PlayOn Media Server streams Netflix to PS3 / Xbox 360 today

October 1st, 2008 by

Filed under:

Forget the lames waiting for a New Xbox Experience to bring Netflix streaming to the console, the latest edition of Media Mall’s PlayOn Media Server beta includes Watch Instantly support right now. An update notification should be on the way to anyone already testing things out, the impatient can grab it from the website. Also streaming Hulu, CBS, YouTube, ESPN and others to the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, HP MediaSmart TV or other DLNA hardware (Nintendo Wii’s still on the coming-soon list) the presence of Netflix (and the recent Watch Instantly additions) gives even more reason to check it out. Since its still in beta don’t be surprised to find a few issues, but considering our smooth sailing so far, the list of reservations over its $30 price tag (after the 60 day free trial period is over) is rapidly shrinking.

Microsoft ships red wireless Xbox 360 controller for the holidays

September 30th, 2008 by

Here’s an interesting one. That red / black Xbox 360 controller that was showcased back in July is now available to any ole consumer in the US, Canada, Latin America New Zealand and Asia, and it comes bundled with a Play & Charge Kit and red rechargeable battery for $64.99. For whatever reason, Microsoft’s totally missing a golden opportunity to cash in on the holiday shopping season by reserving the green counterpart as some “promotional item.” C’mon guys, is it really that hard to understand how irresistible a red and green gamepad tandem would be in late December?

Xbox 360 with Jasper arrives on the scene in all its 65nm glory

September 29th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Hey, those Jaspers we’ve heard so much about are finally popping up in Xbox 360 consoles — a bit behind the anticipated August release date, but better late than never right? If you’ll recall these boards come equipped with 65nm chips that draw significantly less power, along with reduced heat output. If you’re thinking about picking one of the new models up, you might want to check that the manufacture date is no earlier than August 6, 2008, and lot number is 8031 or above. So if you just bought a new console, it’s time to go foraging for that receipt, but if you’re still not sold there’s always Valhalla to look forward to.

Video: game consoles stored in Gamestop bathroom

September 28th, 2008 by

Filed under:

On a serious note, we’re telling ourselves that there’s just no way this happens in even a meaningful amount of Gamestop locations, but more than anything, the video waiting just after the break is for chuckles and chuckles alone. Apparently, one quick-thinking videographer-to-be captured a few stacks of Xbox 360s and PS3s in the store bathroom. Yes, the store bathroom. So the Gamestop-sourced console you’re playing on right now could have all sorts of restroom-related germs on it. Yikes.

[Thanks, gamestopped]

Microsoft’s Xbox Live, Zune services to be down simultaneously this Monday

September 26th, 2008 by

Simmer down folks — everything is going to be a-okay. Yes, ’tis true — Microsoft has indeed scheduled for Xbox Live service maintenance and Zune service tweakage to take place at the exact same time this coming Monday, but it’s probably not worth losing your mind over. In fact, Major Nelson goes out of his way to affirm that “when [Xbox Live] service returns, you will not have any new features and you will not have the new Xbox experience update.” Point being, your Zune Social, Zune.net forums, all of the Zune Marketplace and Xbox Live services will be offline for up to 24 hours (48 hours for the Zune suite) starting at 12:01 PST on September 29th, but don’t expect a Zunephone to pop out of your now-forgotten HD DVD add-on when things come back on. Or you can, but we’d be prepared for unprecedented disappointment.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Slimmer Xbox 360 spied in the wild? (mystery solved)

September 25th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We received an interesting tip that we thought we’d share with the group. Windows expert and all-around bon vivant Paul Thurrott recently previewed Microsoft’s new Arc mouse on his personal blog, detailing the device with a handful of photos. In the final shot of the series, what appear to be two Xboxes side-by-side can be seen in the lower right-hand corner… but one of those consoles looks thinner than the other. The appearance of what might be a slimmer Xbox 360 has (needless to say) sparked a debate amongst our editors here. Some say it’s nothing — a matter of angle — while others argue that this could be just the scenario in which you’d see a leak of a new form factor. Either way, you can’t simply brush off the differences here, and a little Photoshop matching on our end proved that these edges are decidedly different in angle. So we put it to the Engadget reader: is this a sign of things to come, or just our imaginations running wild?

