PopStar Guitar's slip-on fret sheath exposed

Okay, so the prophylactic jokes are strong with this one, but bear with us as we attempt to stick to the straight and narrow about XS Games’ PopStar Guitar for Wii. It’s a game that, if this were an SAT exam, would be to Guitar Hero as Mini-KISS is to KISS: somewhat short of the real thing. The screen shots look rather simplistic and, of course, familiar, but what stands out is the sheath accessory that slips onto your Wiimote, giving you four (yes, just four) fret buttons to manipulate while you “strum” with the Nunchuck. After a few hours of this we think you’re more likely to be in a wrist brace than rock ‘n roll heaven. It’s an experience you can feel for yourself when the game hits stores at the end of the month.

Robodance enables Wiimote control of your WowWee Rovio

October 14th, 2008 by

Ah, Robodance — how would we entertain ourselves without you? Just under a year ago, the software enabled robot lovers everywhere to control their i-SOBOT with an everyday Wiimote. Now, the same ability has been handed down for WowWee’s Rovio. You heard right, the latest, baddest robotic sentry on the block can now be dictated with your Nintendo Wii controller, and you can even customize your own own button assignments to suit your fancy. Hop on past the break for the demonstration vid.

Thrustmaster thrusts Wii Glow Saber, Dual Trigger Gun accessories in our direction

September 27th, 2008 by

It’s admittedly difficult to take a company named Thrustmaster seriously (especially on casual Friday), but given that it has recently pumped out what are likely the two best Wiimote accessories of all time, we’ll give it a pass this go ’round. Speaking of, we’d like to point out that these two have been around the block a time or two, but that doesn’t make the red and blue dueling Glow Sabers (each packing 17 LEDs, mind you) and the Dual Trigger Gun (complete with Nunchuck holster!) any less gnarly. The Glow Saber 2-pack is available right about now for $34.99, while the Dual Trigger Gun (shown after the break) should land in short order for $17.99.

TeknoCreations’ InCharge juices Wiimotes through silicon skins

September 19th, 2008 by

It’s a common issue, really. Having to peel that sticky, icky silicon skin from the Wiimote each time you try to swap out the batteries or plop it down in a recharging station is a real pain, but TeknoCreations has a better way. By utilizing a contactless induction charging system, its InCharge remote charger can actually reinvigorate Lithium Polymer battery packs that are encased within those newfangled silicon grips that the Big N recommends so heavily. The system reportedly offers a 25-hour battery life, and unlike contact-based chargers, the aforementioned dirt and grit won’t gum up the juicing process. The InCharge Wiimote charger should be available real soon for $34.99, and for PS3 owners feeling all left out, fret not — the company just received certification to go forward with a similar product for the SIXAXIS.

ITC to look into Hillcrest Labs’ Wiimote patent infringement claims

September 18th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Ruh roh. Those wildly flung patent infringement claims tossed out by Hillcrest Laboratories could have some merit, but even if not, it’ll be the ITC making the call. The US International Trade Commission has given itself the green light to investigate the allegations made by the aforesaid company, which state that Nintendo infringed on four of its patents in order to make obscenely large quantities of cash with the hot-selling Wii. There’s no telling how high (or low) this is in the agency’s priority list, but we’ll be keeping an ear to the ground for some sort of resolution, regardless.

RealMotion Pool Cue to help Wii pool sharks sink the stripes

September 10th, 2008 by

Two things: first off, craptastic pool cue Wiimote accessories are already widely available, and secondly, couldn’t you just duct tape a controller to your favorite real cue and achieve almost the same thing? Terrible ideas aside, RealMotion has just revealed that it will be shipping a RealMotion Pool Cue companion accessory for its upcoming title, American Pool Deluxe. Reportedly, the unit is a “meticulously crafted cue built specifically to take advantage of the Wii remote’s accelerometer technology for real precision and fun,” but we’ll have to envision it until the company gets smart enough to distribute a photo. Or is it really that embarrassing?

