrative video of the app in action, and keep a close eye on the read link for a sure-to-surface-soon download.

iPhone gets VoIP and chat options thanks to Fring

April 15th, 2008 by

Filed under:

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/iPhone_gets_VoIP_and_chat_options_thanks_to_Fring’; Sure, the iPhone is cool looking, works out a lot, and is really good at math… but it can’t do VoIP, can it? Well, yes it can — and you can, thanks to a company called Fring and a piece of ingenious software (for jailbreakers only). Using the native app, it’s now possible to place and receive calls via your WiFi connection, thus making AT&T CEOs cry like little babies. Besides doing Skype and the like, the app also lets you connect for chats via MSN Messenger, ICQ, GTalk, SIP, Twitter, AIM, and Yahoo!, which should make this an attractive package even if you don’t want to harness the raw power of IP telephony. You can get the application for free by loading up Installer with the company’s repo. Check the video after the break to see the magic happen.

Motorola’s TEAM smartphones aren’t cellphones — yet

March 20th, 2008 by

It’s not every day that we hear about a Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard device that lacks any cellular hardware whatsoever, so when we do, it’s sort of like winning the lottery except way less exciting and profitable. Enter the first volley of devices to support Motorola’s new Total Enterprise Access & Mobility initiative — TEAM, conveniently — which represent just the very front end of a whole infrastructure solution for business campuses looking to replace their desk phones with something just a little more mobile and modern. Eventually, TEAM will support true VoIP-cellular handoff, but in its initial form, it’ll be WiFi only, making these first handsets very unique indeed. We don’t have the complete picture on specs here, but they’ll support push-to-talk, text messaging, and as we mentioned, they’ll be loaded with the very latest and greatest that Windows Mobile have to offer when they launch later this year.

MEDIVista won’t ease your pain, but will kill boredom

February 21st, 2008 by

One things most people fail to realize about being sick is that sitting in a hospital bed all day can be really, really boring. Luckily, a company called Lincor Solutions has realized that people need something a little more engaging than plain-jane television these days, thus the MEDIVista was created. The basic premise is quite simple: a touchscreen, LCD display is mounted to the side of a hospital bed which the hospital staff can use to display x-rays or medical information, and the patient can use for entertainment. Users can watch IPTV, listen to the radio or audio books, make VoIP calls, surf the ‘net, check email, as well as play web and network based games. The system also logs activity and allows users to view billing information, though at this point it doesn’t look like it can play Doom, will blend, or is due to become our overlord.

WiMAX-enabled VoIP phone showcased at Mobile World Congress

February 14th, 2008 by

Ridiculous quantities of 3G handsets weren’t the only things showed off at this year’s Mobile World Congress — oh no, NetIndex, Kaga Electronics and Runcom shook up the norm a bit with their WiMAX-enabled portable VoIP phone. Reportedly, the trio joined forces to develop a VoIP handset that utilized a 802.16e module, and aside from “realizing all-IP voice communication,” it also sports a web browser and integrated WiFi for times when a plain ole hotspot will do. Sadly, we’ve no idea where this thing will go after it leaves Barcelona (nor what it looks like), but here’s to hoping it makes a commercial debut — and can decide on a single logo — in the not-too-distant future.

Sony “planning” to bring Skype to PSP

January 5th, 2008 by

We won’t call it “official” just yet, but it looks all but certain that Sony will indeed bring Skype to its famed PlayStation Portable. According to Reuters, Sony is “planning to add an internet phone function” (that’d be Skype) to its PSP in order to “stir up demand,” which wouldn’t be a half bad idea considering how the DS seems to be hogging the limelight of late. Purportedly, the software could become available “as early as this month,” and while Sony spokesman Satoshi Fukuoka declined to comment on the rumblings, he did note that the company was “studying ways to add value to the PSP.” Are you thinking what we’re thinking?

Skype coming to Sony’s PSP?

January 2nd, 2008 by

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/playstation/Skype_officially_comming_to_Sony_s_PSP’; Guess what babies? All your wildest dreams are about to come true (provided they don’t get too wild). That’s right, according to new PR for Sony’s upcoming CES showing, Skype is apparently coming to the PSP. Details are scarce at the moment (i.e., nonexistent), but the company makes clear mention of a Skype client for the handheld game system on its CES 2008 promo site, which is pretty official — though we’re gonna hold our breath a little till we see a press release. Obviously, we’ll be hearing a lot more about this when the big show kicks off this month, but until then at least we can all sleep a little better at night knowing the PSP is about to get yet another succulent function. Just hit the read link and click on the controller icon, all you need to know is listed in the sidebar.

Update: Thanks to some sleuthing by the crew over at UberGizmo, a perverse and exciting little easter egg has been found in the PSP promo video which accompanies this new info. For literally one frame, Sony all but confirms Skype on the handheld with a nearly-subliminal image that reads “Make calls with Skype.” Check the image after the break and see for yourself.