Update: And we have our answer! Paul Thurrott has gone to the trouble of detailing just exactly what’s going on here, and it is an angle issue. Needless to say, we’ve got a lot of deflated dreams and lightened pockets in the office today.

[Thanks, Brian]

Mad Catz’s brilliant Rock Band Portable Drum Kit for Xbox 360 now on sale

September 23rd, 2008 by

No two ways about it, Mad Catz has a winner on its hand with this one. The Rock Band Portable Drum Kit for Xbox 360 is a complete skins kit designed to be shoved into most any backpack and played on nearly any solid surface. The rubber pads are designed to handle over a million strikes, though that antique coffee table you lay these on may, in fact, not be designed to withstand such abuse. For those not exactly kosher with a full-fledged kit consuming the den, this seems to be the perfect compromise. And hey, it’s only $59.99 to boot. Ships “soon,” but not “soon enough.”

Secret Xbox document tells us absolutely nothing

September 19th, 2008 by

Filed under:

So, a top-secret document has popped up over at the Cheap Ass Gamer forums from a reliable source, detailing some Xbox 360 name changes. Unfortunately, we have no idea what those names mean for us, since they’re fairly idiotic, could just be internal code names, and could be fake altogether. We’re trying not to believe Microsoft is going to hit the market with the Xbox Lean, Xbox Granite and Xbox Pure, unless the “Lean” is actually slimmed down, and the “Pure” version is truly the purest of all Xboxes. HEXUS has a theory that these could be names for that 65nm unified-chip Valhalla Xboxen due for the end of the year, which may actually be feasible, but implications that the Pure could be a full-on sequel to the 360 seem preposterous at best.

Update: Turns out this is a fake.

In2Games shows off Gametrak Freedom: motion controller for Xbox 360 / PS3

September 16th, 2008 by

We’re tempted to say that peripheral makers are taking this whole motion controlling thing a touch too far, but we suppose there’s no stopping “progress,” huh? In2Games, the outfit that already sought to bring motion sensing to the PS2, has just unveiled the first image of its motion controller for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The Wii Nunchuck-esque Gametrak Freedom is explained as being a “remarkable ultrasonic 3D motion sensing technology which delivers performance, control and flexibility far in excess of that offered by existing technologies.” Supposedly, the device tracks the true 3D position and “precise movements of up to four players anywhere within a given environment,” though it remains to be seen how much support it’ll get from software developers. Initially, the controller will launch alongside undisclosed titles that can utilize the tech, but as for now, all you have to look forward to is Squeeballs. Yes, Squeeballs.

Microsoft officially slashes Xbox 360 prices in Europe

September 16th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We’re getting reports that the rumored Xbox 360 price cuts for the UK have gone official. After our exclusive peak (pictured above) at the Woolworth’s catalog, Microsoft has stepped up and slashed prices across the board for the Queen’s own population of punters, boffins, and geezers. Starting Friday, the pricing drops to £130 for the Arcade, £170 for the 60GB Premium console, and £230 for the 120GB Elite.

Update: The rest of Europe too: Arcade (€180), Premium (€240), and Elite (€300).

Woolworth’s to cut Xbox 360 console prices in the UK?

September 12th, 2008 by

Filed under:

We received the image above from a supposed Woolworth’s employee who scanned an upcoming retail catalog for our sicko pleasures. We can’t verify the claim, but we understand that Woolies is in the midst of an escalating, retail price war in the UK gaming space. As such, what we’re likely looking at are promotional cuts from the normal, £160, £200, £260 prices for the Arcade, Premium, and Xbox 360 Elite consoles, respectively. Then again, the across the board price cuts in the US seem to have really paid off so who knows.

[Thanks, Anonymous Tipster]

Microsoft votes ‘yes’ on Xbox 360 120GB hard drive price cut

September 11th, 2008 by

Filed under:

According to our main homeboys / homegirls at GameDaily, Microsoft has confirmed that it’s dropping the price of that big, delicious Xbox 360 hard drive from the dizzingly high $179 to a totally thrifty $149. According to a Redmond rep: “We reduced the price of the Xbox 360 120 GB Hard Drive to $149 in conjunction with the recent Xbox 360 console price drop. We believe this offers consumers even greater value when selecting accessories that meet their individual gaming and entertainment needs.” Hey, no need to explain — we like things to be cheaper.