Stix 200 Wiimote wannabe reviewed: it’s just as awful as we imagined

August 30th, 2008 by

Be honest here, GoLive2’s Stix didn’t stand a chance at being taken seriously, and even when one reviewer attempted to have fun with the unashamed Wiimote knockoff, he failed epically. The Stix 200 looks strikingly like Nintendo’s accelerometer-packin’ controller, though this 2D-only rip was seen as “a set of slightly unresponsive, highly inconvenient arrow keys” rather than an exciting new controller. The PC games that can be played with the device are equally dreadful, and while the 3D-capable Stix 400 might be able to make up for some of the 200’s shortcomings, we can’t wholeheartedly say it’s even worth the effort to check out after reading this review.

[Thanks, Robert]

Samba De Amigo Wii Maracas get priced and dated

August 21st, 2008 by

Samba de Amigo is barreling towards the Wii, and we all understand that it’ll be a lot less exciting without the Wii Maracas. Thanks to Amazon’s quick trigger finger, we now know that Sega’s Wiimote accessories will go for $14.99 per pair, and if all goes to plan, they’ll be shipping out on September 23rd. Of course, we’d suggest you pocket that and just craft your own wildly colored (and slightly gourd-shaped) Wiimote covers, but we understand not everyone was blessed with those DIY genes.

Nintendo adds a little color to the Wii, just when we thought it didn’t care

August 21st, 2008 by

Remember a million years ago when Nintendo first introduced the “Revolution,” later to be known as the Wii? It wasn’t white, and it seemed multiple colors were a shoe-in for the shiny plastic console. Since then, Nintendo has sung a very white, supply-limited song with the Wii, and we’re ready for some change. This is not that change. But at least Nintendo is acknowledging that, indeed, other colors do exist, and look just smashing when waved around in the air, in the form of fancy new pastel-colored Wiimote straps for Japan. They cost a few bucks each, or you can get the whole pack for $10. No word if they’ll be heading Stateside.

Wii Sqweeze: yet another limited-use Wiimote peripheral

August 18th, 2008 by

Filed under:

A Wii Wheel for racing? Fine. A club attachment for golfing. Eh, okay. InterAction Laboratories’ Wii Sqweeze? Puh-lease. Recently “demonstrated” by CEO Greg Merril, this goofball peripheral possesses a pair of rubber handles which “allow for shoulder abduction and adduction.” Reportedly, the unit was shown off playing some sort of bow hunting game on a PC, though the company promises native Wii compatibility before its 2009 launch. Can we get a show of hands from people who’d actually buy this thing for more than $4.99? Don’t make us phone in the quick-lipped auctioneer.

Underlying MotionPlus tech isn’t a Nintendo exclusive

August 8th, 2008 by

How very interesting. InvenSense, which is licensing its motion-sensing MEMS technology to Nintendo for that new MotionPlus add-on, has now stated that its Nintendo partnership is “not an exclusive relationship.” InvenSense won’t let slip exactly who else is courting them for the tech, but we have to think the usual suspects (Microsoft, Sony) are at least giving the gyroscopic technology a passing glance. Of course, InvenSense might be looking to folks outside the gaming space as well, and there’s no guarantee Microsoft and Sony would even try for a Wiimote killer this generation, but if the Big Three don’t all have robust motion-sensing controls of some sort ready by the time the next generation rolls around, it certainly won’t be InvenSense’s fault.

MotionPlus co-developer shows off with LiveMove 2 video

August 1st, 2008 by

Nintendo may not have been totally forthcoming with third-party devs about its MotionPlus add-on, but no secrets (okay, maybe a few) were withheld from AiLive. As it turns out, said outfit actually collaborated with Nintendo in order to create the MotionPlus hardware, and it’s extra kindly offering up LiveMove 2 “to help game developers take full advantage of its capabilities.” According to the company, LiveMove 2 can slash up to half a year off of the time required to tie basic functionality of the device into a game, though we’re obviously in no position to confirm / deny. For the small minority that cares more about how MotionPlus works rather than just accepting the fact that it does, check out the read link for a few geektastic vids.

