Nintendo cranking on Wii production for the holidays, still making no promises

October 27th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Hard to believe, nay, mind-boggling, that two full years after Nintendo launched the Wii in America we’re still looking at shortages. In the midst of “economic turmoil,” no less. Back in April, Reggie Fils-Aime proclaimed that he was “passionately upset” about the difficulty consumers were having in finding Wii consoles, and now that yet another holiday season is upon us, it’s clear that he’s made some changes. In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, he admitted that Wii production was up from 1.6 million units per month (during this time last year) to 2.4 million units per month (now), though he wouldn’t go so far as to say you’d have an easy time finding one. In fact, he stated that “once you see [a Wii console] on the shelf, you ought to buy it.” Also of note, those still scouting a Wii Fit may be in luck, as the Big N could decide to ship more units to America rather than Europe now that the greenback is gaining strength versus the euro. Good luck hunting — we’d recommend you start looking, um, yesterday.

Guitar Hero World Tour now rocking store shelves everywhere

October 27th, 2008 by

This day has been a long time coming, but Activision’s next iteration of the Guitar Hero cash cow franchise is officially available. Truth be told, the game (and requisite instruments) was sitting on a-many of store shelves yesterday, but there’s nothing like a formal announcement to really push you to take a few hours from work and rock out this evening. There’s a variety of bundles out there ranging from the game alone ($49.99 to $59.99), the game and a guitar ($89.99 to $99.99) and the full-on band kit ($179.99 to $189.99), so make sure you choose wisely when heading out to drop some dough.

Homebrew community takes back the Wii

October 27th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Good news homebrewsters, the Homebrew Channel has been updated and is now compatible with Nintendo’s Homebrew killing (for new installs) October 23rd update. While the previous exploit was closed by Nintendo, Beta 9 of the HBC exploits a different flaw and works just fine with the latest system software. They’ve even tossed in SDHC support to make the brick risking maneuver a bit more enticing.

Wii update stops homebrew installs dead in their tracks

October 23rd, 2008 by

Filed under:

Oh Nintendo, did you really have to go and crush the dreams of so many homebrew faithful? Seems a Wii System Update released last night blocks new installations (existing installs are unaffected) of anything fakesigned like the Homebrew Channel. Perhaps the increased corporate vigilance comes in direct response to the very real threat posed by the Wii Backup Loader to run pirated Wii games. Regardless, this isn’t the first time that homebrew developers have had to work around Nintendo’s meddling. We’ll let you know what they come up with — until then, however, you might want to hold of on the IOS51 update if you’re thinking of going homebrew anytime soon.

[Thanks, Matthew P.]

Rage Wireless Guitars recalled, chemical burns deemed too emo

October 23rd, 2008 by

Performance Designed Products’ Rage Wireless Guitar isn’t the most well known Guitar Hero peripheral out there, but that’s apt to change in a hurry after this. Said instrument has just been recalled after the company received a single report of a burn after the user self-pwnt him / herself by installing the AA batteries incorrectly. Apparently the circuit board within the axe is “defective” in such a way that it causes cells to leak if they are inserted in an incorrect manner, and thus, it poses a risk of chemical burn to the rocker handling it. Interestingly, consumers who own one are instructed to return the thing to the original place of purchase rather than PDP itself, so we’d recommend wrapping your arm in gauze and printing out the read link to help your case if you’ve trashed the receipt.

Wii Fit set to outpace Grand Theft Auto IV — gamer geeks weep, gnash teeth

October 21st, 2008 by

Unafraid to incite elitist gamer geek unrest, respected video game industry analyst Michael Pachter has supported a prediction by GigaOM that Wii Fit will outsell Grand Theft Auto IV this year. Yeah, you read right: the latest entry into what is arguably the biggest hardcore video game franchise around is gonna get whooped by an exercise tool — we’re not shocked, we’re just laughing. GTA4 was dominating at first, but with time interest has waned while Wii Fit and its included Balance Board peripheral have stayed hot despite supply shortages. Nintendo’s hardware-focused strategy seems to be working; the Balance Board install base is approaching 12 million, or roughly 30% of all Wii owners. You can bet it’ll be put to good use in future games and other, less mainstream applications even after folks have given up on losing weight and resigned themselves once more to lifelong loneliness.

