If you’re not satisfied with the driving directions you get on Google Maps, a few smart guys at MIT have created an elaborate new toy called CarTel just for you. They’ve equipped a fleet of Boston-area cars with computers that automatically connect to any 802.11 access points detected in transit, then send home data recorded by their on board diagnostic systems, all in just a few hundred milliseconds. The result: a website that gives you directions based on information gathered in real-time so you can avoid high-traffic areas or say, if it’s raining, roads which have historically been congested in adverse weather conditions — no GPS required. The project also keeps a record of all access points detected, so think of it as wardriving for the good of humanity — and you (probably) wouldn’t even get arrested for participating!

It’s one thing to appear on a website before being officially outed. It’s another to have a web portal designed specifically for a handset. On the eve of its official debut in the Big Apple, T-Mobile has launched the definitive G1 website, complete with a G1 logo, the time and date of tomorrow’s press event, a few tabs sure to be chock full of juicy details just as soon as said event closes, and most importantly, a pre-order button (of sorts) in order to sign up for what we can only fathom to be a notification of availability. 10:30AM tomorrow morning — we’ll be there, you’ll be there.

Like having control of your connection to the internet? Don’t tell Dan Kaminsky that — the researcher has developed a method of DNS attack utilizing typical D-Link or Linksys routers that can allow hackers to gain command of your gear. The winner-takes-all maneuver, which is called a “DNS rebinding attack,” functions by putting JavaScript into play that fools your browser into altering your router’s configuration, thus letting the operator remotely administer the device. The concept isn’t water-tight, as it takes advantage of easily-guessable router admin passwords, though Kaminsky says the enabling bug exists as a “core issue” for browsers. The attack will be showcased at tomorrow’s RSA security conference, where it’s hoped the demonstration will raise awareness about router security vulnerability. In the meantime, we suggest you change that default password.