Penguin United offers its own quad Wiimote charging station

July 30th, 2008 by

Two 4x Wiimote charging stations in a week? Um, okay. If, for whatever reason, the Nintendo-licensed charger we saw just days ago wasn’t right for you (read: too expensive to import), we’ve got yet another option for you to consider. Penguin United — which gets brownie points on name alone — has just unveiled the Quad Charge Station for Wii, which utilizes Li-ion batteries that promise 13 full hours of playtime from each Wiimote. Additionally, it can juice up your controllers in just 4 hours, and there’s even LEDs to inform you of how close to full each one is. The real kicker? The colored Wiimote straps that PU tosses in — huzzah! Include one in your next party for $44.99.

Nintendo failed to notify third-party devs of MotionPlus prior to E3

July 23rd, 2008 by

Filed under:

We weren’t terribly impressed with Nintendo’s recently unveiled MotionPlus add-on, but we’re even more disappointed by this. Reportedly, scads of third-party developers revealed at E3 that the Big N’s latest Wiimote accessory was just as much a surprise to them as it was to any of us. In other words, Nintendo didn’t bother giving its external devs any advance notice in order to get the ball rolling on compatible titles, or so it seems. Unfortunately, this also means that we probably won’t see any MotionPlus-ready games hitting shelves from anyone not named Nintendo for months to come, but it’s not like Wii Sports Resort can’t hold our attention for a solid year, right?

Nintendo says it’s considering Wiimote with built-in MotionPlus

July 18th, 2008 by

Filed under:

It’s pretty far down on the surprise-o-meter, but it looks like Nintendo is at least considering the possibility of a Wiimote with built-in MotionPlus for further on down the road. That word comes straight from Nintendo’s Katsuya Eguchi, who told a developer round table that, “as to looking at whether or not it will be an attachment or built in - we’re always looking at how hardware should evolve and where we should take it,” and that, “it’s something we’ll be looking at.” Katsuya also insisted that MotionPlus wasn’t an acknowledgment that the original Wiimote was somehow lacking, saying that Nintendo is “very happy” with what it did, but that, “of course, you always want more.”

Keepin’ it real fake, part CXXIII: the Wiimote candy dispenser

July 5th, 2008 by

Filed under:

According to the reader who sent this our way, this candy dispenser looks “exactly” like a Wiimote, except it fires candy out of the spot where the IR transmitter should be. Apparently the instructions suggest that you “Do not aim at face,” so… it’s kind of like the real thing.

Sony’s Wiimote competitor to come as break-apart DualShock 3?

June 13th, 2008 by

So GamesIndustry’s got word that Sony’s supposedly-forthcoming Wiimote competitor is taking shape as something that sounds a lot like a break-apart DualShock 3, which would split down the middle and be used as two independent halves. Because that’s really what the PS3 needs, is another kind of controller. Seriously, do they really think any new device will be greeted warmly by the PlayStation fans they first disappointed with the SIXAXIS, and then bullied into paying $55 for a DualShock 3 (and only because they spent so much time fighting Immersion over the money they clearly owed in the first place)? There’s a chance we could find out at this year’s E3 if this controller really is in the works, but it’s a small one as they’re still trying to help people get over the DualShock 3 hump, after all.

Sony secretly working on a PS3 motion controlling remote?

June 2nd, 2008 by

Filed under:

Considering how little attention the PS3’s motion-sensing functionality currently receives, we’re not inclined to think that Sony’s making an even deeper push into the Wii’s territory, but a site called Playstation Lifestyle says that Sony conducted focus-group testing on a controller similar to the Wiimote earlier this year. Apparently the device was mounted on a foot-tall mini-tripod, and was demoed with tennis, fencing, and paintball mini-games, as well as used to play Quake on a laptop. That’s not to say that Sony’s ever going to bring this stuff to market, but it would certainly be interesting if it did — and coupled with those persistent Xbox 360 remote rumors, the gaming landscape could suddenly be overrun with people miming tennis.

Wiimote used to control robotic arm, effectively this time

May 21st, 2008 by

Sure, it’s been done before, but that doesn’t make the idea of a robotic arm controlled by a Wiimote any less exciting, especially when the arm is actually responsive. That feat is aided considerably by the fact that this latest setup was developed by an engineer from National Instruments, who made use of some of the company’s LabVIEW hardware and a specially-designed Bluetooth adapter to control the arm at the flick of a wrist (or using the Wiimote’s buttons). Check it out in action in the video after the break — don’t worry, no one gets hurt.