PopStar Guitar’s slip-on fret sheath exposed

PopStar Guitar's slip-on fret sheath exposed

Okay, so the prophylactic jokes are strong with this one, but bear with us as we attempt to stick to the straight and narrow about XS Games’ PopStar Guitar for Wii. It’s a game that, if this were an SAT exam, would be to Guitar Hero as Mini-KISS is to KISS: somewhat short of the real thing. The screen shots look rather simplistic and, of course, familiar, but what stands out is the sheath accessory that slips onto your Wiimote, giving you four (yes, just four) fret buttons to manipulate while you “strum” with the Nunchuck. After a few hours of this we think you’re more likely to be in a wrist brace than rock ‘n roll heaven. It’s an experience you can feel for yourself when the game hits stores at the end of the month.

Nintendo Points won’t make the leap between Wii and DSi

October 8th, 2008 by

Filed under:

While it’s not exactly a huge surprise given that Nintendo doesn’t have an overarching account system for the Wii and DS, plenty of folks will no doubt still be disappointed to learn that the company’s new Nintendo Points won’t be transferable between the two consoles. Instead, when you buy a points card (available in 1000, 3000 and 5000 points versions), you’ll have to pick a console and spend all the points in that one place. Not exactly an ideal option, to be sure, but it seems like it’s one that we’ll be stuck with — unless Nintendo has some plans to make some major changes to the way the Wii and DSi do business.

Reggie Fils-Aime denies Wii HD rumor

October 7th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Reggie Fils-AimeNintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime sat down with VentureBeat on the heels of last week’s DSi announcement, and while he didn’t drop any major bombshells, he did put the kibosh on those Wii HD rumors, saying that they were “pure rumor and speculation” and that Nintendo wouldn’t show off upcoming models to devs as the rumors claimed. Reggie also downplayed the talk that Nintendo is going head to head against Apple, saying that Ninty’s always “viewed ourselves as competing in a larger entertainment space.” That’s the end of that for now, we suppose — but Reggie didn’t close the door on either rumor entirely, and his closing comment that Nintendo’s good fortunes “makes us the most paranoid people in the world” certainly keeps possibilities open. Hit the read link for the full interview.

Nintendo unveils Wii Speak channel for four-way voice chats

October 3rd, 2008 by

Remember that Wii Speak microphone that Nintendo announced at E3 for Animal Crossing socialization, and then everyone promptly forgot about? Well, shuffled in with its other announcements yesterday, Nintendo announced the Wii Speak channel, that will allow for up to four people to voice chat directly without all that pesky fishing and digging and tea sipping and cute getting in the way. Unfortunately, literally nothing else is known about the feature — we’re curious if we can use that USB mic we got for karaoke, and we’re sure you have burning questions of your own, but Nintendo’s clearly going to debut this feature and the related hardware in its own sweet time.

Microsoft Surface made pressure-sensitive with Wii Balance Board

October 3rd, 2008 by

So you’ve got a spare Microsoft Surface and Wii Balance Board laying around, whaddya do? Well, you could try stacking them on top of each other and hope that big-ass table doesn’t crush your little plastic Nintendo toy, and with some code slapped on what you’d end up with is pressure-sensitive surface computing. This clever little concept was cooked up by Josh Santangelo from “Stimulant.” In his demo, featured after the break, he rocks Surface from side to side while colored spots roll back and forth, using a physics engine he developed for MS Silverlight. It’s a great start and we would love to see this resourceful hack put to good use — beyond that of a totally awesome yet ridiculously expensive tilt-a-maze game, minus the maze.

Nintendo announces Wii storage solution: SD cards

October 1st, 2008 by

Yeah, the solution seemed pretty obvious to us, and now it looks like Nintendo’s willing to admit it. Nintendo will be solving its little Wii Shop game storage overflow problem by opening up the SD card slot for storing and playing games from (with DRM galore, we’re sure). The update will hit in the Spring of next year, and don’t forget that 2GB maximum when stocking up on the little buggers. It’s not exactly as exciting as a new DS, but we’re really glad Nintendo’s going to do the right thing here, instead of building yet another peripheral to clutter our lives with.

Nintendo prepping “Wii HD” for 2011?

October 1st, 2008 by

Look, we’re talking three years from now, anything could happen by then. Singularity, jetpacks, you name it. So a teensy bit of HD graphics from Nintendo doesn’t seem like too much to ask, does it? The filthy-rich company is purportedly showing off just such a Wii-followup to developers and publishers in the industry, who are nicknaming it “Wii HD” for the time being. A true sequel to the Wii, the followup will apparently stick with the core competencies (motion controls), while beefing up visuals (yes, please!), digital distribution, local storage and including backwards compatibility. The only hard evidence cited by What They Play, which originated the rumor, is that Nintendo’s R&D spending has grown dramatically since the launch of the Wii. We’re sure that cash is also being poured into the new DS and a number of other projects, but it’s really not much of a stretch to figure Nintendo’s working on a Wii successor two years into the Wii’s highly-successful life cycle. All we’ve got to say is that a few of these improvements really shouldn’t wait until 2011, and still others are long overdue.