Microsoft: Xbox 360 sales double since price cuts

September 11th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Good things happen when you suddenly become the lowest-priced console in the US. In the first weekend since cutting Xbox 360 prices, Microsoft is reporting a 100% increase in sales of all Xbox 360 models compared to the previous weekend. While not mentioned specifically, Microsoft claims that one model sold at 6x the previous weekend rate. Gee, could that be the $250 Wii-beating, $199.99 Xbox 360 Arcade at the front of Microsoft’s loss-leading lineup?

Dean Takahashi completes chronicles of Xbox 360 red ring of death

September 8th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Red Ring of Death

By now we have all heard of (or experienced) the infamous Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death, and we also pretty much know what causes it. Heck, we’ve even seen ways to avoid it by spending more money on fixes instead of going through Microsoft’s replace / refurbish / replace process. In what he calls his final chapter on an extensive bit of investigative journalism, Dean Takahashi uncovers the early quality control-absent rush to market that resulted in a massive number of Xbox 360s being sent to market despite known design flaws. Dean goes on to propose that all this has kept Microsoft from winning this round of the console wars, as costs to keep the consoles working crippled Microsoft from aggressive marketing measures such as price cuts. In the end, he concludes (via an anonymous quote) that Microsoft treated the Xbox 360’s launch like a software company would, as if some future patch would cover up the inherent problems with the console’s design.

Intel hoping to get Larrabee within next-gen Xbox?

September 6th, 2008 by

Filed under:

Quite honestly, there’s absolutely zero proof that Intel and Microsoft are yapping it up in regard to Larrabee, but considering just how logical it sounds, we couldn’t help but pass along the latest whispers surrounding the two. According to those fabled “industry insiders,” The Inquirer has it that Intel is currently on bended knee asking Microsoft to integrate Larrabee into the next-generation Xbox. If it were to land such a deal, developers would — in essence — be forced to develop for Larrabee given the need for console titles, which could then make things all the easier for Intel on the PC side. Like we said, this is all speculatory for now, but so long as the dots continue to connect, we’ll at least give this one a fighting chance at materializing.

Xbox 360 now cheapest console in the US — game on Santa

September 5th, 2008 by

Filed under:

It’s Friday the 5th, that means that the $200 Xbox 360 just became the lowest-priced console in the US (as it is in Japan) compared to the perpetually “sold out” $250 Wii and 80GB PS3 selling for double the price of diskless Arcade. With no new price cuts expected from either Sony or Nintendo, the holiday console wars are officially on. Picture proof of the $199 Xbox 360 Arcade in the wild after the break.

Xbox 360 price cut coming on September 5 — Arcade now $199

September 3rd, 2008 by

Filed under:

It wasn’t any secret that the Xbox 360 was getting a price cut in the next week or so, and now it’s official — Major Nelson just confirmed that as of September 5th, the Arcade will be $199, the Pro will be $299, and the Elite will be $399. No motion controller, goofy Live starter pack, or tweaked controller to be found, but we’re not arguing with price cuts.

Update: Here’s the Microsoft press release.

Nikkei: Xbox 360 price drops to $182 in Japan

August 31st, 2008 by

Filed under:

Japan’s Nikkei is reporting what we’ve been hearing Stateside for weeks: Xbox 360 price cuts across the board. Expected to go official sometime later today, the Japanese Xbox 360 Arcade will drop to just ¥19,800 or about $182 (tax inclusive, presumably) in hopes of boosting sales. The new pricing represents a near 30% drop from its previous ¥27,800 (about $256) price and undercuts the Wii sold locally for ¥25,000. Nikkei’s sources also claim that Microsoft will cut the prices on all three Xbox 360 models without going into specifics. If true then this bodes well for the US price cuts expected on September 7th.

Best Buy ad offers yet more evidence of Xbox 360 price cuts

August 26th, 2008 by

Filed under:

While it seems to be all but a sure thing that all three Xbox 360 SKUs will be getting a price cut on September 7th, if you need a bit more reassurance, you can now take comfort in this apparently authentic Best Buy ad provided by a helpful tipster, which should be making an appearance in paper form just in time for the big day. Just like Radio Shack’s, this one lists the Arcade, Pro and Elite for $199, $299, and $399, respectively, and, unsurprisingly, there’s no mention of a motion controller with any of ‘em.