[Thanks, Jorge H]

Touchmods SIP VoIP client for iPod touch is out tonight

December 31st, 2007 by

Got an iPod touch? And some audio input hardware? Want to make some VoIP calls? If you answered yes to all of the above, you’ll want to check out the Touchmods site later tonight, when they’ll supposedly be releasing their full-on SIP client for the touch. Hopefully by now it’s a little more prettied up than the last time we saw the thing above. If those last videos are anything to go by, though, it looks like it will be.

iPod touch SIP-VoIP application videoed in action

December 31st, 2007 by

Sure, there’s less than 24 hours before everyone and their grandmother can hop online and grab ‘hold of the SIP-VoIP application, but if you won’t be bothered with it unless there’s proof that it works, you’re in the right place. The crafty folks over at touch mods have videoed “the first VoIP call” made with an iPod touch, the aforementioned software and their own microphone appendage. Granted, the dialogue is about as uninteresting as it gets, but trust us, that’s not what’s important here. Check out a couple of in-action videos after the jump.

[Thanks, Tyler]

VoIP said to be working on iPod touch

December 10th, 2007 by

Filed under:

We’ve already seen a microphone rigged for use with the iPod touch, and it now looks like that hack could soon be about to get a whole lot more useful, as the iPod Touch Mods blog is reporting that an enterprising individual known only as “eok” has manged to get VoIP working on the device. According to the blog, eok used the SIP-based SvSIP application originally developed for the Nintendo DS as the basis for the hack, although there’s unfortunately few other details at the moment, let alone the recompiled version of the app itself, or even a screenshot of it in action. Given the history of these things, however, we wouldn’t expect it to take too long for those tidbits to trickle out, assuming the hack lives up to its promise, that is.

Skype and Logitech introduce 30fps VGA High Quality Video

October 30th, 2007 by

Filed under:

Skype users, rejoice: eBay’s VoIP giant has just given video calling a major kick in the pants by teaming up with Logitech to create a platform capable of displaying your ugly mug in full VGA glory at 30fps without the inelegant hack. With the release of version 3.6 for Windows (sorry Mac users, but you have your Leopards to play with), Skype now supports High Quality Video when employing one of three Logitech webcams already on the market — the QuickCams Pro 9000, Pro for Notebooks, and Orbit AF — along with a dual core-powered machine. Of course, performance is highly dependent on your internet connection as well; the HQV spec calls for a minimum of 384kbps, and both parties will probably require more than that if they want to avoid throttled frame rates. Updated software (v. 11.5) already being rolled out will teach supported QuickCams their new trick, bringing with it the all the facial imperfections and embarrassing quirks that are likely to remind us why video calling has never really caught on in the first place.

3 Skypephone is free in the UK

October 29th, 2007 by

Right on schedule, you’re looking at the just announced co-branded Skype phone: the 3 Skypephone. Sure, mobile Skype clients are already in worldwide use. This, however, marks the first time a carrier has fully embraced Skype which traditionally has been seen as a threat to carrier tariff schemes. Under 3’s plan, Skype VoIP calls and IMs are free to any other Skype user just as long as you’re under contract or top up your pay as your go account with at least £10 (about $21) each month. The £49 (about $101) 3G phone with 2 megapixel camera and microSD slot will be available in the UK on Friday; Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Italy, Ireland, Macau and Sweden sometime later in the year. Wanna see it in a video? Sure you do, locked-and-loaded right after the break.

3Skypephone launching November 2nd?

October 26th, 2007 by

Filed under:

We aren’t etching this in stone just yet, but we’ve seen numerous reports claiming that the recent partnership between 3 and Skype will soon lead to an actual piece of hardware. Reportedly, the 3Skypephone will be available on October 29th “for a pre-launch,” and will be officially official on November 2nd. Specs wise, it should feature free calls to other Skype users / 3Skypephone owners, a two-megapixel camera, video capturing and an MP3 player. Interested consumers can supposedly choose from three different colors, and it should be available on the “£12 ($25) Mix and Match 100 tariff which offers 100 minutes or texts or any mix of the two.” Ah well, at least we’ve but a few days left to find out for sure, eh?

Yamaha’s PJP-25UR speakerphone does VoIP

October 23rd, 2007 by

Filed under:

Certainly not the first of its kind, Yahama’s PJP-25UR is arriving a little late to the VoIP speakerphone party. Nevertheless, this sleek (comparatively speaking, of course) looking alternative is sure to have top-level managers smiling, as it provides a pair of swing-out microphones to compliment the main mic in the middle, stereo speakers, an audio in / out jack and the ability to get all the juice it needs from a powered USB port (or optional AC adapter). The 1.25-pound unit is slated to ship out in December and put a ¥63,000 ($547) dent in the corporate budget, but that’s a small price to pay for all the surefire productivity that comes from yet another mundane meeting, right?