[Thanks, JC]

Nintendo getting into the pedometer game? This will all end in tears

September 30th, 2008 by

Bad / good news, folks: Nintendo is / isn’t working on a pedometer peripheral that will / won’t integrate with its Wii / DS console. The company has famously stated that it doesn’t plan to release “a whole lot more” accessories for the Wii, which means we’ve got at least one or two to look forward to, and this could be one of ‘em. The images surfaced on a European trademark registry site with very little supplemental info, but we do know it’s a pedometer of sorts. If we’re lucky, this is something that’ll integrate into the existing Wii Fit setup, perhaps alongside a software update to manage more info about our unhealthiness than just how far we can jump on a pair of imaginary skis, but it’s probably just as likely that we’re looking at a Wii Fit sequel, or perhaps a DS version (a handy companion to that new DS?) designed to lure us out of the house. No telling, really, but the peripheral does appear to be wireless… and wholly evil.

SuperGrafx game queued up for release on Japanese Wii Virtual Console

September 29th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Retro game lovers, don’t ever say Nintendo isn’t looking out for you. Only months after hearing that the Wii’s Virtual Console would be getting Sega Master System and Commodore 64 games, in flies word that at least one heralded SuperGrafx title is on its way, too. Granted, the Ghouls ‘n Ghosts (or Daimakaimura, as it were) port is only slated for release in Japan at the moment, but we’re keeping our increasingly less limber fingers crossed that it’ll head to other parts of the world in short order. There’s also no telling if any other titles from the console’s library will be headed to the Wii, but given that we could count ‘em all on two hands, we’d say chances are decently high.

Thrustmaster thrusts Wii Glow Saber, Dual Trigger Gun accessories in our direction

September 27th, 2008 by

It’s admittedly difficult to take a company named Thrustmaster seriously (especially on casual Friday), but given that it has recently pumped out what are likely the two best Wiimote accessories of all time, we’ll give it a pass this go ’round. Speaking of, we’d like to point out that these two have been around the block a time or two, but that doesn’t make the red and blue dueling Glow Sabers (each packing 17 LEDs, mind you) and the Dual Trigger Gun (complete with Nunchuck holster!) any less gnarly. The Glow Saber 2-pack is available right about now for $34.99, while the Dual Trigger Gun (shown after the break) should land in short order for $17.99.

Nintendo thwarting Wii modders with epoxy-locked chips; Wii Backup Loader abandoned

September 19th, 2008 by

Filed under:

A double shot of bad news for the Wii hacking set today — not only do new Wiis appear to have a modchip-proof layer of epoxy around the DVD-ROM IC chips, Waninkoko has abandoned the Wii Backup-Loader project. The modchip news isn’t all that surprising — Ninty’s been fighting a losing battle against chip devs for a while now, and gluing things down with epoxy is a logical solution — but Waninkoko quitting is a bit of a shock, since we just caught wind of the Wii Backup-Loader a few days ago. Apparently he’s not happy that it was leaked this morning, so he’s dropping it, but surely an outpouring of affection in comments will change his mind.

TeknoCreations’ InCharge juices Wiimotes through silicon skins

September 19th, 2008 by

It’s a common issue, really. Having to peel that sticky, icky silicon skin from the Wiimote each time you try to swap out the batteries or plop it down in a recharging station is a real pain, but TeknoCreations has a better way. By utilizing a contactless induction charging system, its InCharge remote charger can actually reinvigorate Lithium Polymer battery packs that are encased within those newfangled silicon grips that the Big N recommends so heavily. The system reportedly offers a 25-hour battery life, and unlike contact-based chargers, the aforementioned dirt and grit won’t gum up the juicing process. The InCharge Wiimote charger should be available real soon for $34.99, and for PS3 owners feeling all left out, fret not — the company just received certification to go forward with a similar product for the SIXAXIS.

Nyko Wing hands-on: we still suck at Mega Man

September 18th, 2008 by

We just never got the hang of that little blue robotic man, with his arm-blaster and his wall jumping and his awesome friends, and the Nyko Wing helped none at all: we managed to kill they guy about five seconds after picking up the controller. Still, it’s a nice little chunk of plastic. It’s much more natural in the hand than that funky Classic Controller, and seems rather high-quality for a Nyko product, but the d-pad is too mushy for our taste, and the whole assembly seems a tad too light. Either way, we’re sticking with Mario.
